UVI Board of Trustees to Meet June 13 on St. Thomas Campus

The University of the Virgin Islands Board of Trustees will hold a regular meeting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 13, in the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. The meeting will convene with regular session agenda items. President LaVerne E. Ragster will give the President's Report, followed by Chairman's Comments from Board Chairman Alexander A. Moorhead. This will be Dr. Ragster's final Board meeting as UVI's president. Following the Chairman's Comments, the Board will consider the agenda items that require action. Mangrove Coalition Selected as Coastal Zone Organization of the Year

The Virgin Islands Mangrove Research and Conservation Coalition (VIMRCC) has been selected the Coastal Zone Organization of the Year by the Coastal Zone Management Program of the Virgin Islands Department of Planning and Natural Resources. VIMRCC is also the recipient of the 2008 VI Coastal Zone Management Program Awareness Award, which honors and recognizes individuals or organizations for their dedication and contribution to helping manage, enhance and protect the territory's coastal and ocean resources.

The coalition originated from a project awarded to Dr. Nasseer Idrisi at UVI's Center for Marine and Environmental Studies in 2006. UVI graduate student Sophia McKenzie, the VIMRCC project director, will receive the awards from DPNR on St. Croix on June 26, 2009, on behalf of the coalition. UVI's Ag Experiment Station to Host 11th Aquaponics and Tilaipia Course

The Aquaculture Program of UVI's Agricultural Experiment Station will host the 11th annual International Aquaponics and Tilapia Aquaculture Course on the St. Croix campus from June 14 to 20, 2009. Fifty-eight course participants will attend. They will learn the principles and practices of the two aquaculture systems - Aquaponics and Biofloc - that have been designed by the Aquaculture Program.

The participants come from around the world, including South Africa, Australia, Denmark, Mexico, Canada and the USA. Eight Virgin Islanders are attending and eight others from the Caribbean region. The UVI community is asked to welcome these visitors to the St. Croix campus when meeting them in the residence hall, cafeteria or other venues around the island. Reichhold to Host Oliver Samuels Play on St. Croix, St. Thomas

Oliver Samuels returns to the Virgin Islands in July with his hilarious new comedy "Sheep in Wolf's Clothing."

UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts will present "Sheep in Wolf's Clothing" on St. Croix, at 8 p.m. on Friday, July 10, at Island Center. The play will premiere on St. Thomas at the Reichhold Center, with 8 p.m. shows on Saturday, July 11, and Sunday, July 12.

People Admin End User Training Sessions Scheduled for July

UVI managers and designated administrative assistants are invited to attend mandatory People Admin End User Training Sessions on July 28, and July 31, 2009, on St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses, respectively.

The training is designed to provide participants with the effective use of the system and to familiarize them with the approved and accepted medium to handle all of their employment needs, from creating a position job description to posting a vacancy notice, from setting employees' performance objectives to providing employees' performance feedback.

The People Admin System is a one-stop management vehicle that will increase the overall efficiency, accuracy and accountability at the University.

Renovation Work Begun on Second Floor of CA Building; Caution Urged

UVI's Physical Plant has announced that renovation work has begun on the second floor of the Classroom Administration (CA) Building on the St. Thomas campus. Physical Plant personnel will install appropriate barriers and signage in the construction area. All UVI students and University personnel are asked to exercise caution while in the construction area.

Student, Faculty and Staff Discounts Available for UVI's Multi-Sport Skills Youth Clinics

UVI students, faculty and staff with children planning to enroll in the University's 2009 Multi-Sport Skills Summer Clinics are entitled to a five percent discount on clinic rates. Three, two-week clinics - basketball starts June 22, volleyball starts July 6 and soccer starts July 20 - are being offered for boys and girls ages nine through 18. Clinic sessions run Mondays through Fridays, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at UVI's Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus.

The clinics are designed to create an environment conducive to learning, sportsmanship and teamwork for Virgin Islands youth. They will promote increased skill levels among young athletes, increasing their opportunities for college scholarships. They also help to raise funds for the UVI Student Athlete Scholarship Program.

Clinic costs are $200 for those who sign up for one sport, $375 for two sports and $550 for all three sports. After-clinic care, if pre-arranged, is available from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the rate of $25 per week. Walk-in registration is on-going at the UVI Athletics Office in the Sports and Fitness Center daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Call 693-1199 or 693-1228 for details. New Hires, Promotions List for May Posted to 'Inside UVI'

UVI's Human Resources Office has released the New Hires, Promotions, Change in Titles & Separations list for the period of May 1 through May 31, 2009. The list is available from the "Inside UVI" area of the UVI web site - www.uvi.edu. Members of the UVI faculty and staff accessing "Inside UVI" for the first time should use their network system login name and the initial password "welcomeUVI." Following that, they will be prompted to make a new, permanent password. When the new password is accepted, select the "Staff Home" or "Faculty Home" link in the list of links on the left side of the page.

VI Writing Project Joins the Nation in Teaching Writing

The Virgin Islands Writing Project (VIWP), a partnership between the National Writing Project (NWP), the Virgin Islands Department of Education, and the University of the Virgin Islands, will conduct its seventh annual Summer Institute from June 22 to July 17, on UVI's St. Croix campus. Fourteen public school teachers from throughout the territory will participate in the Summer Institute, and have begun working with their coaches preparing projects assigned during a pre-institute retreat. St. Croix Campus Business Services to Close June 17 for Staff Training

The Business Services Office on UVI's St. Croix campus will be closed on June 17, 2009, to allow the staff to attend a cross-functional training workshop in the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. Summer Bridge 2 Calculus Program Offered for College-Bound Students on St. Thomas

UVI's Division of Science and Mathematics will conduct a six-week Summer Bridge 2 Calculus program on the St. Thomas campus, with daily sessions from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., from June 22 to July 31. There is no cost to participants and lunch is provided. High school students who have completed grade 12 or students who are already attending UVI who have successfully completed the MAT 024 course are eligible to apply.

The Summer Bridge2Calculus program is designed to enhance the mathematics preparedness of college-bound students who are interested in pursuing careers in science, mathematics, engineering, technology or medicine. It will prepare students to enroll in the introductory calculus course and provide a foundation for success in that important course. Through this experience, students will gain confidence in tackling new problems, thus moving from a level of knowledge and comprehension to a level of application and analysis. This will strengthen the student's ability to succeed in a strongly quantitative science curriculum. Field trips will enhance connections to biology, chemistry, physics and the environment. Participants who complete the Summer Bridge 2 Calculus program will receive a certificate of completion and a book scholarship worth $500 if they are attending UVI in the fall of 2009.

Honors Mathematics Workshop Offered for College-Bound Students on St. Croix

UVI's Division of Science and Mathematics will conduct a two-week Honors Mathematics Workshop on the St. Croix campus, with daily sessions from 9 a.m. to noon, from July 6 to July 17. There is no cost to participants. High school students leaving grades 9, 10, 11 or 12 are eligible to apply.

The workshop is designed to enhance the mathematics preparedness of college-bound students who are interested in pursuing careers in science, mathematics, engineering or technology. It will focus on computational science and mathematical explorations in scientific contexts, with the goal of helping students to understand how mathematics is used in science. Through this workshop, students will gain confidence in tackling new problems, thus moving from a level of knowledge and comprehension to a level of application and analysis. This will strengthen the students' ability to succeed in a strongly quantitative science curriculum. Field trips will enhance connections to biology, chemistry, physics and the environment. Participants who complete the Math Honors Workshop will receive a certificate of completion and a book scholarship worth $150.

Fall Semester Orientation Schedules Posted to UVI Web Site

UVI's 2009 Fall Semester Orientation for new and transfer students is scheduled to begin the week of Aug. 9. Complete orientation schedules for both campuses and important information on UVI policies regarding placement exams and student rights are now available from the Admissions section of the UVI web site - www.uvi.edu. Summer Session II, Fall Semester Registration

  • Registration for UVI's 2009 Summer Session II is continuing. Summer Session class schedules are available from the Academics section of the UVI web - www.uvi.edu. They are also available from this direct link. Final registration for Summer Session II classes is set for June 25 and classes run from June 26 through July 31.
  • Registration for the 2009 Fall Semester is available now through Aug. 7, 2009. Returning students will be able to register online and in person for the fall 2009 semester. Students are reminded that they must confer with advisors to receive information on their academic plan and to obtain pin numbers that provide access to registration. Fall Semester Class schedules are available from the Academics/Class Schedules link on the UVI home page: www.uvi.edu - or from this direct link. Advisement and registration for new students for the Fall Semester are scheduled for Aug. 12. Advisement and late registration are set for Aug. 13 and 14. Fall Semester classes will begin on Aug. 17.

UVI Offers Financial Assistance to Summer Session Students

Individuals who are registered, or who are planning to register, for 2009 Summer Session classes at the University of the Virgin Islands are invited to visit the University's Financial Aid Offices to determine if they are eligible for financial aid or direct loans. Prospective students can visit the Financial Aid Offices - in the Administration and Conference Center on St. Thomas and in the Evans Center on St. Croix - to begin processing aid requests. UVI Employees Can Order Stationery Online

UVI faculty and employees may now order official UVI stationery from a new, web-based ordering system available from a link on the Inside UVI section of the UVI web site www.uvi.edu.

The new stationery link makes it possible to order business cards and letterhead online. The listed prices include shipping. Once submitted, your order, with the invoice, will arrive in about 10 business days.

After logging in to INSIDE UVI*:

  • Click on the Stationery/Letterhead tab, at left, above the small photo.
  • Click on ONLINE ORDERS link, which takes you to a screen that says: PLEASE IDENTIFY YOURSELF. Please fill in all required fields in the First Time Customer area.
  • Once you log in, you'll be taken to a screen that allows you to choose what you want to order under PRODUCTS.
  • Select a style by clicking CHOOSE A TEMPLATE.
  • Select CREATE NEW and fill in the blanks. After that, follow the shopping cart instructions.

UVI's Eastern Caribbean Center Conducting 2009 V.I. Community Survey

The Eastern Caribbean Center of the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) will conduct the 2009 Virgin Islands Community Survey (VICS) during the months of April through July. This scientific survey of a sample of households is a follow-up to the one conducted in 2008 that collected information similar to that gathered in the census of 2000. Small Business Workshop Series Scheduled in June on St. Thomas and St. Croix

The Virgin Island Small Business Development Center, in collaboration with the Georgia Small Business Development Center, will present the Virgin Islands community with a series of small business workshops from June 15 to 19. The workshops - titled "Improving Cash Flow," "Managing by the Numbers" and "Intermediate QuickBooks" - will be available on both St. Thomas and St. Croix.

Improving Cash Flow and Boosting Profits will be presented from 6 to 8 p.m. on June 15, on St. Thomas with a video conference link to St. Croix. Presenter David Lewis, from the Georgia SBDC, will explain how business owners can gain financial control of their businesses by understanding the differences between profits and cash flow. Since many small businesses operate with small or no cash reserves, they are vulnerable to fluctuations in the timing of cash inflows and outflows. This workshop will examine the path cash takes as it flows through a business and offer strategies to improve a business' cash position and financial stability. It also examines time proven techniques for adding more profit to the bottom line. The workshop costs $40 per person. UVI students, staff and faculty, with I.D., may attend the seminar at no charge; however, pre-registration is required.

Managing by the Numbers will be presented on June 16, on St. Thomas, and June 17, on St. Croix. Sessions will be offered from 6 to 8 p.m. in both locations. The workshop will introduce participants to the various cash flow management techniques necessary to plan and manage the cash flow challenges of their businesses. Participants will gain an understanding of basic financial statements through examples and case studies. Georgia SBDC instructor Lynn Voss will focus on the critical information available from income statements, cash flow statements and balance sheets. Participants will learn to create and analyze ratios using historical data and industry information, and learn techniques to preserve their cash. The workshop costs $40 per person. UVI students, staff and faculty, with I.D., may attend the seminar at no charge; however, pre-registration is required.

Intermediate QuickBooks are scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on June 18, on St. Croix, and June 19, on St. Thomas. Georgia SBDC presenter Robert Andoh will provide participants with the ability to track and manage business finances, while deepening their QuickBooks knowledge and skills. The cost for the QuickBooks workshops is $100 per person (including lunch).

All workshops in St. Thomas will be held at the SBDC Training Facility at Nisky Center. St. Croix workshop sessions will be held at the SBDC Training Center at Sunshine Mall in Frederiksted, except for the QuickBooks Workshop, which will take place on UVI's St. Croix campus in room 131 of the North West Wing.
