Cathodic Protection

Cathodic protection is used to protect concrete structures that are subject to an exceptionally corrosive environment. From your study of ozidation/reduction in this module, you know that corrosion, rusting in particular, is essentially an electrical process similar to that which powers batteries. Cathodic Protection (CP) is a clever way of countering corrosion through electricity. A few questions to address are:

What is the basic principle behind CP?
What are the differences between the Galvanic and Impressed Current systems?
Where is CP generally used?
- What level of protection does it afford?
- When is CP economical?

Cathodic Protection is used in at least one structure here on St. Thomas. The Underwater Aquarium at Coral World. There may be information available through either the designers or contractors who rebuilt the facility after Hurricane Marilyn.
