The Physics Puzzler

The waiter brings to you a hot cup of coffee, but you decide to wait for your breakfast before drinking it. You are going to put cream into the coffee. The cream is at room temperature. If you want the coffee (with cream) to be as hot as possible when your breakfast arrives, should you put the cream in immediately or wait until the breakfast arrives? Be sure to carefully explain your reasoning!
