St. Croix Residence Hall Named in Honor of Delta M. Dorsch
UVI named the residence hall complex on the St. Croix campus after Delta M. Dorsch at a dedication ceremony in her honor at 11 a.m. today (Thursday, Dec. 16). The St. Croix campus residence hall complex is now known as the Delta M. Jackson Dorsch Complex.
Mrs. Dorsch, a native of Frederiksted, worked for more than 30 years as a teacher and supervisor in the Virgin Islands educational system. She served as the territory's Deputy Commissioner for Curriculum and Instruction from 1977 until 1982 and also taught elementary education in undergraduate and graduate programs on the St. Croix campus of the University of the Virgin Islands. UVI Senate Meeting Cancelled
The meeting of the UVI Senate scheduled for Friday, Dec. 17, has been cancelled. In making the announcement, UVI Senate Chair Ardrina Scott Elliott said that no action items or new discussion items had been presented for the meeting's agenda. The next meeting of the UVI Senate is scheduled for Jan. 21, 2011.
Call for Artwork Issued for Afternoon on the Green; Students Encouraged to Make Submissions
The University of the Virgin Islands Afternoon on the Green Committee has issued a call for artwork for the 2011 Afternoon on the Green. All amateur artists in the Virgin Islands are asked to submit artwork that depicts this year's theme, "Join UVI in Going Green, Afternoon on the Green 2011." The artwork should be submitted in PDF format via e-mail to UVI's Special Events Coordinator Liza Margolis at firstname.lastname@example.org. Each entry must include the artist's name, mailing address, e-mail address, telephone number and school (if applicable). Parents' names must be included for artists who are under the age of 18. Entries must be submitted no later than Friday, Jan. 21.
The selected artwork will be used in all Afternoon on the Green posters, flyers and t-shirts. The name of the winner will also be used in marketing efforts. High school and college students are especially encouraged to submit artwork. All entries will be displayed at Afternoon on the Green. CES to Offer Free Weight Management Workshops on St. Thomas in January
Two, six-week Weight Management Workshops will be offered to members of the UVI community and the general public beginning in January on St. Thomas. The free workshops, presented by Dr. Caryl Johnson, will focus on topics such as the food pyramid, portion size, energy balance, exercise, behavior modification and menu planning. Sessions are planned from noon to 1 p.m. on Tuesdays from Jan. 18 through Feb. 22, and on Thursdays, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. from Jan. 20 through Feb. 24. The workshops are sponsored by the 4-H, Family and Consumer Sciences Program of the UVI Cooperative Extension Services (CES). Sessions will be held at the CES office in the New House Building on UVI's St. Thomas campus.

Spring Registration Open for Returning Students; New Students Register Jan. 5
Online registration for the spring semester using the University's BanWeb system is available to returning UVI students now through Jan. 3, 2011. To register, students must confer with advisors to have courses approved and to receive login PINs. Tuition and fees for returning students may be paid - in person, by mail, by credit card or online - through Jan. 4, 2011. Payment by mail must be postmarked no later than Dec. 17, 2010.
Registration for new students is scheduled for Jan. 5, 2011. Registration is available in the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. On the St. Croix campus, registration is available in the Great Hall.

University Mourns Passing of St. Thomas Employee Lucien Lee
The University community extends its condolences to the family and friends of Lucien "Pineapple" Lee, who died on Monday, Dec. 6, 2010. Mr. Lee worked for several years as a Groundskeeper II in the Physical Plant department on UVI's St. Thomas campus.
The following funeral arrangements have been announced. The first viewing is scheduled for 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 19, at the Davis Funeral Home. A second viewing and testimonial service is scheduled for 8:30 to 9:55 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 20, at the Philadelphia Seventh Day Adventist Church on Raphune Hill, just east of Al Cohen Mall. The funeral service will follow at 10 a.m. at the Philadelphia Seventh Day Adventist Church. Interment will be at the Western Cemetery III.

'The Caribbean Writer' 2011 Art/Poetry Calendar Perfect for Holiday Giving
"The Caribbean Writer," UVI's literary journal with a Caribbean focus, has published a 2011 Calendar in time for holiday giving. Sub-titled "12 Months of Art and Poetry," the calendar features quality fine art by professional, local artists and some of the best poems to have graced the journal's pages. Along with a careful integration of art and poetry, the calendar includes the independence dates of various Caribbean islands, birthdays of local as well as regional poets, and important dates specific to the Virgin Islands. Dr. Opal Palmer Adisa, editor of "The Caribbean Writer," said the calendar is "a celebration of all of us."
Proceeds from calendar sales will help support the 25th anniversary "Ay-Ay Conference" for teachers and writers to be held at UVI in June of 2011. Calendars are $20 each, with bulk orders of three calendars for $50.

UVI's Music Area to Present Works by African-Diaspora Composers on Jan. 9
The Music Area of UVI's College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences will present a performance of music by African-Diaspora composers at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 9, 2011. Works by R. Nathaniel Dett, Leslie Adams, Lorna C. Young-Wright, Andrés Wheatley, Florence B. Price and Wendell Whalum will be presented. Admission is free. The concert will take place at the Nisky Moravian Church on St. Thomas. The presentation will feature mezzo soprano Janice R. Jackson of the University of Maryland-Baltimore County and pianist Lorna C. Young-Wright of the University of the Virgin Islands.

QuickBooks Basics Workshop Offered on St. Thomas on Jan. 5
The VI Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will offer a QuickBooks Basics Workshop for Beginners from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011, at the SBDC Training Facility at Nisky Center on St. Thomas. The fee for the hands-on workshop is $99.
The workshop will cover setting up company files, completing the sample "Easy Step Interview," reviewing charts of accounts, items setup, setting preferences and customization of forms. Also included will be directions for everyday activities, such as estimating, invoicing, making and receiving payments, recording deposits, entering bills, credit card entries, writing and processing checks, paying tax liabilities, generating and customizing reports, memorizing transactions, using filters, using passwords, creating an accountant's copy, and data conversion.
