Reichhold to Unveil 2010-2011 Season with Launch Party Today
UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts will launch its 2010-2011 season with a party at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 19, at the center on the University's St. Thomas campus. The public is encouraged to come out and see what entertainment - reggae, jazz, world music, R&B, dance and more - is in store at St. Thomas' premiere venue for quality entertainment. Along with the launch party, the St. Thomas-St. John Chamber of Commerce will conduct a "Business After Hours" event. Included will be a free buffet and music by Spectrum Band. Fall Semester Late Registration Today and Friday; Classes Begin Monday, Aug. 23

New Faculty Orientation Scheduled Aug. 19-20 on St. Thomas Campus
UVI's Office of the Provost has announced dates for the University's New Faculty Orientation and the 2010 Fall Semester Faculty Convocation. The New Faculty Orientation is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. today and Friday, Aug. 19 and 20. The orientation sessions will take place at the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus.
University Convocation Scheduled for Friday, Aug. 20
UVI President Dr. David Hall will present the University Convocation from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 20. The videoconferenced session will be available in Evans Center Rooms 401 and 713 on St. Croix and in Chase Auditorium (B-110) and the CELL Center Room 101 and Education Building Room 101 on St. Thomas. Fall Semester Faculty Convocation Slated for Friday, Aug. 20
The Fall Semester Faculty Convocation is scheduled for 12:15 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 20. Seminar on Muscadine and Bunch Grapes Scheduled Aug. 25 on St. Croix
The general public is invited to a seminar on the cultivation of Muscadine and Bunch grapes from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 25, in Room 133 of the Research and Extension Center on UVI's St. Croix campus.
Dr. Sadanand A. Dhekney, who studies grapevine genetics at the University of Florida's Center for Tropical Agriculture, will make the presentation. The seminar title is: Development of Muscadine Grape Cultivars and Field Evaluation of Bunch Grapes for Disease Resistance. The seminar, which is free, will focus on the evaluation and release of Muscadine varieties and the field evaluation of genetically modified grapevines for disease resistance. UVI to Host Forum on Alternative and Renewable Energy Aug. 26
UVI will host a free forum on alternative and renewable energy from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 26. Experts in the areas of wind, solar, waste-to-energy and geothermal technology will make presentations. The forum is sponsored by UVI's VI-EPSCoR office. It will be offered at the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus and, via videoconference, in Room 401 of the Melvin Evans Center on the St. Croix campus. UVI's Libraries Operating on Intersession Schedule
The University of the Virgin Islands libraries are operating on an intersession schedule through Aug. 22. During this period, UVI's libraries will be open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Mondays through Fridays. They will be closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Regular library hours will resume on Monday, Aug. 23, at 8 a.m.

UVI Chili Cooks Sought for Cook-Off; Event Set Aug. 22 at Brewers Beach
The 26th annual Texas Society of the Virgin Islands Chili Cook-Off will take place at Brewers Bay Beach on UVI's St. Thomas campus on August 22. UVI Purchasing to Conduct Annual Inventory Aug. 23-27
UVI's Purchasing Department will conduct its annual inventory of the University's assets during the week of Aug. 23 to 27, 2010. Authorized persons will be moving throughout all buildings and offices on both campuses inventorying and tagging university equipment where appropriate. To facilitate this project, office personnel are asked to identify major equipment- $2,500 or more - purchased during fiscal year 2010.

St. Croix Biodiversity Film Fest to Focus on Mega-Cities on Aug. 26
The 2010 Year of Biodiversity Film Fest on St. Croix continues on Thursday, Aug. 26, with a free screening of the film "The Urban Explosion." The feature, which is a segment of the PBS series "Journey to Planet Earth," focuses on four mega-cities - Mexico City, Istanbul, Shanghai, and New York City - with an eye towards investigating a major challenge of the 21st Century: how to shelter and sustain the world's exploding urban population without destroying the delicate balance of our environment. Award-winning filmmakers Marilyn and Hal Weiner produced the segment. It is narrated by Kelly McGillis. The screening is set for 6 p.m. in the UVI Theatre (Evans Center Room 401) on the University's St. Croix campus. Admission is free and no reservations are required. The festival is co-hosted by the St. Croix Environmental Association (SEA) and the University of the Virgin Islands.

Free Workshop on Creating School Gardens Planned on Aug. 27
UVI's Cooperative Extension Service on the St. Thomas campus will conduct a free workshop titled "Creating a School Garden" on Friday, Aug. 27. The workshop is designed for public, private and parochial school teachers, paraprofessionals and any authorized school representatives in the St. Thomas-St. John District. The workshop will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The venue is to be determined. The workshop will focus on the steps needed to create a vegetable garden.

OIRP to Administer CIRP 2010 Freshman Survey
UVI's Office of Institutional Research and Planning (OIRP) will administer the 2010 Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) Freshman Survey from Aug. 23 through Sept. 10. The survey, developed by the Higher Education Research Institute at the University of California-Los Angeles, has been used for more than 40 years to document trends in the national student population. It will be administered in Freshman Development Seminar classes on both St. Thomas and St. Croix. Survey findings are designed to show how students have both changed and remained the same over the years. Data gathered by the survey helps UVI administrators better understand the needs of its students and how to provide better services. Successfully completing the survey would not be possible without the support and willingness of UVI's Freshman Development Seminar students and instructors. The CIRP report helps the University compute expected completion rates based on high school GPA, test scores, and the sex and ethnicity of incoming students. The Upward Bound Office on UVI's St. Thomas campus will be closed for vacation beginning today (Monday, Aug. 16). The office will reopen on Monday, Sept. 13, 2010.
Human Resources Posts Latest Newsletter to Web Site
UVI's Human Resources Office has published the latest issue of the "Inside the World of Human Resources" newsletter and posted it to the HR section of the UVI web site - www.uvi.edu. The newsletter, which is also available from this direct link, notes a variety of deadlines important to employees and points out that Open Enrollment for CIGNA Health Care, CIGNA Life Insurance and the UnitedHealth Care/Spectera Vision Plan continues through Sept. 17, 2010. 2010 End-of-Year Processing Deadlines Announced by Purchasing/Accounting
As the end of the current fiscal year nears, UVI's Purchasing and Accounting offices have announced deadlines to allow for the timely processing of the appropriate documents to complete purchasing requirements.

Receiving reports must be processed before payment can be made against an invoice. For most purchase orders, the invoice is sent directly from the vendor to the Accounting Department. To meet the aforementioned deadlines, you may have to contact the vendor and request the invoice.

Blackboard System Maintenance Completed; Fall 2010 Courses Ready for Faculty
Maintenance of UVI's Blackboard system has been completed. All Blackboard users are now able to log into the Blackboard course management system using a single sign-on. What this means is the username and password individuals use for Blackboard will be the same as the username and password they use to log into their UVI computers. Those unable to log into Blackboard using the single sign-on should contact the UVI Helpdesk at ext. 1466 or send email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Also, Fall 2010 courses are now available to faculty. Courses will initially be labeled "unavailable" - that refers to the student not to the instructor. Instructors may access assigned courses and, when ready, will need to set courses to "available" to allow student access. Direct any questions to the UVI Helpdesk at ext. 1466.
UVI's Fall Semester Financial Aid Award Letters Available to Students Online
UVI's Access and Enrollment Management and Financial Aid offices have announced that financial aid awards letters for all Fall Semester students can be accessed via the University BUCSS (Banweb) online system. Students are requested to log into their account and review their information and respond accordingly. The login page is available from the Current Students/BUCSS tabs on the UVI home page - www.uvi.edu - and from this direct link.
This new process will facilitate immediate access to financial aid information and will expedite the disbursement process. Details of the new process, including login instructions for new users, were provided to students via email in June. Click here to see a copy of that information. Funds will not be disbursed on student accounts until they register for classes. Students are advised to contact the Financial Aid Office - St. Thomas (340) 693-1090 or St. Croix (340) 692-4145 - for further information or to share concerns regarding award letters.

The University plans to utilize text messaging and email alerts as communication strategies for informing students, faculty and staff during the current hurricane season and in the event of other emergencies.
In order to participate in UVI's emergency text messaging system, all students, faculty and staff must have current cell phone and email address information included in the "Personal Information" section of their BanWeb accounts.

CELL Offering Free PRAXIS Tutorials for V.I. Teachers Through Aug. 31
UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVI-CELL) Center in collaboration with the V.I. Department of Education's Division of Human Resources is offering free Praxis I and II tutorials for public school teachers through Aug. 31. On St. Thomas, tutorial sessions are offered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday at the UVI-CELL Center. On St. Croix, the Math tutorial will be held 4 to 6 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, while the English tutorial will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Tutorials are offered in Room H200 of the St. Croix Educational Complex.
This free service is funded by the V.I. Department of Education. The tutorials prepare teachers for the Praxis I and II exams which allow them to be designated as highly qualified teachers in order to meet the mandates of the No Child Left Behind Act.
CELL to Hold Real Estate Sales Course for V.I. Residents
Individuals interested in learning more about the real estate industry are urged to register for the Real Estate Sales course offered by the University of the Virgin Islands - Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVI-CELL) Center.
On St. Croix, classes will be held 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturdays beginning Sept. 4, at the Joseph A. Simpson Building, #23A Hospital Street in Frederiksted. On St. Thomas, classes will be held 6-9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Sept. 14, at the UVI-CELL Center on the St. Thomas Campus.
The Real Estate Sales course is designed to expose individuals to the real estate industry and specifically to prepare them for the Real Estate Salesperson licensing examination. A variety of topics will be covered including real estate theory, mathematics, USVI rules and regulations and all applicable sections of the V.I. Code.

CELL Workshops Aim to Enhance Presentation Skills
The UVI-CELL Center will host one-day workshops designed to enhance an individual's overall presentation skills and make a good impression on St. Thomas and St. Croix on Sept. 15. Individual sessions will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The St. Thomas workshop will take place at the CELL center on the UVI campus. On St. Croix, the workshop will be held at the Joseph A. Simpson Building, #23A Hospital Street in Frederiksted.
The workshops are part of a series offered by the UVI-CELL in conjunction with the American Management Association (AMA). Participants will be provided with tips overcome presentation fear, prepare for the presentation, communicate clearly while gaining the attention of the audience, elicit valuable feedback, avoid overloading the audience and much more.
