Town Hall Meeting on Emergency Preparedness Set for June 5 on St. Thomas Campus
An Emergency Preparedness Town Hall Meeting will be held on UVI's St. Thomas campus from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday, June 5, in the first-floor conference room of the Administration and Conference Center. All St. Thomas campus students and employees are encouraged to participate. The session, which coincides with the June start of hurricane season, will cover emergency procedures for hurricanes and other emergencies, such as shootings, pandemics, flooding and fires. The new stationery link makes it possible to order business cards and letterhead online. The listed prices include shipping. Once submitted, your order, with the invoice, will arrive in about 10 business days.

Summer Bridge 2 Calculus Program Offered for College-Bound Students on St. Thomas
UVI's Division of Science and Mathematics will conduct a six-week Summer Bridge 2 Calculus program on the St. Thomas campus, with daily sessions from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., from June 22 to July 31. There is no cost to participants and lunch is provided. High school students who have completed grade 12 or students who are already attending UVI who have successfully completed the MAT 024 course are eligible to apply.
The Summer Bridge2Calculus program is designed to enhance the mathematics preparedness of college-bound students who are interested in pursuing careers in science, mathematics, engineering, technology or medicine. It will prepare students to enroll in the introductory calculus course and provide a foundation for success in that important course. Through this experience, students will gain confidence in tackling new problems, thus moving from a level of knowledge and comprehension to a level of application and analysis. This will strengthen the student's ability to succeed in a strongly quantitative science curriculum. Field trips will enhance connections to biology, chemistry, physics and the environment. Participants who complete the Summer Bridge 2 Calculus program will receive a certificate of completion and a book scholarship worth $500 if they are attending UVI in the fall of 2009.
Honors Mathematics Workshop Offered for College-Bound Students on St. Croix
UVI's Division of Science and Mathematics will conduct a two-week Honors Mathematics Workshop on the St. Croix campus, with daily sessions from 9 a.m. to noon, from July 6 to July 17. There is no cost to participants. High school students leaving grades 9, 10, 11 or 12 are eligible to apply.
The workshop is designed to enhance the mathematics preparedness of college-bound students who are interested in pursuing careers in science, mathematics, engineering or technology. It will focus on computational science and mathematical explorations in scientific contexts, with the goal of helping students to understand how mathematics is used in science. Through this workshop, students will gain confidence in tackling new problems, thus moving from a level of knowledge and comprehension to a level of application and analysis. This will strengthen the students' ability to succeed in a strongly quantitative science curriculum. Field trips will enhance connections to biology, chemistry, physics and the environment. Participants who complete the Math Honors Workshop will receive a certificate of completion and a book scholarship worth $150.

36 Future Global Leaders Participating in Summer Institute
UVI's 15th annual Summer Institute for Future Global Leaders is underway on the St. Thomas campus. Thirty-six college juniors, seniors and graduate students from 20 universities in the Caribbean and U.S. are participating in the intensive, two-week leadership training program. UVI President Dr. LaVerne E. Ragster addressed participants at the Summer Institute's opening session on Thursday, May 21. She challenged the students to take advantage of the opportunities they were being offered. The institute's training covers the areas of culture and communications, the global business environment, and leadership theories and practices. It includes classroom instruction, leadership laboratory exercises and extracurricular cultural activities.
Eighteen professors and other professionals are presenting the Sumer Institute under the leadership of Dr. Solomon Kabuka, a professor of business administration at UVI. Students who complete the program receive a certificate in global leadership development at the commencement ceremony scheduled for Wednesday, June 3, and three college credits.
4-H Summer Academy Registration Set June 1-5
The 4-H Summer Academy will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. from June 29 to August 7, 2009. Academy hours will be from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays. The Academy is available to youth ages five to 14 on St. Croix and St. Thomas.
The general public will register from June 1 through 5. The fee for the general public is $200 for the first child and $175 for each additional child. Public Aftercare will cost $150 per child. Youth and counselors will receive t-shirts and insurance, which are included in the fee. A money order made out to UVI-CES is required. Parents and guardians must bring immunization cards and birth certificates to register their children.

Summer Session II, Fall Semester Registration
- Registration for UVI's 2009 Summer Session II is continuing. Summer Session class schedules are available from the Academics section of the UVI web - www.uvi.edu. They are also available from this direct link. Final registration for Summer Session II classes is set for June 25 and classes run from June 26 through July 31.

through Aug. 7, 2009. Returning students will be able to register

UVI Offers Financial Assistance to Summer Session Students
Individuals who are registered, or who are planning to register, for 2009 Summer Session classes at the University of the Virgin Islands are invited to visit the University's Financial Aid Offices to determine if they are eligible for financial aid or direct loans. Prospective students can visit the Financial Aid Offices - in the Administration and Conference Center on St. Thomas and in the Evans Center on St. Croix - to begin processing aid requests. WTJX Launches 'Home Grown' Garden Project with UVI's CES and Department of Agriculture
The Virgin Islands Public Television System, WTJX Channel 12, in partnership with the University of the Virgin Islands Cooperative Extension Service (CES), and the Virgin Islands Department of Agriculture, are launching "Home Grown," a home garden project. "Home Grown" is an outreach project and television program designed to address several critical issues, including the extremely high cost and poor quality of fresh vegetables imported into the Virgin Islands, a desire to encourage healthy eating habits, and an effort to help Virgin Islands' residents save money.

GERS Retirement Workshop Schedule Provided to UVI Employees
The 2009 Government Employees Retirement System (GERS) retirement workshop schedule has been released to UVI employees via email by Veda Richards, UVI Director of Employee Benefits and Immigration Services. UVI's Eastern Caribbean Center Conducting 2009 V.I. Community Survey
The Eastern Caribbean Center of the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) will conduct the 2009 Virgin Islands Community Survey (VICS) during the months of April through July. This scientific survey of a sample of households is a follow-up to the one conducted in 2008 that collected information similar to that gathered in the census of 2000. SBDC, UVI and SBA to Mark Small Business Week - June 1-5 - in the V.I.
June 1 through 5 will be observed as Small Business Week in the Virgin Islands, under the sponsorship of the Virgin Islands Small Business Development (SBDC), the University of the Virgin Islands and the U.S. Small Business Administration. The week's activities - including seminars, small business boot camps and annual awards ceremonies - have been planned on St. Thomas and St. Croix in collaboration with FirstBank, The Rotary Club of St. Croix-Mid Isle and the St. Thomas/St. John Chamber of Commerce.
The FirstBank seminar - "Grow Your Business with Strong Credit and Good Planning" - will be presented from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, June 1, on St. Thomas, and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 3, on St. Croix. The St. Thomas session will be held at the SBDC Training Facility at Nisky Center. On St. Croix, the seminar will take place at the SBDC Training Center at Sunshine Mall. Both seminars are free, but pre-registration is required.
A two-day, small business boot camp - titled "The Playbook for Success" - originally scheduled to be offered on St. Croix and St. Thomas, has been cancelled for both locations due to circumstances beyond the control of the SBDC.
The Small Business Annual Awards ceremony on St. Croix will be held from noon to 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 4, at Gertrude's Restaurant in conjunction with The Rotary Club of St. Croix-Mid Isle. The ceremony on St. Thomas will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, June 5, at the UVI Administration and Conference Center (Old Harvey Student Center) in conjunction with a St. Thomas/St. John Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours Reception (See details in the "SBDC Notes..." section below.).

SBDC's Annual St. Thomas-St. John Small Business Awards Set June 5
The Virgin Islands Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will host the 2009 St. Thomas-St. John
Small Business Awards Ceremony at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, June 5, at UVI's Administration & Conference Center (formerly the Harvey Building) on the St. Thomas campus. The ceremony, which is part of the local observance of Small Business Week, will also serve as a St. Thomas-St. John Chamber of Commerce Business After-Hours event.
Recognized during the evening will be Small Business Person of the Year Ashley L. Allen, Sr., of Smooth Kreationz. Other awards to be presented include: the Woman-Owned Business Award to Michelle Joshua of New Horizon Clothing; the Small Business Advocate of the Year Award to José Penn of Penn's Corporation; Entrepreneur of the Year Awards to Alisonia Griffith and Julie Merrifield of Commercial Services, Inc.; and the Nascent Business of the Year Award to Karen Bowry of The Mail Hub. FirstBank Virgin Islands will be recognized as the Small Business Development Center Contributor of the Year.
Special awards will be presented to Dr. LaVerne E. Ragster, president of the University of the Virgin Islands, and to Carl Christensen, the SBA Project officer for the U.S. Virgin Islands. Three schools, Addelita Cancryn Junior High School, Charlotte Amalie High School and Tutu Church of God Academy, will be recognized as mentors of the Innovative Youth Business Concept Competition. Small Business Development Center employees will also be honored.
