Service Drop and Panel
In this project, you should look into the details of how electrical power is supplied to the home. Include the details of the transformer, the service drop, the meter, main switch, and the service panel. A few questions you may wish to address are
- How many households are provided service by a single transformer?
- How are transformers used by WAPA constructed?
- What are the code requirements for the drop service? That is, what are the height requirements, wire and breaker requirements, etc? What is the difference between 120 and 240 service.
- What should be the capacity (ampere rating) of a service panel?
- Are there different types of service panels? What is the basic design of the service panel?
- What are the options for circuit breakers?
Of course, there are many other interesting subjects you may find during your search. You may wish to contact WAPA for information. There are three books on reserve in the library that may be helpful. They are:
- Modern Residential Wiring by Holtzman - TK 3285 .H65 1996
- House Wiring Simplified by Mix - TK 3285 .M57 1984 c.1
- NEC 1999 Handbook by Early, et. al. - TK 260 .N28 1999
