The Physics 242 Puzzler

A glass prism can easily be seen in air. It is clearly visible despite the fact that it is completely transparent. Consider carefully why this so. (Under the right conditions, a clean glass window may not be so easily seen!)

But when the prism is place in a beaker of a certain type of clear vegetable oil, it is virtually invisible! Explain how this can happen? Specifically, what characteristic must the oil and prism share?

AND  for 5 additional bonus points, spend some time on the Lenses/Mirrors Tutorial. The tutorial has a calculator window, but your own calculator will much easier to use. (I'm working on something better.) Try all four levels and make note of any problems or JavaScript errors. Also note the type and version of browser you are using. Write down any sugestions you may have for making the tutorial easier to use or understand. Thanks!
