UVI Fall Semester Nearing End; Finals Begin Dec. 5

The 2008 fall semester is nearing an end for UVI students, with classes ending today, Thursday, Dec. 4. Final exam are scheduled from Friday, Dec. 5, through Thursday, Dec. 11.

International Students Invited to Apply for UVI Scholarships

International students are invited to apply for University of the Virgin Islands scholarships for the 2008-2009 academic year. International scholarships are provided by the Orville Kean Family Scholarship Fund and administered by the UVI Scholarship Committee. Wednesday, Dec. 10, is the deadline to apply.

To be considered, students must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 and be martriculated into an eligible program at UVI. They must also complete an application, not be receiving aid in excess of the cost of attendance and submit one letter of recommendation. Priority will be given to candidates pursuing a first degree.

Applications are available at the University's Office of Institutional Advancement on St. Thomas and from Financial Aid Offices and the libraries on both campuses.

Employee Flexible Spending Enrollment Period Ends Dec. 5

The deadline for UVI employees to enroll in 2009 Flexible Spending Program is Friday, Dec. 5, at the close of business. Employees who whish to participate should refer to an email sent today (Dec. 4) by UVI Director, Employee Benefits & Immigration Services for details and access to a Salary Redirection Form.

Noted Climate Experts to Address V.I. Prospects at UVI Workshop on Feb. 6

A one-day conference for individuals concerned about the impact climate change will have in the U.S. Virgin Islands is scheduled for Feb. 6, 2009, on St. Thomas at the University of the Virgin Islands.

Keynote speakers for the conference are Dr. Leonard Nurse, a University of the West Indies researcher who, along with former Vice Predsident Al Gore, was part of the United Nations team awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for their climate-related efforts, and Dr. Ulric "Neville" Trotz, the senior advisor of the Caribbean Community Climate Change Center in Belize.

The conference goal is to heighten awareness of what climate change could mean for the Virgin Islands and to develop guidelines, policies and procedures to address potential threats to the islands' ecology and economy. Drs. Nurse and Ulric are expected to share their ideas about what Virgin Islanders can expect as global climate changes continue and to discuss a range of possible solutions. Input Sought from UVI Ag Fair 2009 Exhibitors

Members of the UVI community who wish to have a presence for their divisions or offices at the 2009 Virgin Islands Agriculture and Food Fair are being asked to provide input to the UVI Research and Public Service Steering Committee. The committee is planning the design and layout of the University's exhibit for the fair which runs from Feb. 14 through 16. Space is limited and it is critical that prospective UVI participants provide the necessary information to Clarice Clarke at 692-4060 or email at cclarke@uvi.edu. A program needs form was sent to UVI employees via email on Thursday, Nov. 4.

UVI Bookstore Notes ...

Holiday Sales Offered at St. Thomas, St. Croix Bookstores

Holiday sales have been announced by the UVI Bookstores on St. Thomas and St. Croix. On St. Thomas, selected gift items are offered from 30 to 50 percent off. The sale ends on Dec. 22. On St. Croix, in addition to featured electronics, selected clothing is on sale from 10 to 50 percent off. The sale continues through Dec. 17. The St. Croix Bookstore will be closed Dec. 18 and 19 for remodeling.

Textbook Buyback Programs Begin Dec. 5 on Both Campuses

The textbook buyback program for the fall semester on St. Croix is scheduled to run from Friday, Dec. 5, through Friday, Dec. 12. Store hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The fall semester textbook buyback program on St. Thomas will run from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. on Dec. 5 to Dec. 11, with special hours on Saturday, Dec. 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Dec. 18 is Deadline for Students to Apply for National Student Exchange Program

December 18 is the deadline for UVI students to apply for participation in the National Student Exchange Program (NSE). The program is open to full-time undergraduate students. It provides the opportunity to attend another school in the NSE network at little or no additional cost to that of attending UVI. Nearly 200 diverse colleges and universities in the United States and its territories participate. NSE coordinators are available on the St. Croix and St. Thomas campuses to provide students with additional information and qualifications. Reichhold Announces Holiday Schedule for Ticket Office

UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts Ticketing Services Department (Box Office) has announced the schedule it will observe during the University's Christmas Break. The Box Office will be closed on Wednesday, Dec. 24, through Friday Dec. 26. The office will be open on Saturday, Dec. 27, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Monday, Dec. 29 and Tuesday, Dec. 30, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Box Office will be closed on Wednesday, Dec. 31, and Thursday, January 1, 2009. Regular Box Office business hours resume on Friday, Jan. 2.

Tickets for any upcoming performances at the Reichhold Center can also be purchased at these regular ticket outlets; Modern Music, V.I. Bridal & Tuxedo, Urban Threadz, Essentric Shoe Boutique, Island Video (Nisky) and Home Again (Red Hook). More information is also available on the Reichhold Center web site: www.reichholdcenter.com.

UVI-CES to Hold Holiday Baking Workshops

The University of the Virgin Islands Cooperative Extension Services' Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program on the St. Croix campus will conduct free workshops on making sweet breads and fruit cakes for the holidays. Two sessions of the sweet bread workshop are set for Tuesday, Dec. 9, while two sessions on making fruit cakes are planned for Wednesday, Dec. 10. The morning session of each workshop runs from 9 a.m. to noon. Afternoon sessions are slated for 1 to 4 p.m. Both will be offered in room 134 of the UVI Research and Extension Center on the St. Croix campus.

UVI Hosting Health Disparities Conference on St. Croix

Some of the nation's leading scholars on medicine and health are meeting at the University of the Virgin Islands St. Croix campus from Dec. 4-7 for a conference to address health disparities in minority communities and to develop recommendations for eliminating them.

The prestigious conference will be hosted by the UVI Caribbean Exploratory Research Center, established with grants from the National Institutes of Health's National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities, as well as the Medical University of South Carolina and the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation. The purpose of the Caribbean Exploratory Center is to study disparities and provide the medical community, government officials and individuals with the information and tools needed to reduce and ultimately eliminate health disparities in minority populations. Third Annual Woodworkers' Expo to be Held on St. Thomas

The University of the Virgin Islands' Cooperative Extension Service (CES) announces the third annual Virgin Islands Woodworkers Expo. This event will take place at the UVI Sport and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus from Dec. 5 through 7. It will feature the works of members of the St. Thomas/St. John Woodworkers Society and of St. Croix Wood Artists, Inc. The expo opens at 1 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 5 and at 10 a.m. on Dec. 6 and 7. Annual UVI Christmas Concert Set Dec. 6 at Reichhold Center

The UVI Music Program's Annual Christmas Concert will be held at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6, at the Reichhold Center for the Arts. Professor Martin J. Lamkin will direct the Jazz Ensemble, Shenelle Warner will direct the Steel Pan Ensemble, and Professor Lorna Young-Wright will direct the Concert Choir. This seasonal celebration will also include pianist Louis Taylor as a guest artist.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students. They may be purchased at the Reichhold Center Box Office, Dockside Bookstore in the Havensight Mall, the UVI Bookstore, the Humanities Division Office and from ensemble members.

The concert is presented by UVI's Humanities and Social Sciences Division.

St. Croix Holiday Red & White Holiday Gala Set for Dec. 13

The annual Red and White Holiday Gala for UVI's St. Croix campus is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. on Dec. 13 at the Parrot's Cove in Christianstead. Entertainment will be provided by Digital Band. Complimentary tickets (one per employee) are available now from Irene Ramos in the Campus Executive Administrator's Office. Guest tickets cost $30. For details call 692-4236.

St. Thomas Campus Holiday Dinner Dance Set for Dec. 14

The annual Holiday Dinner and Dance on UVI's St. Thomas campus is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 14 at the Administration and Conference Center (ACC). Music will be provided by Top Notch Band. Attire will be elegant evening wear. Complimentary tickets (one per employee) are available at the Human Resources Office in the Administration and Conference Center. Guest tickets cost $20. 2008 Holiday Recess Schedule

UVI's Human Resources Department has announced the 2008 Holiday Recess as approved by President LaVerne E. Ragster. The recess is as follows: All offices will be closed for holiday recess beginning Monday, Dec. 22, 2008, through Friday, January 2, 2009. Offices will reopen on Monday, Jan. 5, 2009. In observance of Three King's Day, all offices will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009. Normal business hours will resume on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009.

Spring Semester 2009 Registration Information Posted

UVI FBLA Students Attend DC Conference

Members of UVI's Future Business Leaders of America Phi Beta Lambda Chapter traveled to Washington, DC from Nov. 13-17, for the group's Annual National Fall Leadership Conference. The organization is compromised of schools from across the nations that come together and compete, as well as attending seminars such as resume writing and entrepreneurship.

Students attending from UVI were Sharifa Skelton, Desiree Burton, Shanitta Bedminster, Charva Richards, Malon Angol, Lemuel Ryan, Oswin Sewer Jr, Alvona Connor, Leah Hughes, Keyonna Williams, Timarah Hodge, Kishma Freeman, and Burnette Williams. Traveling along with them were professional member Bernard Douglas Jr. and advisor Professor Elmo Adams.

UVI Participating in 2008-2009 United Way Campaign

The 2008-2009 United Way Campaign is now underway. The total UVI goal for 2008-2009 is to raise $20,000 for this worthy community cause. Individuals may make a tax-deductible contribution as a one-time amount via cash or check or through payroll deductions. United Way Payroll Deduction Cards are available in the UVI Human Resources Office on St. Thomas and in the UVI Business Office on St. Croix. For more than 28 years, the United Way organizations of St. Thomas/St. John and St. Croix have funded more than 75 agencies that help thousands in our communities.

UVI's 2008-2009 United Way co-coordinators are Nereida Washington - 692-4161, Desha Brathwaite - 693-1462 and LilyMae Durante - 693-1144. They are available to answer questions and assist with any concerns.

Volunteers Sought for UVI Fundraising Activities

UVI's Office of Institutional Advancement is seeking volunteers to assist with fundraising activities and special events for the University. This is a unique opportunity for individuals to network with people throughout the Virgin Islands community while helping to plan and develop signature events on both campuses.
