UVI Sophomore Marcellina Ventura Crowned Miss St. Croix Festival Queen

Congratulations to UVI sophomore Marcellina Ventura who was crowned Miss St. Croix Festival Queen on Sunday, Dec. 13. In addition to the overall crown, Ventura won the "Miss Intellect," best cultural dress and "Miss Popularity" titles.

St. Thomas Campus Holiday Gala Set Dec. 19 at Marriott; Ticket Deadline Today

Today (Monday, Dec. 14) is the deadline for obtaining tickets to the Annual UVI Holiday Gala event for UVI's St. Thomas campus. The gala is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 19, at the Frenchman's Reef and Morning Star Marriott Beach Resort. Music will be provided by Spectrum Band. Employee tickets are complimentary. Guest tickets are $35. They will be available beginning Tuesday, Dec. 1, from the Human Resources Office in the Administration and Conference Center.

Dr. Hall to Appear on WTJX Program 'Face to Face' on Dec. 16

UVI President Dr. David Hall will appear on the Virgin Islands Public Television WTJX program "Face to Face" at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 16. Members of the University community are encouraged to watch the program and call in at 774-6255.

President's Office Schedules Open Houses Dec. 17 and 18

Members of the UVI faculty and staff are cordially invited to open house events hosted by the Office of the President, Dr. David Hall, on Thursday, Dec. 17, on the St. Croix campus and on Friday, Dec. 18 on St. Thomas campus.

The St. Croix open house is scheduled from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the Great House Room A 214. The St. Thomas open house is scheduled for 3 to 4:30 p.m. in Suite 321 of the Administration and Conference Center. Light refreshments will be served at both events.

St. Thomas Bookstore Book Buyback Continues Dec. 14-16; Holiday Sale Offered

The UVI St. Thomas campus Bookstore continues its fall semester book buyback program from Dec. 14 through 16. Store hours for the book buyback are 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Students must present a UVI bookstore receipt to participate in the program.

The St. Thomas Bookstore is also offering a holiday sale, with 20 to 40 percent off on selected clothing items. Regular store hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The sale ends Dec. 18. For more information call (340) 693-1561.

St. Croix Bookstore Sets Book Buyback and Holiday Sale Through Dec. 16

The UVI St. Croix campus Bookstore continues its fall semester book buyback program through Dec. 16. The buyback program will be available during regular store hours, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The St. Croix Bookstore is also conducting a holiday sale, with discounts on selected merchandise, during the same period.

UVI to Close for Holiday Recess from Dec. 21, 2009 through Jan. 1, 2010

UVI's Human Resources Office has announced that UVI President Dr. David Hall has approved the 2009 Administrative end-of-the-year Holiday Recess.

Offices at the University of the Virgin Islands will be closed for the holiday recess from Monday, Dec. 21, 2009, through Friday, Jan. 1, 2010. All offices will reopen on Monday, Jan. 4, 2010. In observance of Three King's Day, all offices will be closed on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010. Normal business hours will resume on Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010.

Alumni T-Shirts Offered as Holiday Gifts from UVI Alumni Offices

UVI's Alumni Affairs Offices on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses are offering alumni t-shirts for sale for $10. Director of Annual Giving and Alumni Affairs Linda I. Smith said the shirts make great holiday gifts and stocking stuffers for family, friends, students, co-workers and parents.

The t-shirts are available in the following sizes: S, M, L, XL and 2XL. They can be purchased at the Alumni Offices in the Office of Institutional Advancement on the St. Thomas campus and in Research and Extension Center Building Room 107-109 on the St. Croix campus.

UVI Libraries, ITS Holiday Schedule Update

UVI's libraries will observe Intersession hours on Wednesday, Dec. 16, and Friday, Dec. 18. On those days, the libraries will be open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The St. Croix Library will close from noon to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 16, to allow for staff professional development. On Thursday, Dec. 17, libraries on both campuses will be closed for the annual Information and Technology Services retreat. Helpdesk services will be available via ext. 1466. Users may also forward service requests to helpdesk@uvi.edu.

The libraries will be closed Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 19 and 20, and during the University Holiday Recess, beginning Dec. 21. They will reopen on Jan. 4, 2010.

ITS Offers 'A/V Equipment Amnesty' on St. Thomas

UVI's Ralph M. Paiewonsky Library is offering an "A/V Equipment Amnesty" the week of Dec. 14 through 18. During this amnesty period all A/V Equipment can be returned to the Ralph M. Paiewonsky Library and all associated overdue fines for this equipment will be waived. A/V Equipment refers to all audio and video equipment available for checkout at the library such as laptops, projectors, cameras, digital voice recorders, portable video players, projector screens, PA systems and other similar devices.

ITS loans A/V Equipment to students, faculty and staff in order to align itself with Vision 2012, emphasizing the use of technology as a tool to enhance teaching and learning and to improve the effectiveness of UVI's educational and administrative processes. In order to provide the best possible service, all UVI students, faculty and staff are asked to return any and all A/V Equipment during this special amnesty period.

Agrifest 2010 Organizers Advise Vendors, Visitors to Plan Ahead

With February 2010 still in the distance, organizers of the 39th St. Croix Agriculture and Food fair are urging the public not to let the holiday season pass without making their plans to attend this year's fair.

Vendors, farmers and exhibitors are being reminded that display space is in high demand for the largest fair of its kind in the Caribbean. Those who wait until after Three Kings Day to pick up vendor applications or book their reservations sometimes find it difficult to get what they need, said Stafford Crossman from UVI's Cooperative Extension Service.

Reichhold Center Offers Sneak Peak at Soweto Gospel Choir

The Reichhold Center for the Arts invites the public to a sneak peek at the Soweto Gospel Choir featured on the home page of the Reichhold's web site: http://www.reichholdcenter.com.

The Soweto Gospel choir will launch its U.S. tour with a performance at the Reichhold Center at 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 15, 2010. The choir, based in South Africa, will perform a series of traditional American gospel songs, along with upbeat African freedom songs. The choir is noted for its explosive harmonies and exuberant choreography. Performing in colorful African attire, the Soweto Gospel Choir's presentation is stunning.

In 2007 the choir received a Grammy Award for Best Traditional World Music Album, followed by a 2008 Grammy Award for its third album, "African Spirit."

UVI Students Invited to Participate in Model U.N. Competition in 2010

UVI is seeking students interested in participating in the third annual UVI Model U.N. Competition scheduled for March 18, 2010, on the St. Thomas campus. The competition is open to all UVI students on both campuses who have taken or who plan to take any political science course at the University.

Students who participate will experience a wide variety of opportunities, including representing their campus, gaining knowledge of the world, improving their public speaking, sharpening problem solving skills, learning conflict resolution, improving research and writing skills and making a difference in the world.

UVI Financial Aid/Scholarship Students Advised to Visit Cashier's Offices

Returning UVI students who have received financial aid or scholarships, and who have registered for the spring 2010 semester, can now visit Cashier's Offices on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses to pay for classes. Failure to do so will result in classes being cancelled. Students must contact the Cashier's Offices in person to have their awards credited to their accounts. The last day to pay for classes for the spring 2010 semester is Jan. 5, 2010. Youth Participants Sought for 4-H Groups' 2010 St. Croix Festival Troupe

The 4-H Program of UVI's Cooperative Extension Service is looking for Virgin Islands children between the ages of five and 12 to become a part of a 4-H Festival Troupe that will participate in the 2010 St. Croix Christmas Festival Children's Parade. St. Thomas Golden Key Raising Funds for Children's Christmas Gifts

The St. Thomas chapter of the Golden Key International Honour Society is partnering with the Salvation Army to supply Christmas gifts for some of the less fortunate children in the community. Monetary contributions, cash and checks or money orders made out to Golden Key-UVI, are being accepted by Chapter Faculty Advisor Dr. Patricia Harkins-Pierre and chapter Public Relations Officer Eustus Saunders. Receipts for tax purposes are available. UVI Revises Academic Calendar for Spring Semester 2010

The University of the Virgin Islands has announced the revision of its Academic Calendar covering the 2010 spring semester. The calendar stipulates the schedule for all academic activities at the University for the period from Jan. 4 through May 16, 2010.

The revised calendar begins on Jan. 4, the date UVI staff members will return from the holiday break. UVI faculty members return on Jan. 7. New student orientation and registration are set for Jan. 7. Advisement and late registration are scheduled for Jan. 8. Spring semester classes begin on Jan. 11. NSE Applications Available from Counseling Services Office

Students interested in studying abroad through the National Student Exchange (NSE) program may obtain the NSE application and directory booklet from UVI Counseling Services office on the St. Thomas campus. Applications are currently being accepted for the 2010-2011 academic year. Interested students are encouraged to start the application process as early as possible. UVI English Placement Tests Scheduled for Jan. 5, 2010

UVI English Placement tests are scheduled to be administered on Jan. 5, 2010. On the St. Thomas campus the testing will be held in Room 222 of the Sports and Fitness Center. On the St. Croix campus the test will be held in Evens Center Room 401. Students should bring a photo ID and two pens with blue or black ink.

The testing schedule is as follows:

  • 8:30-9 a.m. - Registration
  • 9:00-10 a.m. - English 100
  • 10-10:15 a.m. - Break
  • 10:15-11:15 a.m. - English 101

English Placement tests are offered for students who have never taken the SAT or who took the SAT and scored below 500 in Reasoning or below 21 on the ACT-English. Students who took but did not pass the test(s) may not take the tests again.

SBDC Notes...

SBDC Seminar on Preparing Success Plans for Business Set Dec. 16

The Virgin Island Small Business Development Center (VI SBDC) will present a seminar designed to help prepare success plans for small businesses on Wednesday, Dec. 16, on St. Thomas. "Show Me the Money! The Financials for Preparing a Success Plan for Your Business," is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. at the SBDC Training Facility at Nisky Center.

The presenter is Daryl Edwards, a business counselor at the VI SBDC. Admission is $25. UVI students, staff, faculty and veterans of the U.S. military with proper ID will be admitted for free. Pre-registration is required to qualify for free admission.

It is recommended that business owners or potential business owners have a success plan for their business. The seminar will focus on the basics of how to put together a success plan. A success plan is a great guide for the day to day operations of any business. They are mandatory for businesses to qualify for bank loans.
