UVI Fall Semester Orientation Slated for Aug. 15-20 on Both Campuses

Orientation and registration for new and transfer students attending the University of the Virgin Islands will be held from Aug. 15-20, on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses. All newly matriculated students are required to participate in orientation. The orientation process is designed to enhance students' academic and social adjustment to college life.

UVI's 'Afternoon Mix' Radio Program to Focus on Upcoming Fall Semester

UVI's upcoming Fall Semester and the associated student orientation program will be the topics covered on today's edition of the UVI radio talk show "Afternoon Mix." Guest host Nanyamka Farrelly is sitting in for Liza Margolis. She will be interviewing Vice Provost for Access and Enrollment Dr. Judith Edwin, Assistant Supervisor of the St. Thomas campus Bookstore Wilfred Cooksey, and Associate Campus Administrator for Student Affairs Dr. Doris Battiste. Dr. Edwin is expected to focus on advisement and registration. Cooksey will share details on the availability of e-books and text book rentals for students, and Dr. Battiste will focus on activities available to students.

UVI's "Afternoon Mix" airs Monday through Friday from 4 to 5 p.m. on Radio One - AM 1000.

Dr. Karl S. Wright Appointed UVI's Provost

Dr. Karl S. Wright has been appointed provost of the University of the Virgin Islands, effective July 15. As provost, he is responsible for administering academic policy at the University. Dr. Wright comes to UVI with more than 20 years of senior and executive level administrative experience at private and public universities. His higher education administrative experience began in 1985 when he served as chair of the Department of Economics at South Carolina State University. In 1987 he assumed the position of dean of the School of Business at the same university. Seven years later, Dr. Wright was named vice president for academic affairs at Florida Memorial University (FMU). He also served as executive vice president and provost at Florida Memorial University until 2006, when he was selected to serve as president of that institution.

4-H Summer Academy Program Closing Ceremony Set Today on St. Croix

The closing program for UVI's 4-H Summer Academy program on St. Croix is set for 6 p.m. today (Thursday, Aug. 5) at the St. Croix Educational Complex. The public is invited. The closing program for the program on St. Thomas was conducted on Wednesday, Aug. 4. The program is conducted by the Cooperative Extension Service.

Reichhold to Unveil 2010-2011 Season with Launch Party on Aug. 19

UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts will launch its 2010-2011 season with a party at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 19, at the center on the University's St. Thomas campus. The public is encouraged to come out and see what entertainment - reggae, jazz, world music, R&B, dance and more - is in store at St. Thomas' premiere venue for quality entertainment. Along with the launch party, the St. Thomas-St. John Chamber of Commerce will conduct a "Business After Hours" event. Included will be a free buffet and music by Spectrum Band. VI Autism Network Kite Flying Jam Set Aug. 15 on St. Croix Campus

UVI's St. Croix campus will host the VI Autism Network's second annual Kite Flying Back to School Jam from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 15. Free kites will be provided to students. Music will be provided by DJ Mav. The Autism Network is joined by the UVI Buc Volunteers in presenting the activity. Sponsors are Plaza Extra and Seaborne Airlines. UVI's Upward Bound Offices Closed Aug. 2 - Aug. 6

UVI's Upward Bound Program staff members are participating in a college tour from Monday, Aug. 2, through Friday, Aug. 6. During this period, Upward Bound offices on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses will be closed. The offices will reopen on Monday, Aug. 9.

STT Campus Health Services Office to Closed Aug. 2- Aug. 6

The Health Services Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus will be closed from Monday, Aug. 2, through Friday, Aug. 6, while Supervisor Ronda Herbert is on leave. The Center will reopen at 9 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 9. In case of an emergency, please contact the Security Office at extension 1530 or call 911.

UVI's Libraries Operating on Intersession Schedule

The University of the Virgin Islands libraries are operating on an intersession schedule from July 30 through Aug. 22. During this period, UVI's libraries will be open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays. They will be closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Regular library hours will resume on Monday, Aug. 23, at 8 a.m.

CERC Extends Deadline Date for Abstracts for 2010 Health Disparities Institute

The deadline for the submission of abstracts for the 3rd Annual Health Disparities Institute has been extended to Aug. 15, 2010. The UVI School of Nursing's Caribbean Exploratory (NCMHD) Research Center of Excellence (CERC) will conduct the institute on Thursday, Oct. 21, and Friday Oct. 22, on St. Thomas at the Frenchman's Reef & Morning Star Beach Resort.

The Health Disparities Institute annually draws top local and national presenters. It is designed for local health and human services professionals, health policy leaders, criminal justice professionals, elected and appointed officials, educators, students, community leaders, concerned citizens, religious leaders and the media. Continuing Medical Education and Continuing Education Unit credits are available.

CES 'From the Ground Up' Newsletter Now Available Online

The latest edition of the UVI Cooperative Extension Service (CES) "From the Ground Up" has been published and is available from the Publications link in the CES section of the UVI web site - www.uvi.edu - and from this direct link. The 16-page newsletter includes a wide-ranging review of recent CES activities. It also features a look at the CES 4-H program's winning Carnival Children's Parade Troupe and a report on CES Associate Director Kofi Boateng's recent trip to Jordan where Boateng conducted health and nutrition workshops for 300 sheep farmers and 35 extension agents.

The newsletter covered tart-making demonstrations, the initiation of a four-year wastewater treatment licensing program, the restoration of St. Croix's Adventure Gut, and participation by the CES and Agricultural Experiment Station in the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. There are also articles on Mango Melee and the recent meeting of agriculture commissioners from southern states held on St. Croix. CES State Director Kwame Garcia, Sr., said the newsletter clearly portrays the multifaceted components of the CES. HIV/AIDS Peer Educators, Summer Scientists Featured in UVI Today... Photo Blog

The UVI Today... photo blog continues its focus on the summer activities of students. The latest entry features a look at four of UVI HIV/AIDS Peer Educators - Adrienne Anthony, Derron Ambrose, Naji Shadeed and Alyssa Ryan - who attended the recent Minority Education Institution Substance Abuse and HIV/AIDS Prevention Training session held in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. This was the fifth year that UVI students participated in this training. Also featured on UVI Today... are photos from the more than 20 students who presented the results of recent research projects at the Eighth Annual Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium on the St. Croix campus on Friday, July 30.

UVI Chili Cooks Sought for Cook-Off; Event Set Aug. 22 at Brewers Beach

The 26th annual Texas Society of the Virgin Islands Chili Cook-Off will take place at Brewers Bay Beach on UVI's St. Thomas campus on August 22. If there are chili cooks within the University community who would like to field a team to enter the chili competition (or to volunteer), please contact Patrice Johnson at 693-1058.

Prizes are awarded to the top 10 chili cooks, the top three vegetarian chili cooks and top three junior cooks. Rules for the chili entries can be found at http://www.thevirginpod.org.

Fall Semester Notes...

UVI's Fall Semester Classes Set to Begin Aug. 23

UVI's Fall Semester classes will begin on Monday, Aug. 23.

Returning Students: Registration - online or in-person - for returning students is available now through Monday, Aug. 9, 2010. Students must confer with advisors to receive information on their academic plans and to obtain PIN numbers needed for registration.

New and Transfer Students: Orientation activities are slated for Aug. 15-20. Advisement and registration for new and transfer students takes place on Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2010.

Late Registration: Advisement and late registration are set for Thursday and Friday, Aug. 19-20. A late fee of $75 will be charged. For details, call (340) 693-1160 on St. Thomas or (340) 692-4158 on St. Croix.

Fall 2010 New Student Orientation Schedules Available Online

UVI's Fall Semester 2010 new student orientation schedules have been published and are available from the Admissions section of the UVI web site - www.uvi.edu - and from this direct link. Orientation activities are scheduled for the week of Aug. 15. Fall Semester 2010 classes will begin on Monday, Aug. 23.

UVI's 2010-2011 Catalog Available on Website

The 2010-2011 University of the Virgin Islands Catalog is now available in electronic format (PDF) on the UVI website. The new catalog consists of 216 pages and reflects the renaming from of the University's academic units as colleges and schools. It can be accessed from the Spotlight button on the UVI home page - www.uvi.edu - or from this direct link.

Student Affairs Synergy Newsletter for St. Croix Campus Posted Online

The August/September issue of Student Affairs Synergy, a newsletter published by the Division of Student Affairs on the St. Croix campus, has been posted to the UVI web site. Along with general information, the newsletter features a welcome to Fall Semester students, a calendar, student gallery and tips for student success. Blackboard System Maintenance Completed; Fall 2010 Courses Ready for Faculty

Maintenance of UVI's Blackboard system has been completed. All Blackboard users are now able to log into the Blackboard course management system using a single sign-on. What this means is the username and password individuals use for Blackboard will be the same as the username and password they use to log into their UVI computers. Those unable to log into Blackboard using the single sign-on should contact the UVI Helpdesk at ext. 1466 or send email to helpdesk@uvi.edu.

Also, Fall 2010 courses are now available to faculty. Courses will initially be labeled "unavailable" - that refers to the student not to the instructor. Instructors may access assigned courses and, when ready, will need to set courses to "available" to allow student access. Direct any questions to the UVI Helpdesk at ext. 1466.

Staff Council General Meeting Postponed Until Start of Fall Semester

The UVI Staff Council has announced that a Staff Council General Meeting, originally scheduled for July 27, has been postponed until the start of the 2010 Fall Semester. The date change has been made in order to allow for the maximum number of general, professional and administrative staff members to participate in the session.

The meeting will serve as an open forum designed to allow discussion of staff issues and concerns. A report on the UVI Staff Council Officers' Retreat held in May will also be given. For more information contact Staff Council Chair Raquel Silver at 692-4061 or send email to rsantia@uvi.edu.

New Faculty Orientation, Fall Semester Faculty Convocation Dates Announced

UVI's Office of the Provost has announced dates for the University's New Faculty Orientation and the 2010 Fall Semester Faculty Convocation. The New Faculty Orientation is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 19 and 20. The orientation sessions will take place at the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. The Fall Semester Faculty Convocation is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 20. The convocation will be videoconferenced between the campuses with access available in Evans Center Room 401 on St. Croix and in Chase Auditorium (B-110) on St. Thomas. UVI's Fall Semester Financial Aid Awards Letters Available to Students Online

UVI's Access and Enrollment Management and Financial Aid offices have announced that financial aid awards letters for all Fall Semester students can be accessed via the University BUCSS (Banweb) online system. Students are requested to log into their account and review their information and respond accordingly. The login page is available from the Current Students/BUCSS tabs on the UVI home page - www.uvi.edu - and from this direct link.

This new process will facilitate immediate access to financial aid information and will expedite the disbursement process. Details of the new process, including login instructions for new users, were provided to students via email in June. Click here to see a copy of that information. Funds will not be disbursed on student accounts until they register for classes. Students are advised to contact the Financial Aid Office - St. Thomas (340) 693-1090 or St. Croix (340) 692-4145 - for further information or to share concerns regarding award letters.

UVI Community Contact Information Needed for Emergency Messaging

The University plans to utilize text messaging and email alerts as communication strategies for informing students, faculty and staff during the current hurricane season and in the event of other emergencies.

In order to participate in UVI's emergency text messaging system, all students, faculty and staff must have current cell phone and email address information included in the "Personal Information" section of their BanWeb accounts.

If your contact information has changed you can update it on BanWeb. Details on this process are available from this link: "Join UVI's Emergency Text Messaging System." This link is also available from the "Inside UVI" section of the web site - www.uvi.edu.

CELL to Host Workshops on Writing Business Plans on Aug. 11

UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVI-CELL) Center will host one-day workshops on St. Thomas and St. Croix designed to help individuals achieve effective business planning. The How to Write a Business Plan workshops are scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 11. On St. Thomas, the workshop will be held at the UVI-CELL Center on the St. Thomas campus. On St. Croix, it will be held at the Joseph A. Simpson Building, #23A Hospital Street in Frederiksted.

The workshop is part of a series being offered by UVI-CELL in conjunction with the American Management Association. Participants will learn how to evaluate a company's capabilities, strengths and weaknesses, pinpoint crucial elements of the environment, set realistic goals and objectives, and implement the plan successfully.

Excel Training Workshops Scheduled on St. Thomas

The University of the Virgin Islands' Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVI-CELL) Center will be host two workshops for individuals interested in becoming proficient with the features and techniques of Microsoft Excel software. Both workshops will be held at the UVI-CELL Center on St. Thomas.

The first workshop, Intro to Excel will be held 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 10. In this hands-on session, participants will learn how to create spreadsheets, format cells, utilize basic formulas and functions, and master tools to make working with Excel much easier.

The second workshop, Unleashing the Potential of Excel, will be held 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on August 17 and 18. Participants will learn how to incorporate practical solutions for using Excel to manage data and generate reports, create and manage lists, use formulas and functions, and much more.

CELL Offering Free PRAXIS Tutorials for V.I. Teachers Through Aug. 31

UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVI-CELL) Center in collaboration with the V.I. Department of Education's Division of Human Resources is offering free Praxis I and II tutorials for public school teachers through Aug. 31. On St. Thomas, tutorial sessions are offered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday at the UVI-CELL Center. On St. Croix, the Math tutorial will be held 4 to 6 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, while the English tutorial will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Tutorials are offered in Room H200 of the St. Croix Educational Complex.

This free service is funded by the V.I. Department of Education. The tutorials prepare teachers for the Praxis I and II exams which allow them to be designated as highly qualified teachers in order to meet the mandates of the No Child Left Behind Act.
