Both high and low pressure systems are irregularly shaped and the terrain over which they travel often effects wind conditions. Nevertheless, we can make some educated guesses about the wind directions around high and low pressure systems. In the northern hemisphere, the idealized flow is clockwise (cw) and outward for highs, and counter clockwise (ccw) and inward for lows.
Consider two identical strong high pressure systems as shown.
A. What would you surmise about the wind direction at station A, located directly between the centers of the two highs?
B. What would you surmise about the wind direction at station B, located equidistant from the centers of the two highs, but well north?
(A hint: Think of how the winds from each high would add at each station's location.)
