This week's puzzle will require some thought and a little arithmetic. There is about 1022 molecules in one human breath. Assume that one particular breath that you exhaled last year has finally spread throughout the earth's atmosphere. Take the earth's atmosphere to be uniform and about 10 km thick.
Question: About how far apart are these molecules today? Hint: First, estimate the volume of the earth's atmosphere. Now imagine each of the molecules at the center of their own cube. |
