PROGRAM (HCOP)

HEALTH CAREERS OPPORTUNITY PROGRAM
(HCOP) is designed to enhance the mathematical proficiency, problem solving abilities
and reading competency of college-bound graduates in the 16 secondary schools
of the Virgin Islands. It also advises UVI science and mathematics
majors on applying to medical and health professional schools, and assists in
strengthening test-taking abilities, particularly for the MCAT and GRE entrance
exams. Its goal is to increase the
number of disadvantaged Virgin Islanders admitted to health profession
schools. HCOP seeks to better students
at various stages in the educational pipeline through direct educational
programs, as well as through a series of partnerships. These programs and partnerships will provide
internships, mentoring, and information dissemination through the ready
availability of role models, varied primary care exposure activities, and
different health research opportunities.
HCOP hopes to recruit more students into the health related careers by
sparking interest at an early stage of their educational careers and by
providing a full range of services to assist UVI science majors apply to health
professional schools. Dr. Sandra Romano
is the Pre-Health Profession advisor at UVI. Her office is in the Marine Science Center
Room 208. Students may contact her at sromano@uvi.edu or 693-1389.
