UVI's Summer Band/Opera Camp to Perform Children's Opera on July 25
The public is invited to the closing program of the UVI Summer Band and Opera Camp which will feature a performance of the children's opera "A Midsummer Night's Dream" at 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 25, at the Reichhold Center for the Arts. Approximately 50 students, ages eight through 18, will present the free program which will also feature performances by instrumental ensembles and the concert band.
Camp participants are from schools on St. Thomas, St. Croix, Antigua and Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands. Campers, under the direction of UVI Professor of Music Austin A. Venzen, have also been presenting free, mid-day public concerts each Wednesday in July at Emancipation Garden, in downtown Charlotte Amalie. The group's final concerts are set for 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on July 22 and 29.
The camp is sponsored in part by the Law Enforcement Planning Commission, the Virgin Islands Department of Human Services, The Prior Family Foundation and the Antigua-Barbuda Association. For more information, contact Prof. Venzen at the UVI Music Office at 693-1192.
PRAXIS Exam to be Administered July 25 on St. Thomas Campus
The PRAXIS Exams will be administered in the Nursing Education Building on UVI's St. Thomas campus at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 25th. Only persons who have registered with ETS will be tested. No walk-ins are allowed. For more information call 693-1462.
VIUCEDD to Offer Fall Course in American Sign Language on St. Thomas
UVI's Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence in Development Disabilities (VIUCEDD) will offer a course on American Sign Language during the 2009 fall semester. The course will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from Aug. 18 through Dec. 8, 2009, on the St. Thomas campus in room 114 of the Teacher Education building. The cost is $130 per student. VIUCEDD to Show 'Praying With Lior' Documentary on July 25
The Virgin Islands Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD) will show the award winning, 2007 film "Praying With Lior" from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 25, in the first-floor conference room of Administration and Conference Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus. "Praying With Lior," a documentary posing the question: Can someone with Down syndrome can be a spiritual genius? Lior, a Jewish boy on his way into manhood, is depicted as a best friend, burden, embarrassment and inspiration, as his faith and disability awe his community. Managers, Assistants Reminded People Admin End User Training Sessions Scheduled for July
UVI managers and designated administrative assistants are reminded to attend mandatory People Admin End User Training Sessions on July 28, and July 31, 2009, on St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses, respectively.
The training is designed to provide participants with the effective use of the system and to familiarize them with the approved and accepted medium to handle all of their employment needs, from creating a position job description to posting a vacancy notice, from setting employees' performance objectives to providing employees' performance feedback.
The People Admin System is a one-stop management vehicle that will increase the overall efficiency, accuracy and accountability at the University.

Alumni Recognition Breakfast on St. Thomas Postponed Until August
A UVI alumni recognition breakfast scheduled for July 18 on St. Thomas has been postponed until early August. The UVI Alumni Association's St. Thomas/St. John Chapter will honor alumni Donnie Dorsett ('00), Dr. Henry Smith ('76), Jean Forde ('85), Winston Smith ('90) and Terrence Thomas ('88) at the event. Breakfast organizers apologize for any inconvenience this change in plans may cause. Tickets for the breakfast - $35 per person - are available at the UVI Bookstore or from chapter officers: Pamela Toussaint, Helen Hart, Michelle Johnson and Chapter President Jackie Sprauve. Proceeds go to the chapter's scholarship fund which supports incoming freshman students at UVI. The continued support of chapter members is greatly appreciated. Chapter President Sprauve said the event promises to be an "exciting trip down memory lane."
Government Health Insurance Rate Increases Expected
UVI employees have been advised to expect rate increases for health insurance coverage by UVI Director of Employee Benefits Veda Richards. In an email message sent to all employees, Richards noted that the annual negotiations between the Government Employees Service Commission, Health Insurance Board of Trustees (GESC), CIGNA HealthCare and MetLife, our life insurance carrier, are on-going. All covered UVI employees are urged to read the detailed information sent via email and posted in departmental offices for employees without easy access to email. Employees should direct questions about insurance rates to Richards at extension 1429 or via email at email@example.com.
Four Current and Former UVI Faculty Collaborate in Publication of Poetry, Art and Prose
Five Virgin Islanders, four of whom have ties to the University of the Virgin Islands, recently published "All This Is Love: A Collection of Virgin Islands Poetry, Art & Prose."
Hilda Lewis Joyce, a retired UVI administrator and business systems professor, Elaine Warren Jacobs, an English teacher and part-time instructor at UVI, Tregenza A. Roach, Esq., UVI alum and adjunct instructor in law and humanities, and Jeanne O'Day, a former UVI English professor, were joined by former newspaper columnist and magazine publisher Daisy Holder Lafond on the project. "All This Is Love" is described as a poignant reminder of the reservoir of artistic talent constantly percolating in the Virgin Islands. The work is motivated by a sincere love of the art of oral elaboration, of telling; guided by a passionate love of traditions, cultures and histories; and sealed and delivered by an even more abiding love for the Virgin Islands and humanity itself.
"All This Is Love" is available from the www.authorhouse.com web site for $17.95 in paperback and $26.95 in hardcover. The book will be available in local bookstores in the near future.
Texas Chili Cook-off Slated Aug. 16 at Brewer's Bay Beach; UVI Participants, Volunteers Sought
The Texas Society of the Virgin Islands' 2009 Chili Cook-off will be held at Brewer's Bay Beach on UVI's St. Thomas Campus on Sunday, Aug. 16. The popular annual event features some of the island's top chili cooks vying for the coveted top prize - a trip as the Virgin Islands representative to the Terlingua International Chili Championship held in November in Terlingua, Texas. Along with the chili tasting, the day features a variety of beach games and musical entertainment by top local groups. Funds raised during the event are donated to local charities. Members of the UVI Community are invited to participate by forming a chili team or working as event volunteers. Those interested should call Patrice Johnson at 693-1058.

Pre-Retirement Workshops set for GERS Participants
Government Employees Retirement System participants interested in information about retirement are invited to Pre-Retirement and Count Down to Retirement Workshops scheduled on St. Thomas and St. Croix.
On St. Thomas the Pre-Retirement Workshops are scheduled for July 8, and Aug. 5. The Count Down to Retirement Workshop is scheduled for Sept. 2. The St. Thomas workshops will be held at the GERS offices on the Waterfront.
On St. Croix the Pre-Retirement Workshops are scheduled for July 15 and Aug. 12, and the Count Down to Retirement Workshop is scheduled for Sept. 9, at the GERS offices in Orange Grove.

Renovation Work Continues on Second Floor of CA Building; Caution Urged
UVI's Physical Plant has announced that renovation work is continuing on the second floor of the Classroom Administration (CA) Building on the St. Thomas campus. Physical Plant personnel will install appropriate barriers and signage in the construction area. All UVI students and University personnel are asked to exercise caution while in the construction area.
CELL to Offer Skills Workshops for First-Line Supervisors in
The University of the Virgin Islands Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center will offer a workshop series titled First-Line Supervision - a certificate program designed to help supervisors develop effective management skills - beginning in August on St. Thomas and St. Croix.
Workshop sessions, which will run on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., begin on Aug. 12. On St. Croix, workshops will be held at the Joseph A. Simpson Building, at #23A Hospital Street, in Frederiksted. On St. Thomas, the workshops will be held at the CELL Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus. First-Line Supervision provides basic management skills and training for supervisors with less than five years of supervisory experience. Participants will learn to: use practical strategies to plan and conduct effective meetings, solve problems, motivate employees, manage people, deal with conflict and handle change in the organization.
The workshops are offered in collaboration with the American Management Association (AMA). Participants may take individual workshops, or complete six of the workshops to obtain a Certificate in Management Skills in the Workplace from the University of the Virgin Islands and the AMA. UVI CELL Offers Course for Spanish Speakers
Spanish-speaking individuals interested in acquiring a basic level of skill in the English language are urged to register for a course to be hosted by the University of the Virgin Islands' Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center in August on St. Croix. English for Spanish Speakers will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting August 4. All sessions will be held at the UVI-CELL Center, located in the Joseph A. Simpson Building in Frederiksted.
The course is designed for Spanish speakers with no prior knowledge of the English language, but would like to acquire a basic level of competence in understanding and speaking in English. Participants will learn to recognize basic English words, use words in the correct context during conversation, hold a basic conversation in English and much more.

UVI CELL Offering 40-Hour Skills Builder Program Beginning in August
A 40-hour Skills Builder Program designed to prepare individuals for employment or promotion exams will be offered on St. Croix and St. Thomas beginning in August by UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center. The program will help individuals enhance reading, writing and math skills and improve their problem solving, critical thinking and test-taking abilities. A 9th grade reading level is a pre-requisite. The program fee of $375 includes registration, instruction and course materials.
On St. Croix, the program will run on Saturdays, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., from Aug. 8, through Oct. 17, at UVI CELL's Frederiksted Office.
On St. Thomas, the program will run on Saturdays, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., from Aug. 15, through Oct. 24, at the CELL Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus.

SBDC Plans Business Outreach Programs for Veterans
UVI's Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will conduct free outreach workshops for veterans on St. Croix on July 13, on St. John on July 14, and on St. Thomas on July 15. Carl Christensen, the Small Business Administration's (SBA) officer in charge will be the presenter. SBA services to be discussed include the Patriot Express Pilot Loan Initiative, the America's Recovery Capital Loan Program and the Community Express Loan Program.
The St. Croix session is scheduled for 2 to 4 p.m. at the SBDC Training Center in Sunshine Mall. The St. John outreach will take place from 10 a.m. to noon in the V.I. Legislature Conference Room in Cruz Bay. The St. Thomas session will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the SBDC Training Facility in Nisky Center.

SBDC Seminars to Provide Answer to 'Employee or Contractor' Question
The Virgin Islands Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will sponsor seminars on St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John designed to help workers and small business owners answer the question: "What Am I, An Independent Contractor Or An Employee?" The seminars will feature presentations from the V.I. Department of Labor, the V.I. Bureau of Internal Revenue, the V.I. Department of Licensing and Consumer Affairs, the U.S. Social Security Administration and Division of Corporations and Trademarks in the Lt. Governor's Office. Answering the "contractor or employee" question makes a difference to both parties.
The St. Croix seminar runs from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 28, at the VI SBDC Training Center at the Sunshine Mall. On St. Thomas the seminar is set for 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29, at the VI SBDC Training Facility at the Nisky Center. The St. John seminar will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 30, at the V.I. Legislature Conference Room in Cruz Bay.
