The Water Closet

You may not have given much thought to the water closet ... or toilet. But the invention of the indoor toilet (perhaps by Thomas Crapper?) should rank as one of the great all-time conveniences. The operation of the toilet provides a worthwhile study of physics and hydrodynamics. In this project you may wish to focus on the mechanics of the toilet itself or upon the related plumbing requirements such as venting.

• The Toiletology 101 site by Water Management, Inc. provides an extensive overview of standard toilet types, anatomy and function. In addition, information is available in Modern Plumbing by E. Keith Blankenbaker which is on reserve at the UVI library.

• You may also wish to investigate low-flush toilets such as the Sealand one pint low-flush toilet or the Alascan toilets.

Don't be embarrassed, this could be an interesting project.
