Today's Business After Hours to Mark 35 Years of Development at UVI
The University of the Virgin Islands' Institutional Advancement component and the St. Croix Chamber of Commerce will host Business After Hours on UVI's St. Croix campus from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. today (Thursday, July 9) in the atrium of the Melvin Evans Center. The public is invited to attend and network with members of the business community as the University showcases some of its most memorable alumni, donors, programs and events.

Reichhold Production of Oliver Samuels' Latest Play Opens Friday on St. Croix, Saturday on St. Thomas
UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts will present Oliver Samuels' latest comedy - "Sheep in Wolf's Clothing" - on St. Croix, at 8 p.m. on Friday, July 10, at Island Center. The play premieres on St. Thomas at the Reichhold Center, with 8 p.m. shows on Saturday, July 11, and Sunday, July 12. Theater goers should prepare for a full evening of laughs with Samuels playing Amos Brown a successful building contractor who has his household turned upside down when his wife decides to take in a foster child. Liburd Coaching Virgin Islands National Volleyball Team in World Championship Qualifier
UVI's Head Men's Volleyball Coach Jason Liburd is coaching the Virgin Islands National Volleyball Team in Puerto Rico, where the team is participating in the third round of the 2010 World Championship qualifying tournament.
The V.I. national team includes four current or former members of the UVI Buccaneers volleyball squad, including Shimoi Vanholten who is the national team captain, Adlah Donastorg III, Brandon Varlack and Alvaro DeLugo. The squad is competing against teams from Puerto Rico, Mexico and Barbados. The tournament's top two finishers will go to Italy in 2010 to play in the final round of the men's Federation internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) World Championship.

Fans can also follow via TV or live web video. Liburd said the matches may be televised on channel 18 on St. Thomas and 19 on St. Croix. UVI Student Crowned Miss St. John Carnival Queen
Congratulations to UVI student Lea Scott who won the 2009 St. John Festival Queen title during a competition on Saturday, June 27. Scott also won trophies for Best Talent and Best International Wear.
Texas Chili Cook-off Slated Aug. 16 at Brewer's Bay Beach; UVI Participants, Volunteers Sought
The Texas Society of the Virgin Islands' 2009 Chili Cook-off will be held at Brewer's Bay Beach on UVI's St. Thomas Campus on Sunday, Aug. 16. The popular annual event features some of the island's top chili cooks vying for the coveted top prize - a trip as the Virgin Islands representative to the Terlingua International Chili Championship held in November in Terlingua, Texas. Along with the chili tasting, the day features a variety of beach games and musical entertainment by top local groups. Funds raised during the event are donated to local charities. Members of the UVI Community are invited to participate by forming a chili team or working as event volunteers. Those interested should call Patrice Johnson at 693-1058.

UVI Placement Tests Set Friday, July 10, on St. Thomas and St. Croix Campuses
UVI's Math and English placement testing will take place on Friday, July 10, on UVI's St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses.

Placement tests are also scheduled for Aug. 10, on both campuses.
Graduate applicants are not required to take the placement tests. Students who received less than 24 transfer credits will be notified if they are required to take the placement exam on their transfer evaluations. Incoming freshman (i.e. students with no prior college credit, less than 12 college credits with no college-level English or Math credits, or no Math and/or English AP scores of three or higher) are required to take the placement tests. Students who have earned the following SAT or ACT scores are not required to take the Placement Test: SAT Math - 490; SAT Reading Comprehension - 500; ACT Math - 20; and ACT English - 21.

UVI's Fall Semester Classes to Begin Aug. 17
UVI's Fall Semester classes are scheduled to begin on Aug. 17, 2009.
Returning Students: Fall Semester registration - online or in person - for returning students is available now through Aug. 7, 2009. Students must confer with advisors to receive information on their academic plans and to obtain PIN numbers needed for registration. New and Transfer Students: Orientation for new and transfer students is scheduled to begin the week of Aug. 9. Advisement and registration for new students for the Fall Semester are scheduled for Aug. 12. Advisement and late registration are set for Aug. 13 and 14. UVI Process Technology Program Summer Employment/Internship Program Begins
The University of the Virgin Islands has obtained funding from several sources that will provide employment opportunities this summer for 21 Process Technology students at the HOVENSA Refinery. Six UVI students have been offered internships by HOVENSA LLC, which is a requirement for obtaining their associates degree in Process Technology at the end of the Fall Semester 2009. The June issue focuses on VI Small Business Week, during which local businesses were featured and awarded. The article contains a list of the 2009 award recipients of the UVI Small Business Development Center and the US Small Business Administration. Other articles feature UVI professor Dr. Nasseer Idrisi who will spend months conducting research in the Pacific Ocean and the upcoming television series 'Home Grown' - a partnership between UVI, WTJX and the VI Agriculture Department.
Pre-Retirement Workshops set for GERS Participants
Government Employees Retirement System participants interested in information about retirement are invited to Pre-Retirement and Count Down to Retirement Workshops scheduled on St. Thomas and St. Croix.
On St. Thomas the Pre-Retirement Workshops are scheduled for July 8, and Aug. 5. The Count Down to Retirement Workshop is scheduled for Sept. 2. The St. Thomas workshops will be held at the GERS offices on the Waterfront.
On St. Croix the Pre-Retirement Workshops are scheduled for July 15 and Aug. 12, and the Count Down to Retirement Workshop is scheduled for Sept. 9, at the GERS offices in Orange Grove.

UVI Summer Band/Opera Camp Plans Weekly Public Concerts During July
UVI's annual Summer Band and Opera Camp, co-hosted by the V.I.'s Law Enforcement Planning Commission and the University, will present a series of free, public concerts on St. Thomas each Wednesday during July. Junior and senior high school students from St. Thomas, St. Croix, Antigua and Virgin Gorda are expected to participate, according to Prof. Austin A. Venzen, camp director and professor of music at UVI.
The group's concerts are scheduled each Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. beginning July, 1 in Emancipation Garden, in downtown Charlotte Amalie. Venzen said the group is also committed to attending and performing at Sunday services at various churches on St. Thomas. Campers will also attend a special benefit concert to be performed by Prof. Venzen's son, Dr. DeWayne T. Venzen, at 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 5, at Christchurch Methodist Church. Dr. Venzen is a trumpeter and member of the U.S. Army's Fife & Drum Corps. He will also teach a special session during the camp.

Space is still available for students who wish to register for the camp's band and opera sections. The camp's band segment is open to students in grades seven through 12. The opera segment is for students in grades five through 12. Camp costs $300 (lunches are included) and there is a $50 registration fee. Camp sessions begin on Wednesday, June 24. Classes, which will take place in the UVI Music Building, will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays, through July 31. Renovation Work Continues on Second Floor of CA Building; Caution Urged
UVI's Physical Plant has announced that renovation work is continuing on the second floor of the Classroom Administration (CA) Building on the St. Thomas campus. Physical Plant personnel will install appropriate barriers and signage in the construction area. All UVI students and University personnel are asked to exercise caution while in the construction area.
UVI's Eastern Caribbean Center Conducting 2009 V.I. Community Survey
The Eastern Caribbean Center of the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) will conduct the 2009 Virgin Islands Community Survey (VICS) during the months of April through July. This scientific survey of a sample of households is a follow-up to the one conducted in 2008 that collected information similar to that gathered in the census of 2000. SBDC Plans Business Outreach Programs for Veterans
UVI's Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will conduct free outreach workshops for veterans on St. Croix on July 13, on St. John on July 14, and on St. Thomas on July 15. Carl Christensen, the Small Business Administration's (SBA) officer in charge will be the presenter. SBA services to be discussed include the Patriot Express Pilot Loan Initiative, the America's Recovery Capital Loan Program and the Community Express Loan Program.
The St. Croix session is scheduled for 2 to 4 p.m. at the SBDC Training Center in Sunshine Mall. The St. John outreach will take place from 10 a.m. to noon in the V.I. Legislature Conference Room in Cruz Bay. The St. Thomas session will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the SBDC Training Facility in Nisky Center.
