UVI to Close Nov. 26-27 for Thanksgiving Day, Fortsberg Day
The University of the Virgin Islands will be closed on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 26 and 27, in observance of Thanksgiving Day and Fortsberg/Discovery Day, respectively. UVI classes will resume and administrative offices will open on their regular schedules on Monday, Nov. 30.
UVI Libraries to be Open for Saturday, Sunday Access
UVI's libraries will also be closed in observance of Thanksgiving Day and Fortsberg/Discovery Day on Nov. 26 and Nov. 27, respectively. The libraries will be open on their regular schedules on Saturday, Nov. 28 (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and Sunday, Nov. 29 (1 p.m. to 8 p.m.).
During the holiday period, students will have access to the 24/7 computer lab on St. Thomas and the NWW 120 computer lab on St. Croix. Students may also access online library resources at any time by going to http://library.uvi.edu. The Help Desk voice mail at ext.1466 and email will be monitored during the holiday.
Paradise Jam Notes...
Bucs Down Metropolitan 73-70 in First Paradise Jam Appearance
UVI's Buccaneers men's basketball team defeated LAI league rivals Metropolitan in a thriller of a pre-season match-up Saturday, Nov. 21, during the 2009 Paradise Jam basketball tournament. The Bucs trailed by seven at the half, but fought back in the second half, cheered on by a home crowd estimated at over 2,000. Alvaro DeLugo delivered the game-winning, three-point shot with only two seconds on the clock.
The Bucs' regular season begins the first week of February 2010. Prior to that, they will play two more pre-season contests in Puerto Rico and one at home. The home game will pit the current Bucs squad against a team composed of past UVI players. That game is scheduled for the last weekend in January.
Tennessee Faces Purdue in Paradise Jam 2009 Men's Championship Today
The 2009 Paradise Jam Basketball Tournament continues today (Monday, Nov. 23) with championship round action beginning at 2 p.m. in UVI's Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus. Four games are on the schedule, with the University of Tennessee Volunteers taking on the Purdue University Boilermakers for the Paradise Jam crown at 9:30 p.m. The contest for third-place, between DePaul and St. Joseph's, begins at 7 p.m. Both games will be televised nationally on Fox College Sports (check local listings). A video featuring a UVI campus tour will be featured during the TV coverage. Streaming coverage of Paradise Jam games is also available via the Fox Sports net channel. Paradise Jam Women's Round Games Set Nov. 26-28
The women's division of Paradise Jam 2009 runs from Thursday, Nov. 26, through Saturday, Nov. 28, with four games each day. The women's field, in two divisions, includes Notre Dame, Oklahoma, San Diego State, South Carolina, Mississippi State, Rutgers, Southern California and Texas.
Paradise Jam tickets are $15 for V.I. adults (with local ID), $10 for V.I. senior citizens (65+), and $5 for UVI students and V.I. children (ages 5 to 18). Non-V.I. resident tickets are $45.
UVI to Host Planetarium Shows Nov. 24 and Dec. 1 at the Reichhold Center
As it marks the end of the International Year of Astronomy celebration, the Physics and Astronomy Program in UVI's Division of Science and Mathematics will host free planetarium shows for the University community on Tuesday, Nov. 24, and Thursday, Dec. 1, at the Reichhold Center for the Arts on the St. Thomas campus.
The shows will be lead by Assistant Professor of Physics and Astronomy Cynthia Gómez Martín, with astronomy and physics students making the presentations. The students have been trained in the usage of the STARLAB traveling planetarium, and have been preparing their presentations over the last month. UVI Financial Aid/Scholarship Students Advised to Visit Cashier's Offices
Returning UVI students who have received financial aid or scholarships, and who have registered for the spring 2010 semester, can now visit Cashier's Offices on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses to pay for classes. Failure to do so will result in classes being cancelled. Students must contact the Cashier's Offices in person to have their awards credited to their accounts. Special Meeting of UVI Staff Council Set Nov. 24
A special meeting of the UVI Staff Council will be held at noon, on Tuesday, Nov. 24, Business Building Room 110 on the St. Thomas campus and in Evans Center Room 713 on the St. Croix campus. UVI Faculty Recital Scheduled Nov. 29 at Nisky Moravian Church
Magda Lupeschi, coloratura soprano, and Lorna Young-Wright, pianist, will present a UVI faculty recital at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 29, at the Nisky Moravian Church on St. Thomas. The program includes works by Mozart, Dvorák, Rimsky-Korsakov, Granados, Handel, Verdi and Puccini. The pair will also present a song cycle composed by Young-Wright. Mandatory Meeting for UVI Agriculture and Food Fair Participants Set for Dec. 1
Members of the UVI family are reminded that now is the time to plan their involvement in the V.I. Agriculture and Food Fair which is scheduled for Feb. 13 to 15, 2010, on St. Croix.
All UVI program entities wishing to participate must send a representative to a mandatory meeting of the UVI Research and Public Service Steering Committee scheduled for 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 1, in Room 143 of the Research and Extension Center, on the St. Croix campus.
Each program component should come prepared to present their proposed exhibit. All exhibits should follow the fair theme - "Healthy Food & a Safe Environment Make Sen$e." They should also focus on health and safety. Following these presentations, the committee will discuss ways to facilitate greater integration. It will also spend time exploring how each program/component can make their efforts more interactive in nature.

Submissions Sought for 24th Issue of The Caribbean Writer Through Nov. 30
The Caribbean Writer is seeking submissions for its 24th edition. Besides the usual poetry, short fiction and personal essays, critical articles and insights on Trevor Rhone and Wayne Brown are specifically being sought for a special section. The deadline for submissions is Nov. 30, 2009. The Caribbean should be central to submissions or the work should reflect a Caribbean heritage, experience or perspective.

60 V.I. Nursing Scholarships Available; Application Deadline is Dec. 2
UVI students and prospective UVI students who are interested in nursing as a career are advised that the V.I. Board of Education recently amended the qualifications for $400,000 in scholarships being funded by the Virgin Islands government. Scholarships will be offered for 30 students each in the St. Thomas-St. John and St. Croix districts.
To qualify, students studying to be licensed practical nurses or registered nurses must:
- Possess a grade point average of 2.5 or higher.
- Be a resident of the territory.
- Promise to work one to two years in the territory after completing their education.
- Be accepted into an accredited, licensed or Board of Education-approved institution.

University to Honor Retiree Mavis Gilchrist on Dec. 5

UVI 'A Christmas Celebration' Concert Set for Dec. 5 at the Reichhold Center
The University of the Virgin Islands' annual Christmas concert - titled: A Christmas Celebration - is scheduled for 8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5, at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts. The program will feature the University Concert Band, under the direction of Professor Austin A. Venzen, and the Steel Pan Ensemble, under the direction of Instructor Shenelle N. Warner.
The concert will highlight performers from UVI, Addelita Cancryn Junior High School, and community members including Lorna Freeman-Dennis, Lynesha Sweeney, Gylchris Sprauve, Drew Bowers, Detra Davis and others. The concert is sponsored by the Music Area of the University's Division of Humanities and Social Sciences.

EPSCoR Annual Conference to Focus on Integrating Science and Management
The Virgin Islands Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (VI-EPSCoR) will present its annual one-day conference on Friday, Dec. 4, at UVI's Administration and Conference Center on St. Thomas. This year's subject is Integrating Science and Management in Island Ecosystems.
The conference is designed to bring together scientists, natural resource managers and decision makers to address important, cross-cutting issues relevant to managing the Virgin Islands' fragile island ecosystems. This dialog will allow natural and social scientists to better understand the data needs of resource managers, while at the same time helping resource managers and policymakers to better utilize scientific information and integrate it into their decision making processes. The goal of the conference is to help chart a course towards making better informed decisions in planning, designing and implementing regulations with people in mind.

St. Thomas-St. John Agriculture and Food Fair Scheduled for Dec. 5-6
The St. Thomas-St. John Agriculture and Food Fair will be held on Dec. 5 and 6, on the grounds of UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts on the University's St. Thomas campus. UVI Holiday Recess Schedule
UVI's Human Resources Office has announced that UVI President Dr. David Hall has approved the 2009 Administrative end-of-the-year Holiday Recess.
All offices will be closed for the holiday recess from Monday, Dec. 21, 2009, through Friday, Jan. 1, 2010. All offices will reopen on Monday, January 4, 2010. In observance of Three King's Day, all offices will be closed on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010. Normal business hours will resume on Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010. Note: Paid "Administrative Leave" is applicable only for the regular work week (from Monday through Friday).
UVI Revises Academic Calendar for Spring Semester 2010
The University of the Virgin Islands has announced the revision of its Academic Calendar covering the 2010 spring semester. The calendar stipulates the schedule for all academic activities at the University for the period from Jan. 4 through May 16, 2010.
The revised calendar begins on Jan. 4, the date UVI staff members will return from the holiday break. UVI faculty members return on Jan. 7. New student orientation and registration are set for Jan. 7. Advisement and late registration are scheduled for Jan. 8. Spring semester classes begin on Jan. 11. UVI Final Computer Literacy Exams of Fall Semester Set for Nov. 21 and 24
UVI's final Computer Literacy Exams (CLE) of the fall semester are scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 21, on the St. Croix campus and for Tuesday, Nov. 24, on the St. Thomas campus.

UVI English Placement Tests Scheduled for Jan. 5, 2010
UVI English Placement tests are scheduled to be administered on Jan. 5, 2010. On the St. Thomas campus the testing will be held in Room 222 of the Sports and Fitness Center. On the St. Croix campus the test will be held in Evens Center Room 401. Students should bring a photo ID and two pens with blue or black ink.
The testing schedule is as follows:
- 8:30-9 a.m. - Registration
- 9:00-10 a.m. - English 100
- 10-10:15 a.m. - Break
- 10:15-11:15 a.m. - English 101
English Placement tests are offered for students who have never taken the SAT or who took the SAT and scored below 500 in Reasoning or below 21 on the ACT-English. Students who took but did not pass the test(s) may not take the tests again.
CELL Offering Three-Year SAT Prep Program on St. Thomas and St. Croix
Tenth-grade students on St. Thomas and St. Croix are invited to apply to a three-year Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) Preparatory Program offered by the University of the Virgin Islands Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVI-CELL) Center in partnership with Innovative Communications Corp.
Launched in 2005, the SAT Preparatory Program was designed to help Virgin Islands public high school students improve their SAT scores. It also tracks student progress from their sophomore through senior years. Classes will start on Jan. 9, 2010 and will be held 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. Sessions will be held on UVI's St. Croix and St. Thomas campus.
Applicants must be 10th-grade public high school students, with GPAs of 2.0 to 3.5. An administrative fee of $20 is required at orientation. Interested applicants must submit their applications to the UVI CELL Center by Monday, Nov. 30, to be considered. Space is limited and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

SBDC Offers Seminars on Preparing Success Plans for Business
The Virgin Island Small Business Development Center (VI SBDC) will present two seminars designed to help prepare success plans for small businesses in December on St. Thomas.
"Show Me the Money! The Narrative for Preparing a Success Plan for Your Business" will be offered on Thursday, Dec. 10. The second seminar, "Show Me the Money! The Financials for Preparing a Success Plan for Your Business," will follow on Wednesday, Dec. 16. Both sessions are scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. at the SBDC Training Facility at Nisky Center.
The presenter is Daryl Edwards, a business counselor at the VI SBDC. Admission is $25 for each seminar. Admission for individuals who pre-register for both seminars is only $35. The discount admission for those who pre-register for one seminar is $20. UVI students, staff, faculty and veterans of the U.S. military with proper ID will be admitted for free. Pre-registration is required to qualify for free admission.
It is recommended that business owners or potential business owners have a success plan for their business. These seminars will focus on the basics of how to put together a success plan. A success plan is a great guide for the day to day operations of any business. They are mandatory for businesses to qualify for bank loans.
