Seventh Annual Spring Research Symposium

The St. Croix Community is invited to attend the Seventh Annual Spring Research Symposium sponsored by the Emerging Caribbean Scientists program (ECS) of the Division of Science and Mathematics at the University of the Virgin Islands. The two-hour special event will take place on Saturday, March 28, 2009 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. in the UVI Northwest Wing of the Great Hall. Miss CYFAR 2009 Competition Scheduled

Five young ladies ages 6 to 9 will participate in the Miss CYFAR 2009 competition scheduled for 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 4, at Gladys Abraham Elementary School on St. Thomas. The contestants are Majestik F. Estrada Petersen, Francier Baker, K' Nyzha K. Henry, Francielli Baker and Adajah Y. Benjamin. All are participants in UVI's Children, Youth and Families At Risk (CYFAR) program, an after school program administered by the Cooperative Extension Service.

Music Area Student Recital

Alumna Gloria Josiah Publishes Book of Memoirs

UVI Alumna Gloria Josiah ('96) has published Ministry Adventures in the Caribbean, an inspirational memoir covering the rigors and rewards of ministerial family life in the Caribbean. In the book Mrs. Josiah recalls her adventures at the University of the West Indies while pursuing a degree in mathematics and economics, as well as her experiences at UVI. Career Exploration Week - March 30 Thru April 3

The UVI Counseling & Career Services Office presents "Tools for a Better Tomorrow," Annual Career Exploration Week. The week's activities begin at 11:30 a.m. each day, with the official Opening on Monday, March 30, in the Cafetorium. On Tuesday there will be resume & interviewing skills workshop and on Wednesday, the Career Fair will take place in the Melvin Evans Center from 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. On Thursday, April 2 at 11:30 a.m. there will be a Dress 4 Success function and on Friday at 11:30 a.m. a panel discussion on "Financing College" will be followed by a 50/50 raffle drawing in the Cafetorium.

SBDC -Seminars on Women in Business and Taxes

The UVI Small Business Development Center offers two remaining lectures in March -- Wednesday, March 25 a "Women in Business Forum," from 6 .m. to 8 p.m. in the SBDC Training Facility at Nisky Center and March 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. "Preparing Your 2008 Business Tax Returns." Charter Month Ceremonies Continue on Both Campuses

Numerous Charter Month activities will continue throughout March. Both campus libraries are featuring Charter Day library displays. Most activities will be videoconferenced between the campuses. UVI Participating in 2009 Your First College Year (YFCY) Survey

UVI's Office of Institutional Research and Planning has announced that the University is participating in a national study of first-year college students. The 2009 Your First College Year (YFCY) Survey is being conducted by the Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA. The survey is designed to allow students to relate their experiences during their first year of college. It covers many issues that examine the impact of college on a student's life.

Information generated by the survey will help UVI to evaluate how students adjust to college and the associated academic experiences and achievements. It will also seek information about how extracurricular activities and experiences with campus programs - such as orientation and honors courses - affect new students and how students have changed since entering college.

Participation by students will help UVI to understand which areas need attention and which areas are successful, with the overall goal of improving the college experience for students.

The YFCY survey opens this week with a pre-survey announcement via the Blackboard course delivery system. Students will receive email invitations from UVI President Dr. LaVerne E. Ragster via the YourFirstCollegeYear@datarecognitioncorp.com. Emails inviting students to participate will continue through April 10. Parent Empowerment Workshop and Support Group Set for March 25

HUGS, Inc. will conduct a parent empowerment workshop and support group for any parent of a child with disability in the St.Thomas/St. John school district on Wednesday, March 25, at the Sugar Estate Head Start office on First Street in Charlotte Amalie. This effort will be co-sponsored by the Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence on Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD). The first part of the workshop will feature a supervisor of special education discuss parental rights and other issues like transition and the need for more parental involvement. The workshop's second part will offer an exercise related to emotional support for parents with special needs children. The workshop will run from 6 to 8 p.m. Dinner and babysitting will be provided. Student Employee Appreciation Nominations Sought on St. Thomas

UVI's Student Employment Office on the St. Thomas campus is seeking nominations for this years' Student Employee Appreciation Ceremony which will be held on April 15 during the annual Student Employment Appreciation Week. The awards - for the student employee of the year and a variety of "Lighter Side" awards - are designed to show the University's appreciation for the invaluable services provided by student workers. UVI employees who work with student workers are eligible to make nominations. Details of the process, nomination criteria, a complete list of the awards and nomination forms have been provided, via email, to St. Thomas campus employees. UVI Carnival Mass Camp to Open March 25

The UVI Carnival Committee has announced that the official opening of Mass Camp is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 25, in the old Financial Aid Office - in the building below the Music Suite. Camp will be open from 2 to 9 p.m. daily on Wednesdays through Fridays. The temporary phone number is 693-1280.

The committee is also seeking assistance from the UVI Community in preparing its carnival entry based on its green theme: Let Our Energies Combine for Carnival 2009. Items needed include old LP records, 45 records, old CDs or DVD, paper towel bases, wire hangers and shower liners. Items can be dropped off at the Student Activities Center on St. Croix and at the Mas Camp and the Administration and Conference Center on St. Thomas.

The committee also needs individuals who can assist with sewing, wire bending, cutting, gluing, spraying, tea dying or simply lending a hand here with the effort. Costume making workshops will begin next week.

Members of the UVI Carnival Committee plan to host a troupe registration table at the Miss UVI Ambassadorial Pageant scheduled for March 28 on St. Croix. Information is also available from UVI Student Activities Offices at 693-1111 on St. Thomas or 692-4228 on St. Croix.

Kayaking Available on Fridays for UVI Students, Faculty and Staff

The UVI Intramural Department is hosting a series of kayaking events from 3 p.m. to dark on Fridays until April 3. Single and double person kayaks will be available (in addition to paddles, life jackets, etc.) for any interested UVI students, staff or faculty. This service is provided at no charge but is available at a first-come, first-served basis. This is a chance to learn a new water activity, get fit and have fun. Kayaking will begin at the MacLean Marine Science dock on the St. Thomas campus. For more information contact Prof. Heikkila at 693-1213.

UVI Concert Choir to Present Spring Concert on April 11

The UVI Concert Choir, under the direction of UVI Music Professor Dr. Lorna Young-Wright, will present a Spring Concert at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 11, at the Nisky Moravian Church. The performance will include student conductor Nadja Skeete and student accompanists Darryl Williams, Lystra Edwards and Lynesha Sweeney. Vocal soloist are Eugenia Chapman, Christalia Mark, Ledell Mulraine and Jessica Williams.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for students. They may be purchased at the door, from choir members or from the UVI Humanities office.

CELL Provides Hands-On Computer Skills program

A nationally recognized computer certification program will once again be offered by the University of the Virgin Islands' Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center. The International Computer Driving License (ICDL) Program is a globally recognized training and certification program that allows individuals to become proficient in the use of information technology. It is recognized in more than 100 countries as the standard for certification of basic computer skills.

The seven-week program is slated to begin on Monday, March 30, 2009. Sessions will be held 6-9 pm Mondays through Wednesdays at the UVICELL Center on the St. Thomas campus.

ICDL focuses on developing basic computer skills in seven key areas: Basic Concepts of Information Technology, File Management, Word Processing, Spreadsheets, Database, Presentations, Communication and Information. Candidates who successfully complete all seven modules and pass the certification exams will receive an ICDL Certification card which serves as an achievement of fundamental knowledge in all seven computer skill areas.

Basic Computing Course to be Held on St. Thomas

The University of the Virgin Islands' Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center is currently conducting registration for its upcoming Basic Computing course. Classes will be held 1-4 pm every Monday starting March 30, 2009. All sessions will be held at the UVICELL Center on the St. Thomas Campus.

The course is designed for individuals interested in learning the basics of using a computer.

Participants will learn the essentials of computing such as working with windows, using the internet, emailing, safe computing and much more. The information will be presented in an easy to understand format and includes hands-on exercises.

CELL to Offer Customer Service Excellence Course on April 2

To enhance the level of services provided to visitors of the USVI, the University of the Virgin Islands - Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center is embarking on a program that is designed to ensure customer satisfaction so that tourists will be more likely to return to our shores. Customer Service Excellence for the Hospitality Industry will be held 6-8 pm every Thursday evening starting April 2, 2009. All sessions will be held at the UVICELL Center on the St. Thomas campus.

Participants will learn tips and strategies to effectively increase customer satisfaction and gain repeat business. Topics will include: how to create a memorable experience for customers, getting problems revolved quickly and courteously, handling stressful calls, telephone etiquette and much more.

HR Promotes Online Position Management and Applicant Tracking System

UVI's Human Resources Department has announced that the University's new online service designed to increase overall efficiency, accuracy and accountability in position management and applicant tracking is now available to UVI employees and to individuals seeking employment opportunities.

To access the PeopleAdmin web-based system click on this URL: https://careers.uvi.edu/hr or enter the URL address into browser. The system allows the preparation of personnel requisitions, employee job descriptions and temporary appointments. Hiring managers and members of UVI search committees can now review applicants online and/or print the application at their leisure and more. To activate your user account, please enter your Employee Pin # 9000; reenter the same number for the password. The system will prompt you to change the password. Upon completion of that process, the system will submit your request to HR for review and approval.

UVI Registration for 2009 Fall Semester to Open on April 6

The University of the Virgin Islands has rescheduled early registration for the 2009 Fall Semester due to pending changes in the fall class schedule. Beginning April 6 and continuing through August 7, 2009, students will be able to register online and in person for the fall 2009 semester. Students are reminded that they must see their advisor to receive information on their academic plan and to obtain their pin numbers for access to registration. New student advisement and registration for the fall semester are scheduled for August 12. Advisement and late registration are set for August 13 and 14. Fall Semester classes will begin on August 17.

VI-EPSCoR Issues Request for Incubator Grant Proposals for 2009

The Virgin Islands Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) has announced its 2009 request for incubator grant proposals. VI-EPSCoR Incubator Grants support researchers in exploring new research directions related to the project thrust on Integrated Caribbean Coastal Ecosystems (ICCE). Goals of the 2009 Incubator Grants Program are to Stimulate research of priority to the ICCE research thrust, stimulate research collaborations in order to build strong interdisciplinary research team, and to provide student research opportunities.

Potential applicants are encouraged to attend one of the upcoming brownbag lunch meetings where VI-EPSCoR staff will be available to answer questions. The first will be held at noon on March 25 in room 200 of the McLean Marine Science Center. Videoconferencing and teleconferencing will be available upon request. CLEP Test Dates for the St. Croix Campus; Next Signup Deadline March 27

A series of College Level Exam Program (CLEP) tests has been scheduled for UVI students on the St. Croix campus. CLEP tests make it possible for students to earn college credits by demonstrating their knowledge in a wide range of subject areas. Students may register at the Access and Enrollment Services Office in room 811 of the Evans Center. Testing begins promptly at 8:30 a.m. on each test date. Latecomers will not be allowed to take the test.

The cost associated with CLEP is $70 per test. Checks or money orders should be made payable to CLEP. An additional administrative fee of $15, payable to UVI prior to the test date, is also required. A separate check and/or money order must be written for each test. Cash will not be accepted.

UVI Service Awards to be Presented April 16-17; EOY Nominations Due March 27

The University of the Virgin Islands' 35th Annual Service Awards ceremonies are scheduled for Thursday, April 16, and Friday, April 17, on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses, respectively. The theme for this year's ceremonies is "UVI Poised for Change." Employees reaching significant service milestones and employees of the year from each campus will be recognized during these ceremonies. UVI employees of the year will also be recognized at the Annual Public Awards Programs administered by the Virgin Islands Division of Personnel.

UVI's Human Resources Department has announced that nominations for Employees of the Year (EOY) are due by March 27, 2009. Miss UVI Competition Scheduled for March 28 on St. Croix

The Miss UVI Ambassadorial Competition for 2009-2010 will be held on the University's St. Croix campus at 8 p.m. on March 28 at the St. Croix Educational Comples. The pageant's theme is "Charting the Course to Excellence." Competitors are JaeDee Caines, Carice Glasgow and Christina Clement. Caines is a communications major on the St. Thomas campus. Glasgow is a computer science major on the St. Croix campus. Clement is a biology major on the St. Croix campus. Tickets are $15 and are available from the UVI Bookstores on both campuses, Urban Threadz and Alliance Clothing. April 5 Luncheon Planned to Help Fund King Museum at UVI

Ms. Lillia E. King, daughter of the late Gov. and Mrs. Cyril E. King, invites the UVI community to attend a luncheon on St. Thomas at Marriott's Frenchman's Reef Beach Resort in honor of her parents. The luncheon will take place on Sunday, April 5. Proceeds from the luncheon will be used to create a museum at UVI dedicated to the memory of Gov. King, the second elected governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands, and his wife, First Lady Agnes A. Schuster-King.

Reichhold Gallery Featuring New Sculpture by Edney Freeman

The Virgin Islands public is invited to visit UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts gallery which is featuring new work by sculptor and St. Thomas-St. John 2008 Teacher of the Year Edney Freeman. Freeman's exhibit is titled "Lest We Forget: Cast in Bondage Slave Hire Tags" is on display at the gallery in the Reichhold Center's lobby through March 31. Freeman teaches art at Charlotte Amalie High School. Access to the lobby is available during show intermissions and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Mondays through Fridays.

The Caribbean Writer Is Seeking Cover and Inside Art for Volume 23

The Caribbean Writer, an international, literary anthology published by University of the Virgin Islands, is seeking colorful, eye-catching, Caribbean scenes for possible use on the cover of its upcoming issue, Volume 23. Artwork in a vertical format is required and work should be submitted in the TIF or JPEG file formats.

Black and white art (line drawings, sketches, block prints, etc.) is also needed for use inside the 300-page publication. Artwork in both vertical and horizontal formats is acceptable for inside use. It should also be submitted in the TIF or JPEG file formats.

Custom License Plate Initiative Allows UVI Community to Show Support

Students, faculty, staff and alumni of the University of the Virgin Islands have an opportunity to express their loyalty to UVI with the introduction of the UVI Buccaneer License Plate Program, an initiative that allows Virgin Islands vehicle owners to display customized University of the Virgin Islands license plates. Funds raised by the program will support the UVI Athletic Scholarship Fund.

"This is an excellent way to show support for UVI while at the same time benefiting the UVI Athletic Scholarship Fund," UVI Athletic Director Peter Sauer said.
