HEALTH CAREERS OPPORTUNITY PROGRAM (HCOP)

  

 


 

HEALTH CAREERS OPPORTUNITY PROGRAM (HCOP) is designed to enhance the mathematical proficiency, problem solving abilities and reading competency of college-bound graduates in the 16 secondary schools of the Virgin Islands.   It also advises UVI science and mathematics majors on applying to medical and health professional schools, and assists in strengthening test-taking abilities, particularly for the MCAT and GRE entrance exams.  Its goal is to increase the number of disadvantaged Virgin Islanders admitted to health profession schools.  HCOP seeks to better students at various stages in the educational pipeline through direct educational programs, as well as through a series of partnerships.  These programs and partnerships will provide internships, mentoring, and information dissemination through the ready availability of role models, varied primary care exposure activities, and different health research opportunities.  HCOP hopes to recruit more students into the health related careers by sparking interest at an early stage of their educational careers and by providing a full range of services to assist UVI science majors apply to health professional schools.  Dr. Sandra Romano is the Pre-Health Profession advisor at UVI.  Her office is in the Marine Science Center Room 208.  Students may contact her at sromano@uvi.edu or 693-1389.
