Alumni T-Shirts Offered as Holiday Gifts from UVI Alumni Offices

UVI's Alumni Affairs Offices on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses are offering alumni t-shirts for sale for $10. Director of Annual Giving and Alumni Affairs Linda I. Smith said the shirts make great holiday gifts and stocking stuffers for family, friends, students, co-workers and parents.

The t-shirts are available in the following sizes: S, M, L, XL and 2XL. They can be purchased at the Alumni Offices in the Office of Institutional Advancement on the St. Thomas campus and in Research and Extension Center Building Room 107-109 on the St. Croix campus.

UVI Senate Meeting Scheduled for Friday, Nov. 11

The UVI Senate will hold its next meeting from 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 11, via videoconference, in Teacher Education Room 101 on St. Thomas and in Evans Center Room 713 on St. Croix. Items on the agenda include the UVI Business Interest and Consultancy Policy, the UVI Senate Self-Assessment and other matters. All meetings of the UVI Senate are open to the public.

Dr. Hall to Appear on WTJX Program 'Face to Face' on Dec. 16

UVI President Dr. David Hall will appear on the Virgin Islands Public Television WTJX program "Face to Face" at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 16. Members of the University community are encouraged to watch the program.

Dr. Hall's Next Visit to St. Croix Campus Slated for Dec. 17

UVI President Dr. David Hall's regularly scheduled visit to the St. Croix campus for today (Thursday, Dec. 10) has been cancelled. His next scheduled visit to the St. Croix campus is on Thursday, Dec. 17.

UVI Libraries, ITS Announce Holiday Schedule

UVI's libraries and the Information Technology Services (ITS) component will observe Intersession hours on Wednesday, Dec. 16, and Friday, Dec. 18. On those days, the Libraries and IT services will be available from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The libraries on both campuses will be closed to patrons on Thursday, Dec. 17, to allow for the annual ITS retreat. Helpdesk services will be available via ext. 1466. Users may also forward service requests to helpdesk@uvi.edu.

The libraries will be closed during the University Holiday Recess, beginning Dec. 21. They will reopen on Jan. 4, 2010.

Agrifest 2010 Organizers Advise Vendors, Visitors to Plan Ahead

With February 2010 still in the distance, organizers of the 39th St. Croix Agriculture and Food fair are urging the public not to let the holiday season pass without making their plans to attend this year's fair.

Vendors, farmers and exhibitors are being reminded that display space is in high demand for the largest fair of its kind in the Caribbean. Those who wait until after Three Kings Day to pick up vendor applications or book their reservations sometimes find it difficult to get what they need, said Stafford Crossman from UVI's Cooperative Extension Service.

UVI Student Government Leaders Receive National Certification

Eight members of the University of the Virgin Islands Student Government Association, representing the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses, recently received credentials as certified student leaders in Washington, D.C. They were among 169 U.S. college and university students who passed a certification exam administered during the recent National Conference on Student Leadership.

SGA Presidents Jaedee Caines (STT) and Jessica Taylor (STX) were among those receiving certification. They were joined by Vice Presidents Kim Phillip-St. Hall (STX) and St. Clair Hodge (STT), St. Croix Campus Treasurer Kelly-Ann M. Joseph, Secretaries Takesia Martinez (STX)and Leah Hughes (STT) and St. Thomas Campus Public Relations Officer Campbell Douglas.

St. Thomas Bookstore Sets Book Buyback Dec. 9-12 and Dec. 14-16

The UVI St. Thomas campus Bookstore will conduct its fall semester book buyback program from Dec. 9 through 12 and Dec. 14 through 16. Store hours for the book buyback are 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Saturday. Students must present a UVI bookstore receipt to participate in the program.

St. Croix Bookstore Sets Book Buyback and Holiday Sale Dec. 9-16

The UVI St. Croix campus Bookstore will conduct its fall semester book buyback program from Dec. 9 through 16. The buyback program will be available during regular store hours, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Bookstore will also conduct a holiday sale, with discounts on selected merchandise, during the same period.

St. Croix Campus Holiday Gala Set for Dec. 12 at Divi; Ticket Deadline Dec. 10

Thursday, Dec. 10, is the deadline for obtaining tickets for the Annual UVI Holiday Gala event for UVI's St. Croix campus. The gala is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12, at the Divi Carina Bay Resort. The evening's theme will be "Shades of Blue." Tickets - which are complimentary for faculty and staff and $35 for guests - are now available in the Office of the Executive Administrator- St. Croix Campus. Concert Choir to Offer Caroling and Cake Dec. 11 on St. Thomas Campus

Members of UVI's Concert Choir will offer Christmas cheer for the body and soul in the form of caroling and a cake sale from 10 a.m. to noon on the St. Thomas campus on Friday, Dec. 11. After the caroling, which will include various locations around campus, cake and music will be available at the Music Building beginning at 1 p.m.

4th Annual Woodworkers' Expo to be Held on St. Croix Dec. 11-13

The University of the Virgin Islands Cooperative Extension Service announces the fourth annual Virgin Islands' Woodworkers' Expo. The expo will take place at the Great Hall on UVI's St. Croix campus from Dec. 11 through 13. It will feature the works of the St. Thomas/St. John Woodworkers Society and St. Croix Wood Artists, Inc.

The expo will open at 1 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 11, and 10 a.m. on Dec. 12 and 13. This is your opportunity to view and purchase the exquisite quality work of some of the finest woodworkers anywhere. The expo will also feature demonstrations by master woodworkers Avelino Samuel of St. John, Afreekan Southwell and William Johnson of St. Thomas, and Bien Brignoni of St. Croix.

St. Thomas Campus Holiday Gala Set Dec. 19 at Marriott; Ticket Deadline Dec. 14

Monday, Dec. 14, is the deadline for obtaining tickets to the Annual UVI Holiday Gala event for UVI's St. Thomas campus. The gala is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 19, at the Frenchman's Reef and Morning Star Marriott Beach Resort. Music will be provided by Spectrum Band. Employee tickets are complimentary. Guest tickets are $35. They will be available beginning Tuesday, Dec. 1, from the Human Resources Office in the Administration and Conference Center.

Reichhold Center Offers Sneak Peak at Soweto Gospel Choir

The Reichhold Center for the Arts invites the public to a sneak peek at the Soweto Gospel Choir featured on the home page of the Reichhold's web site: http://www.reichholdcenter.com.

The Soweto Gospel choir will launch its U.S. tour with a performance at the Reichhold Center at 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 15, 2010. The choir, based in South Africa, will perform a series of traditional American gospel songs, along with upbeat African freedom songs. The choir is noted for its explosive harmonies and exuberant choreography. Performing in colorful African attire, the Soweto Gospel Choir's presentation is stunning.

In 2007 the choir received a Grammy Award for Best Traditional World Music Album, followed by a 2008 Grammy Award for its third album, "African Spirit."

UVI Students Invited to Participate in Model U.N. Competition in 2010

UVI is seeking students interested in participating in the third annual UVI Model U.N. Competition scheduled for March 18, 2010, on the St. Thomas campus. The competition is open to all UVI students on both campuses who have taken or who plan to take any political science course at the University.

Students who participate will experience a wide variety of opportunities, including representing their campus, gaining knowledge of the world, improving their public speaking, sharpening problem solving skills, learning conflict resolution, improving research and writing skills and making a difference in the world.

UVI Financial Aid/Scholarship Students Advised to Visit Cashier's Offices

Returning UVI students who have received financial aid or scholarships, and who have registered for the spring 2010 semester, can now visit Cashier's Offices on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses to pay for classes. Failure to do so will result in classes being cancelled. Students must contact the Cashier's Offices in person to have their awards credited to their accounts. The last day to pay for classes for the spring 2010 semester is Jan. 5, 2010. St. Thomas Golden Key Society Collecting Clothing for Haiti

The St. Thomas chapter of the Golden Key International Honor Society is conducting a clothing drive for families and individuals in need on Haiti. Donated clothing can be dropped off at the Counseling Services/Student Affairs Center on the St. Thomas campus from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Nov. 30. Youth Participants Sought for 4-H Groups' 2010 St. Croix Festival Troupe

The 4-H Program of UVI's Cooperative Extension Service is looking for Virgin Islands children between the ages of five and 12 to become a part of a 4-H Festival Troupe that will participate in the 2010 St. Croix Christmas Festival Children's Parade. St. Thomas Golden Key Raising Funds for Children's Christmas Gifts

The St. Thomas chapter of the Golden Key International Honour Society is partnering with the Salvation Army to supply Christmas gifts for some of the less fortunate children in the community. Monetary contributions, cash and checks or money orders made out to Golden Key-UVI, are being accepted by Chapter Faculty Advisor Dr. Patricia Harkins-Pierre and chapter Public Relations Officer Eustus Saunders. UVI Holiday Recess Schedule

UVI's Human Resources Office has announced that UVI President Dr. David Hall has approved the 2009 Administrative end-of-the-year Holiday Recess.

All offices will be closed for the holiday recess from Monday, Dec. 21, 2009, through Friday, Jan. 1, 2010. All offices will reopen on Monday, Jan. 4, 2010. In observance of Three King's Day, all offices will be closed on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010. Normal business hours will resume on Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010. Note: Paid "Administrative Leave" is applicable only for the regular work week (from Monday through Friday).

UVI Revises Academic Calendar for Spring Semester 2010

The University of the Virgin Islands has announced the revision of its Academic Calendar covering the 2010 spring semester. The calendar stipulates the schedule for all academic activities at the University for the period from Jan. 4 through May 16, 2010.

The revised calendar begins on Jan. 4, the date UVI staff members will return from the holiday break. UVI faculty members return on Jan. 7. New student orientation and registration are set for Jan. 7. Advisement and late registration are scheduled for Jan. 8. Spring semester classes begin on Jan. 11. NSE Applications Available from Counseling Services Office

Students interested in studying abroad through the National Student Exchange (NSE) program may obtain the NSE application and directory booklet from UVI Counseling Services office on the St. Thomas campus. Applications are currently being accepted for the 2010-2011 academic year. Interested students are encouraged to start the application process as early as possible. UVI English Placement Tests Scheduled for Jan. 5, 2010

UVI English Placement tests are scheduled to be administered on Jan. 5, 2010. On the St. Thomas campus the testing will be held in Room 222 of the Sports and Fitness Center. On the St. Croix campus the test will be held in Evens Center Room 401. Students should bring a photo ID and two pens with blue or black ink.

The testing schedule is as follows:

  • 8:30-9 a.m. - Registration
  • 9:00-10 a.m. - English 100
  • 10-10:15 a.m. - Break
  • 10:15-11:15 a.m. - English 101

English Placement tests are offered for students who have never taken the SAT or who took the SAT and scored below 500 in Reasoning or below 21 on the ACT-English. Students who took but did not pass the test(s) may not take the tests again.

Emergency Operations Training Set for Emergency Responders

The V.I. Office of Homeland Security will conduct an Emergency Operations Center (EOC) Operations and Planning for All-Hazards Events training sessions on St. Croix and St. Thomas.

On St. Croix, the three-day training began on Wednesday, Dec. 9, and concludes on Dec. 11. On St. Thomas sessions begin on Monday, Dec. 14. All sessions will be held 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Charles Harwood Medical Complex on St. Croix and the UVICELL Center on St. Thomas.

Participants in this training will include emergency responders, supervisors and managers representing a number of agencies such as VITEMA, Juan F. Luis Hospital, St. Thomas Rescue and the American Red Cross.

The course provides the opportunity for participants to practice emergency management and gain practical experience in individual and group processes necessary to manage an Emergency Operations Center. Participants will also obtain a better understanding of the management requirements and skills necessary to effectively coordinate and support the response.

The EOC training is funded by a grant through the V.I. Office of Homeland Security and administered by the University of the Virgin Islands Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center, which serves as the official training center for the V.I. Office of Homeland Security.

SBDC Offers Seminars on Preparing Success Plans for Business

The Virgin Island Small Business Development Center (VI SBDC) will present two seminars designed to help prepare success plans for small businesses in December on St. Thomas.

"Show Me the Money! The Narrative for Preparing a Success Plan for Your Business" will be offered on Thursday, Dec. 10. The second seminar, "Show Me the Money! The Financials for Preparing a Success Plan for Your Business," will follow on Wednesday, Dec. 16. Both sessions are scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. at the SBDC Training Facility at Nisky Center.

The presenter is Daryl Edwards, a business counselor at the VI SBDC. Admission is $25 for each seminar. Admission for individuals who pre-register for both seminars is only $35. The discount admission for those who pre-register for one seminar is $20. UVI students, staff, faculty and veterans of the U.S. military with proper ID will be admitted for free. Pre-registration is required to qualify for free admission.

It is recommended that business owners or potential business owners have a success plan for their business. These seminars will focus on the basics of how to put together a success plan. A succe ss plan is a great guide for the day to day operations of any business. They are mandatory for businesses to qualify for bank loans.
