UVI Senate to Hold First Session on Friday, Feb. 13

As part of the University's ongoing development of Shared Governance, the UVI Senate is scheduled to convene its first session on Friday, Feb. 13, 2009. Formation of the UVI Senate was approved by the UVI Board of Trustees at a special meeting on Saturday, Jan. 31. Details of the scope and function of the UVI Senate are included in UVI's Shared Governance Framework. Friday's session is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the first-floor conference room of the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus and the Great Hall on the St. Croix campus. The session will include orientation exercises, the swearing in of new senators and the election of a UVI Senate chair and vice chair.

Representing the UVI Staff Council in the UVI Senate will be Maria Fleming (STX), Raquel Silver (STX), Nanyamka Farrelly (STT) and Ardrina Scott-Elliott (STT).

UVI Faculty Association representatives are Dr. Simon Jones-Hendrickson (STX), Dr. David Gould (STX), Dr. Alexander Randall (STT) and Dr. Hosana Solomon (STT).

UVI Student Government Association representatives are St. Clair Hodge (STT), Rhashaunda Charles (STT), Joycelyn Connor (STT) and Carl Christopher (STX).

All UVI Senate meetings are open to the entire UVI Community.

Financial Aid Offices to be Closed on Feb. 13 for Staff Training

UVI's Financial Aid offices on both the St. Croix and St. Thomas campuses will be closed on Friday, Feb. 13, to allow for staff participation in a training workshop.

Public Relations Workshops Set Feb. 13 on St. Thomas

The UVI Public Relations Office invites members of the University community to attend Public Relations Workshops on the St. Thomas campus on Friday, Feb. 13, in the second floor conference room of the Administration and Conference Center. (Sessions on St. Croix were conducted on Feb. 10.) Sessions are scheduled at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Topics that will be discussed include branding policy, promotional opportunities, media guidelines and the UVI website. There will be an opportunity for individuals who are responsible for producing printed University materials to gain valuable information and draft critiques. Viewing of UVI Carnival Costume Designs Set for Feb. 13 on St. Croix

There is still time to join UVI's 2009 Carnival Troupe. The next public viewing of costume designs is scheduled at the Cafetorium on the St. Croix campus from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 13. The costume designs will also be on display at the V.I. Agriculture and Food Fair set for Feb. 14 through 16 on the grounds of the Rudolph Shulterbrandt Agriculture Complex on St. Croix.

UVI Troupe Featured on 2009 Carnival Poster

The official St. Thomas Carnival Poster for the 2009 event features a photo of Tamika Archer marching with the University of the Virgin Islands 2007 Carnival troupe, according to a story in the online newspaper St. Thomas Source. New Hires, Promotions List for January Posted to 'Inside UVI'

UVI's Human Resources Office has released the New Hires, Promotions, Change in Titles & Separations list for the period of Jan. 1 through Jan. 31, 2009. The list is available from the "Inside UVI" area of the UVI web site - www.uvi.edu. Members of the UVI faculty and staff accessing "Inside UVI" for the first time need to use their network system login name and the initial password "welcomeUVI." Following that, they will be prompted to make a new, permanent password. When the new password is accepted, select the "Staff Home" or "Faculty Home" link in the list of links on the left side of the page.

Fifth Parent Empowerment Workshop Set for Feb. 19 on St. Thomas

The fifth session in a series of monthly Parent Empowerment Workshops to be offered by the Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence on Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD), the Virgin Islands Family Information Network on Disabilities (VIFIND) and the State Office of Education is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 19, at the new Head Start building (First Street Estate Thomas location) on St. Thomas. The monthly workshops are designed for parents of children with disabilities. It will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

This session will focus specifically on parents of Hispanic background who have children in special education. All materials, information and workshop will be provided in Spanish. Future workshops in the series will focus on a wide variety of issues including employment and college rights, assistive technology and early childhood. Parents will be asked to suggest additional subjects. The February 19th workshop will also include a question and answer session, a resource table with materials in Spanish and dinner.

Faculty, Student Deadlines to Order Commencement Regalia Set on St. Thomas

The St. Thomas campus Commencement Committee has announced that professional staff members who plan to participate in commencement must order regalia for the ceremony no later than Monday, Feb. 23. Orders are placed at the University Bookstore. A late fee will be charged on orders placed after that date. Details and an order form are available from this direct link. VIUCEDD to Offer Course in American Sign Language on St. Thomas

A course on American Sign Language will be offered this spring on St. Thomas by the Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD). The course will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays on UVI's St. Thomas campus from March 3 through May 7. Sessions will be held in Teacher Education room 114. The cost is $130 per person. V.I. Community Invited to Join Queen Mary Highway Walk/Run

The entire Virgin Islands community is invited to participate in the eighth annual 5K Queen Mary Highway Walk/Run scheduled for 6:30 a.m. on Friday, March 13. The run, which is part of the official University of the Virgin Islands Charter Month activities, begins at Kmart and ends on UVI's St. Croix campus. Awards will be given to the top male and female finishers. Registration for UVI faculty, staff and friends is $12. The fee for UVI students and children is $7. The fee includes a commemorative t-shirt and refreshment at the end of the course. The event is co sponsored by UVI and the V.I. Pace Runners association. V.I. Ag and Food Fair Set Feb. 14-16 on St. Croix

With its theme "Agriculture: The Future - Yours and Mine," the Board of Directors of the 38th Annual Agriculture and Food Fair of the U.S. Virgin Islands invites all residents and visitors to participate in the largest agricultural exposition in the territory. Agrifest 2009 will be held Feb. 14 through 16 on the grounds of the Rudolph Shulterbrandt Agriculture Complex on St. Croix. The grounds will open each day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and $2 for children 12 and under.

Opening Ceremonies are set for 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 14. Farmer of the Year Awards will be given to the best crop and livestock farmers. Recognition awards will be presented to Dale Mason, Gwendolyn Fludd, Grantley Samuel, We Grow Food Inc., and the V.I. Farmers' Cooperative.

Institutional Advancement Component Seeks Input on Strategic Plan

UVI's Institutional Advancement Component will host a series of meetings to obtain public input on its strategic plan. Strategic Planning Conversations will be held on Feb. 17, in the Great Hall on UVI's St. Croix campus, on Feb. 18, at the Legislature Conference Room on St. John, and on Feb. 19, in the Administration and Conference Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus. The conversations will run from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on each day. The component is comprised of the following areas at the University: Annual Giving, Major Gifts, Alumni Affairs, Development, Public Relations and the Reichhold Center for the Arts.

PR Seeks Notification of Events Planned During Charter Month - March 2009

As it prepare for the 47th Anniversary of the founding of the University of the Virgin Islands, UVI's Public Relations Office is asking for information - times, dates, locations, target audience, speakers, etc. - about events scheduled to take place on both campuses throughout the month of March 2009. March 16 is the University's actual Charter Day anniversary. In addition to promoting the Charter Day ceremony on that day, Public Relations will compile and publish a list of all Charter month activities and events for the University and wider Virgin Islands communities.

UVI Alumni to Celebrate 40 Years of Nursing Education

The St. Thomas/St. John Chapter of the UVI Alumni Association will host a Charter Day gala titled, "Celebrating 40 Years of Nursing Education at CVI/UVI" with a special recognition of the Class of 1968. Members of the CVI Nursing Class of 1968 include: Celestine Belsijet, Jean Davis, Mariga Fleming, Jean Phaire, Almira Smith, Ophelia Torres, Ivy Williams and Norma Williams.

The gala is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 14, at the Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort on St. Thomas. UVI to Premiere Katrina Documentary as Scholarship Fundraiser

The Virgin Islands premiere of the film "Trouble the Water," which won the best documentary prize at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21, at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts. Proceeds from the premiere will go to support scholarships for UVI students. The powerful, Academy Award-nominated documentary takes viewers inside Hurricane Katrina and its devastating aftermath. A discussion, led by several volunteers who visited the Gulf Coast and saw the aftermath of the storm first-hand, will follow.

Opening for Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning Set Feb. 18

Black Heritage Week - Feb. 15-20 - Events Set for St. Thomas Campus

The Black Heritage Committee of the Student Government Association on UVI's St. Thomas campus will host the following events during Black Heritage Week - Feb. 15 through 20.

  • Monday - Movie Night -- Hotel Rawanda starts at 8 p.m. in the Dining Pavilion.
  • Tuesday - Poster Contest -- $100 cash prize to best poster that depicts
    a time in Black History. The winner will be announced at lunch time in the
    Dining Pavilion.
  • Wednesday - Arts and Craft Night -- begins at 8:30 p.m. in the Dining Pavilion. Bring a t-shirt, decorations will be provided free (Tye-Dye, sequins, jewelry making materials, etc.). Open to the public.
  • Thursday - Motivational Speaker -- during dinner time in Dining Pavilion from 5 to 7 p.m.
  • Friday - Miss Black Heritage Fashion Show -- Starts at 8:30 p.m. First prize: $400.00, Second prize: 100.00, gift-card for miss popularity winner. Contestants will be judged on their introductory speeches and a Black Heritage costumes.

STEM Scholarships Available to UVI Students

The University of the Virgin Islands Emerging Caribbean Scientists (ECS) Programs is offering a variety of scholarships and summer research programs for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) students for the summer 2009 and academic year 2009-2010. This year more than 70 STEM students are expected to receive direct support for tuition, books, conference travel expenses, hourly research salaries and monthly stipends of up to $913. ECS Scholars, as students supported by the programs are called, also receive research and career mentoring.

UVI Faculty, Staff Invited to Meet the Miss UVI Contestants on Feb. 13

Members of the UVI faculty and staff are invited to a Meet the Miss UVI Contestants cocktail party from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 13, in the Great Hall on the St. Croix campus. Three students, two from the St. Croix campus and one from the St. Thomas campus, will be introduced at this formal, fund-raising event. Event attire is semi-formal. Admission is $5 for faculty and staff and $10 for guests. (The contestants will be introduced to students at a later date.) Mangrove Clean-up and Restoration Set for Feb. 15

The Virgin Islands Mangrove Research and Conservation Coalition, will host a "Love Your Mangroves" clean-up and restoration effort from 1 p.m. until sunset on Feb. 15 at -Cas Cay Mangrove Lagoon. The Virgin Islands Mangrove Research and Conservation Coalition, which encompasses several organizations, was formed in 2007 when the University of the Virgin Islands received a grant to support debris removal and monitoring at the Mangrove Lagoon.

Senior Class Student Speaker Competition Set for Feb. 22 on St. Thomas

The advisors of the Senior Class on UVI's St. Thomas campus have selected "Transferable Skills" as the topic for the annual student speaker competition.

Students interested in participating in this competition must be present at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 22, at Chase Auditorium (Business room 110) to present their papers to the senior class. Class members will vote and input will be given from advisors. The first runner-up will serve as the alternate in the event that the winner is unable to be the Student Speaker at commencement.

The competition topic will explore these areas: How will the broad-based education received at UVI facilitate entry into the real world? What skills will be useful, no matter what field one studied or will enter upon graduation? Are there specific skills that can be used to enhance one's transition from student to worker? How might these skills be applicable for those who are going on to graduate school? Are there any specific skills that are transferable to make graduate education more productive and rewarding?

Special Session on Youth Offered as Part of Governor's Safety & Health Conference

As part of the 4th Annual Governor's Safety & Health Conference, a special session will be held on St. Thomas for individuals or companies who interact specifically with youth in the workplace. Entitled "Youth @Work: Talking Safety," the session is slated for 12:30 to 5 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 23 at Marriott's Frenchman's Reef. It will be presented by trainers from the Labor Occupational Health Program at the University of California, at Berkeley. (See a related item in the "Other Current Items ..." section below.)

A special invitation is extended to career technical and vocational education teachers, guidance counselors, job placement and work/school coordinators, workplace supervisors and anyone working directly with employed youth. The registration fee is $75.

This interactive, four-hour session is designed to prepare participants who work with youth already in the workforce, or those preparing to enter the workforce with information to identify young workers at risk for injury, help young workers find ways to make their jobs safer, and use the "Youth @ Work: Talking Safety" curriculum funded by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

UVI to Partner with Agencies on Governor's Safety and Security Conference

The University of the Virgin Islands - Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center in collaboration with the V.I. Department of Labor's Division of Occupational Safety and Health and the V.I. Office of Homeland Security will host the 4th Annual Governor's Safety and Health Conference in February. The conference will be held Feb. 18-20, at the Carambola Beach Resort on St. Croix and Feb. 23-25, at the Marriott Frenchman's Reef on St. Thomas.

This year's theme, "Keeping Paradise Safe and Secure: Together we can...Together we will," represents the combined efforts and dedication of the entities involved to keep worksites safe and ensure that the territory remains secure. The Governor's Safety and Health Conference provides an opportunity for the private and public sectors to come together and learn about developing effective programs to prevent workplace injury and illness, as well as keeping our borders secure. CLEP Test Dates Announced for the St. Croix Campus

A series of College Level Exam Program (CLEP) tests has been scheduled for UVI students on the St. Croix campus. CLEP tests make it possible for students to earn college credits by demonstrating their knowledge in a wide range of subject areas. The cost associated with CLEP is $70 per test. A check or money order should be payable to CLEP. An additional administrative fee of $15, payable to UVI prior to the test date, is also required. A separate check and/or money order must be written for each test. Cash will not be accepted.

UVI Theatre Announces Auditions for Spring Play

The University of the Virgin Islands Theatre has announced the first play of the 2009 season, "Truth on Trial: The Ballad of Sojourner Truth." It will be performed at the Pistarckle Theater April 17, 18, 19, and again on April 24, 25 and 26. Auditions and technical positions are open to all members of the UVI family and the greater Virgin Islands community who are over 18 (or 16 with parental consent). It is possible to earn university credit for participation if desired.

The play requires a multi-cultural cast of nearly thirty, ranging in age from late teen-agers to senior citizens. There are six major roles - three for men and three for women - and many smaller roles. Auditions will be held at two venues on two different days, and by appointment. The first auditions will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 3, in the CA Building on UVI's St. Thomas campus, at noon, 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. The second set of auditions will be held a week later, on Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Pistarckle Theater. Cooks Needed for UVI's 20th Afternoon on the Green

The University of the Virgin Islands is preparing for the annual Afternoon on the Green event, which is scheduled for Sunday, March 8, 2009, on the St. Thomas campus' golf course. This year marks the 20th anniversary of Afternoon on the Green and organizers are planning for it to be the best. The theme is "Have a Roast of a Lime for the 20th Time - Afternoon on the Green 2009."

It is not too early to sign up to participate. Food contributions are needed in these categories: pastries and sweets, soups, native drinks, vegetables/casseroles, main dishes/meats/poultry, seafood, and breads. University Implements Emergency Text Messaging Service

The University of the Virgin Islands has implemented a new text messaging service to provide critical information to students, faculty and staff in the event of a campus emergency. Text messaging is a practical option for quickly and efficiently transmitting vital information. When a safety or security emergency occurs on campus, a text message will be sent immediately to each user who is enrolled in the service, to alert them to the emergency and to provide instructions as to how to proceed.

To participate, students, faculty and staff must sign up to receive critical emergency broadcast communication by registering their email address and cell phone number on-line through their BanWeb account. Open enrollment has been extended until Friday, Feb. 6, 2009.

There is no UVI fee to register for the emergency text message alert system. However, based on an individual's cell phone plan, text messaging fees may apply.

Custom License Plate Initiative Allows UVI Community to Show Support

Students, faculty, staff and alumni of the University of the Virgin Islands have an opportunity to express their loyalty to UVI with the introduction of the UVI Buccaneer License Plate Program, an initiative that allows Virgin Islands vehicle owners to display customized University of the Virgin Islands license plates. Funds raised by the program will support the UVI Athletic Scholarship Fund.

"This is an excellent way to show support for UVI while at the same time benefiting the UVI Athletic Scholarship Fund," UVI Athletic Director Peter Sauer said. Summer Leadership Program Available to Male College Students

The Institute for Responsible Citizenship is accepting applications from male African-American college students for its summer leadership program in Washington, D.C. The Institute provides networking opportunities, leadership development and life-long mentorship. The Institute's goal is to equip young men with the tools required for successful careers in business, education, journalism, law, government, the sciences, public policy, ministry, medicine, public service and the arts. Intermediate Bookkeeping Course Offered by CELL on St. Thomas

UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center will offer a course for individuals interested in brushing up on their bookkeeping skills beginning in February on St. Thomas. The course will cover the financial operations of a business and how to monitor the progress of business financial operations. Participants will also learn about accruals and payments, fixed assets and depreciation, bad and doubtful debt provisisions, and posting salaries. Intermediate Bookkeeping will be held every Tuesday and Wednesday, from Feb. 17 through March 4. All sessions will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the CELL Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus.

Introduction to Bookkeeping Offered by CELL on St. Croix

UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center will offer an Introduction to Bookkeeping course for individuals seeking basic bookkeeping skills in February on St. Croix. Classes are scheduled from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday, from Feb. 17 through March 12 at UVI's CELL Center in Frederiksted. Participants will learn to perform basic bookkeeping functions such as journalizing and posting business transactions, preparing basic financial statements, reconciling bank statements and preparing payroll.
