UVI Staff Invited to Conversation with President Hall Today - Thursday, Sept. 10
All UVI regular, professional and administrative staff members are invited to "A Conversation with President Hall" from 2 to 4 p.m. today (Thursday, Sept. 10). UVI Staff Council Chair Raquel Silver has asked that supervisors encourage their staff members to attend this activity. The conversation will take place via videoconference in the Great Hall of the North West Wing on the St. Croix campus and in the first floor conference room of the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus.
UVI Senate Meeting Scheduled for Friday, Sept. 11
The UVI Senate will hold its first meeting for the 2009-2010 school year from 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 11. The meeting will take place in Chase Auditorium (B-110) on St. Thomas and in Evans Center room 401 on St. Croix. Along with regular agenda items, UVI President Dr. David Hall will present remarks and announcements. New business items listed on the agenda include discussion concerning the Academic Calendar for 2009-2010, a focus on K-12 education and Dr. Hall's Seven Management Values. Future meetings of the UVI Senate are scheduled for Oct. 9, Nov. 12 and Dec. 10. All meetings of the UVI Senate are open to all UVI faculty and staff.
PRAXIS Exam to be Offered on St. Thomas Campus on Sept. 12
The PRAXIS Exams will be administered in the Nursing Education Building on UVI's St. Thomas campus at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12. Only persons who have registered with ETS will be tested. No walk-ins are allowed. Call 693-1462 with further questions.
English Proficiency Examinations Scheduled for Nov. 5
UVI's fall semester English Proficiency Examination (EPE) test is scheduled for 8:30 to 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses. On St. Thomas, the exam will be administered in Sports and Fitness Center rooms 221, 224 and 225. On St. Croix, the exam will be administered in Evans Center rooms 302, 303, 305 and 308. EPE registration forms are available from the Registrar's Office on St. Thomas (693-1150) and the Academic Affairs Office on St. Croix (692-4103). 'How To' Sessions on Student Organizations Set in September on St. Thomas
Students on UVI's St. Thomas campus interested in starting new student organizations, or becoming involved with existing organizations, can find out how at sessions planned on Sept. 10 and 18, in the Student Activities Center Conference Room. The sessions for students, student officers and advisors will run from noon to 1 p.m. each day.
Sept. 15 is the deadline for student organizations to register for this semester. A series of leadership development seminars - the Nuts-N-Bolts Executive Leadership Sessions - will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in Teacher Education building room 101, each day during the week of Sept. 21. The sessions are for the following groups: Sept. 21 - presidents and vice-presidents; Sept. 22 - secretaries; Sept. 23 - public relations officers; Sept. 24 - luncheon for faculty/staff advisors; and Sept. 25 - treasurers.

Intramural Coed Volleyball Coming to St. Thomas Campus
An intramural coed volleyball league is being formed on UVI's St. Thomas campus, with league play scheduled to begin in mid-September. Matches will take place at 8 p.m. on Thursdays. Teams will consist of 10 players, with no more than six players on the court at any time. Teams must have a minimum of three female players on the court to play. Currently enrolled UVI students, faculty and staff are eligible. No currently active varsity volleyball athletes are permitted in this league. Interested individuals should also signup. Open Enrollment for UVI Group Insurance Plans Continues Thorough Sept. 18
An open enrollment period for UVI's group medical, dental, supplemental life insurance, vision care and AFLAC plans is currently available. The open enrollment period will continue through Friday, Sept. 18, 2009. An email memo with details about open enrollment options was sent to UVI employees on July 22, by Director of Employee Benefits and Immigration Services Veda Richards. "You are reminded that our health and life insurance rates will increase Oct. 1, 2009," Richards wrote. "If you want to make changes to your current plan selections, the open enrollment period is the time to do it." Department heads in UVI's Security and Physical Plant areas were asked to post the memo for easy access by all staff members. Symposium to Feature Student Researchers on Sept. 20; UVI Community Invited
The University of the Virgin Islands' 11th annual Fall Student Research Symposium will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 20. More than 60 UVI student researchers are expected to participate in the event that will take place in the first floor conference room of the Administration and Conference Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus.
Sponsored by UVI's Division of Science and Mathematics and the Emerging Caribbean Scientists (ECS) program, the symposium's goal is to showcase the outstanding quality and diversity of undergraduate and graduate student research that UVI students have conducted over the summer and during the past year. The symposium is designed to demonstrate the importance of science, technology, engineering, mathematics and psychology oriented research to the greater UVI and Virgin Islands communities.

St. Croix Bookstore to Close for Inventory Sept. 24-30
The St. Croix Bookstore will be closed from Thursday, Sept. 24 through Wednesday, Sept. 30 for inventory. The Bookstore will resume normal operation on Thursday, Oct. 1. Students who have not purchased their required textbooks for the fall semester are asked to do so before Sept. 14. All unsold textbooks will be returned to the publishers and used books wholesalers after that date.
The Bookstore also plans to hold a student appreciation day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 15, with discounts on UVI merchandise, along with treats, games and prizes. Student IDs will be required.

24th Annual International Coastal Cleanup Set Sept. 19 at Brewers Beach
Members of the Virgin Islands public are encouraged to participate in the 24th annual International Coastal Cleanup which begins this September. Organized globally by the Ocean Conservancy, the USVI Coastweeks effort is coordinated locally by the University of the Virgin Islands, the V.I. Department of Planning and Natural Resources' Coastal Zone Management Division, Friends of the V.I. National Park and the V.I. Waste Management Authority.
Cleanups of beaches and watershed areas are being planned throughout the territory, with the effort beginning on Sept. 19, at Brewers Bay Beach on UVI's St. Thomas campus. Clean-ups will be held at numerous other locations on St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John during the remainder of September and into October. HIV/AIDS Conference Set for Oct. 2 on St. Thomas Campus
A day-long conference on HIV/AIDS titled "Youth Taking Control" will be held on UVI's St. Thomas campus on Friday, Oct. 2. All UVI students and high school seniors are invited to participate. The goal is to increase awareness of the risk of drug use and HIV/AIDS. The conference is sponsored by the Office of the Associate Campus Executive Administrator for Student Affairs. Researchers to Spotlight Virgin Islands Health Disparities on Oct. 15-16
Researchers from across the nation will visit the Virgin Islands
this fall to share their insights on issues related to health
disparities at the Second Annual Health Disparities Institute
sponsored by the Caribbean Exploratory NCMHD Research Center at the
University of the Virgin Islands. "Bridging Science, Practice and
Culture to Improve Health in the U.S. Virgin Islands" is the theme
for the institute, which is slated for Oct.15 and 16 at The Westin
St. John Resort & Villas.
"The institute will provide important health information to the entire Virgin Islands community," said Dr. Gloria Callwood, director of the Caribbean Exploratory Research Center, which is operated by UVI's Division of Nursing Education. "We're expecting at least 175 persons to participate, including both local and national presenters," Dr. Callwood said. "We invite all persons who are concerned about their health and the health of our community to join us at this important event."

The brief includes a wide variety of hurricane season information, including the season forecast, a listing of weather information web sites, UVI and Virgin Islands emergency contact numbers, preparedness checklists, and the names of individuals in charge of various levels of emergency operations and response.
Also available for on-going reference are the University's Emergency Hotline Numbers. HUGS Parent Empowerment Workshop Set for Sept. 16
The parents support group HUGS (Here to Understand & Give Support) will conduct its first meeting and workshop of the school year from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 16, at the Sugar Estate Head Start Center on St. Thomas. This and other HUGS sessions are held in collaboration with the Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD) and the Virgin Islands Family Information Network on Disabilities (VIFIND). Virgin Islands Seizure Disorder Support Group to Meet Sept. 24
The Virgin Islands Seizure Disorder Support Group (VISD) will conduct its monthly meeting from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24, at the Schneider Regional Hospital's Sun Room on St. Thomas. SBDC and First Bank to Present Free Economic Stimulus Package Seminars
UVI's Small Business Development Center (SBDC) and First Bank will present a series of free "economic stimulus package" seminars in September on St. Thomas and St. Croix. The series includes sessions titled: "Grow Your Business with Strong Credit," "Insurance Products for Small Businesses" and "A Marketing Plan, Is It Important?"
The seminars will be held on St. Thomas from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sept. 14, 16 and 17, at the SBDC Training Facility at Nksky Center. On St. Croix, the series is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. on Sept. 21, and from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sept. 23 and 24, at the SBDC Training Center in Sunshine Mall.

UVI CELL to Offer Real Estate Course in September
UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center will offer a course in real estate in September on St. Thomas and St. Croix. The course is designed to prepare individuals to take the Real Estate licensing exam. Classes will be offered from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturdays from Sept. 12 through Oct. 17. The course will cover real estate theory, mathematics, USVI rules and regulations, and applicable sections of the VI Code.
The course fee of $500 includes materials. It will be taught in the CELL Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus and at the Joseph A. Simpson Building, #23A Hospital Street, in Frederiksted, on St. Croix.

CELL to Offer International Computer Driving License Program
A nationally recognized computer certification program will once again be offered by the University of the Virgin Islands' Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center. The International Computer Driving License (ICDL) Program is a globally recognized training and certification program that allows individuals to become proficient in the use of information technology. It is recognized in more than 100 countries as the standard for certification of basic computer skills.
The seven-week program starts Sept. 14. Classes will be held 6 to 9 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the UVI-CELL Center on St. Thomas.
ICDL focuses on developing basic computer skills in seven areas: Basic Concepts of Information Technology, File Management, Word Processing, Spreadsheets, Database, Presentations, Communication and Information. Candidates who successfully complete all seven modules and pass the certification exams will receive an ICDL Certification card which serves as an achievement of fundamental knowledge in all seven computer skill areas.

CELL to Offer Certificate in Bookkeeping on St. Thomas and St. Croix
The University of the Virgin Islands Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center will offer a new series of courses this fall leading to a certificate in bookkeeping on St. Thomas and St. Croix. Course content is designed for individuals who want to qualify for entry-level jobs in bookkeeping or for entrepreneurs who want to manage their own books in a more professional and efficient manner. To earn a certificate, participants must take three courses. Introduction to Bookkeeping and Intermediate Bookkeeping are required. Following that, students will select one of two online courses: Introduction to QuickBooks 2009 or Performing Payroll in QuickBooks 2009.
Introduction to Bookkeeping will be offered from Sept. 15 through Oct. 1. Classes will be offered from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays on St. Croix, and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays on St. Thomas. The registration deadline is Aug. 10. The fee is $275.
Intermediate Bookkeeping will be offered from Oct. 13 through 19. Classes will be offered from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays on St. Croix, and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays on St. Thomas. The registration deadline is Sept. 14. The fee is $275.
The cost for the online electives is $129 per course.
