The Physics 212 Puzzler

A bar magnet is released and consequently "freefalls" through a closed conducting loop. Assume that:

  1. Clockwise current, as viewed from above the loop, is taken to be positive current and counter clockwise current is taken to be negative.
  2. At time t = tm, the magnet is exactly half way through the loop.
  3. The motion of the bar magnet is unaffected by the induced current in the loop. That is, its motion is "freefall" motion and is accelerating.

Which of the plots below indicates most correctly the induced current in the loop? As always, briefly defend your choice.
