• Exam 3 answers are now available!

  Specifically, you should know

  • energy in the VI
  • energy basics for fossil fuels, solar energy, photovoltaics, and wind energy
  • structure, types, and compostion of coral reefs
  • coral animals, their structure, how they eat and reproduce
  • recent fate of corals and coral reefs in the Caribbean and their place in the ecosystem.
  • mangroves -- types in the VI, basic structures and how they survive
  • recent fate of mangroves in the Caribbean and their place in the ecosystem.
  • Read over all your notes from Dr. Turner's lectures -- primary and secondary succession, mutualism and commensualism, how specie numbers are related to size, location and habitat. Be sure to go over Dr. Turner's example of the experiment that dealt with species interactions.

  You do NOT need to know:
  • the latin species names. But you should know terms such as zooxanthellae, nematocysts, etc.
  • rock types or specific information from the Geology Field trip
  • In general, you don't need to memorize exact numbers, just have ballpark ideas of important numerical values such as recent coral reef and mangrove losses.

• Final Exam - Will be from 3-5 pm on Wednesday, Dec 1. We will be in both the usual lecture hall, SFC 222 and also next door in SFC 224. To study for the exam, go over the previous 3 exams and be sure you know the material associated with each question. DO NOT MEMORIZE the ansers to the questions, as you will not be asked those exact questions. For example, on exam 1 was the following question:

  Convert 2.0 meters into the following:

  a) ____________ cm (centimeters)
  b) ____________ km (kilometers)

  You should know how to do any such conversion, m/s to mi/hour, etc. On exam 2 was the question:

  In a surface low pressure system, air generally flows

  a) counterclockwise , inward and then upward.
  b) clockwise, inward and then downward.
  c) counterclockwise, outward and then upward.
  d) clockwise, outward and the upward.

  You should know about surface high pressure systems as well, and why the winds go cw or ccw in these systems. If there is a specific topic about which no question was asked on a previous exam, then you do not need to study that topic.

• 6.3 Earthquake in Dominica!! Go to the Dominica Public Seismic Network at http://dominicapsn.freeyellow.com/gallery.html and the USGS site at http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqinthenews/2004/usrcaz/ for photos and more information.

• Campus Wide Experience #12 - UVI Little Theatre presents Mouse Trap, Saturday - Tuesday, Nov 20, 21, 22, 23 at 8 pm. Write a short review or an anecdote describing a favorite moment in the play. Staple your ticket stub to the review and turn it into Dave Smith before one of the lectures next week.

• The due dates for DIR's #5 and 6 were inadvertently left of the schedule. DIR #5 is due at next week's lab (Nov 18-20) and DIR #6 is due in lecture, the last day of classes Nov 29. Don't forget Exam 3 will be on that day as well. The exam will cover the 6 lectures from Oct 27 to Nov 17. (The Final Exam is comprehensive and Dr. Gary Ray's two final lectures will be covered there.)
