New St. Thomas Campus Student Organizations Must Register by Jan. 21

The deadline for new organizations on the St. Thomas campus to register for the 2010 Spring Semester is Jan. 21. Organization Process Workshops are scheduled for noon to 1:30 p.m. and from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 22, in room 101 of the Teacher Education building. The workshops are for new organization executives and organization advisors, and for those who missed the Fall Semester 2009 orientation series. Light refreshments will be available. Topics to be covered include: approval process for organization activities, student travel authorization, funding for organization activities and responsibilities of organization advisors. H1N1 Vaccinations Offered Jan. 21 on St. Thomas Campus

H1N1 vaccinations will be available to members of the University community and to the general public at the Sports and Fitness Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus on Thursday, Jan. 21, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Students, faculty and staff interested in receiving the vaccine can do so at this time. Institutional Advancement Component Retreat Scheduled for Jan. 21

UVI's Institutional Advancement Component will conduct a component retreat on Thursday, Jan. 21. Component offices - Alumni Affairs, Advancement, Annual Giving, Public Relations and the Reichhold Center - will participate. Institutional Advancement office phones will be monitored throughout the day. The Reichhold Center's office and the Reichhold Box Office will remain open to the public. The Box Office will be open until 6 p.m. to accommodate ticket sales for the St. Thomas Blues Festival.

First Annual St. Thomas Blues Festival Set Friday, Jan. 22

The First Annual St. Thomas Blues Festival is scheduled for 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 22, at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts. The Reichhold is teaming up with organizer Steve Simon to bring three incredible blues acts to the stage - Curtis Salgado, Trampled Under Foot and Eden Brent. Salgado is heralded as one of the finest blues harmonica players in the country. His style became the basis for the Blues Brothers movie starring John Belushi. Trampled Under Foot - featuring Nick Schnebelen, Kris Schnebelen and Danielle Schnebelen - are the 2008 winners of the International Blues Challenge. Joining the lineup is Eden Brent, who has been praised for her "whiskey-smoke" voice, drawing comparisons to Janis Joplin and Sarah Vaughn. Application Deadline for Dell Thurmond Woodard Fellowship is Feb. 15

UVI students are reminded that the deadline to apply for the Dell Thurmond Woodard Fellowship is Feb. 15, 2010. This scholarship is for students interested in technology, public policy, ethics and diversity. The Dell Thurmond Woodard Fellowship, which is part of the Eben Tisdale Fellowship, is a summer internship available to undergraduate and graduate students. This Fellowship offers a $5,000 grant for students to intern in Washington D.C., where the latest in technology meets the public policy arena.

The Dell Thurmond Woodard Fellowship was created in memory of the late Thurmond Woodard, Dell's former vice president of global diversity and chief ethics, privacy and compliance officer. The Summer 2010 Fellowship runs from June 14 through Aug. 6. The goal of the Fellowship is to create a supportive and collegial environment in which a new class of public policy professionals will be mentored to help ensure that the high-tech industry continues to have highly capable and well-trained individuals in both policy advocacy and senior management positions.

RT Park Board of Directors to Meet Jan. 20 on St. Croix

The Board of Directors of the UVI Research and Technology Park Corporation will meet at 3 p.m. (AST) on Wednesday, Jan. 20. Americans with Disabilities Training Available on St. Croix, St. Thomas

Interested members of the UVI community are invited to participate in free Americans with Disabilities Act training opportunities scheduled on St. Croix and St. Thomas in January. The training is offered in association with Cornell University's Northeast ADA Center. Sessions are available on St. Croix on Jan. 25 and 26, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Carambola Beach Resort & Spa, and on St. Thomas on Jan. 28 and 29, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort.

Student Health Survey Results to be Presented to Staff and Students Jan. 28

Julie Sanem, MPH of Boynton Health Services of the University of Minnesota, will be presenting the results of the College Student Health Survey on Thursday, Jan. 28, to administrators, faculty and staff from noon to 1 p.m. in the first-floor conference room of UVI's Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. A presentation for students will take place from 1-2 p.m. in the same room.

The College Student Health Survey was the first comprehensive survey of UVI students that sought to understand their health status, health care coverage and utilization, emotional and mental health, personal safety, nutrition and physical activity, chemical health, and sexual health. The presentation will include the survey results, services offered by UVI Counseling and Health Services, how the data is used at other institutions and how it will be used at UVI.

Funeral Services Scheduled for UVI Security Officer Emily Gumbs

Funeral services for St. Thomas campus Security Officer Emily Gumbs, who passed away during the holiday break, will take place at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 26, at Sts. Peter & Paul Cathedral. Interment will follow at the Western Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Davis Funeral Home. Visitation with the family at the funeral home is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Jan. 25, and from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on Jan. 26.

Preparations Underway for Inauguration of Dr. David Hall

The University of the Virgin Islands is preparing for the inauguration of UVI's fifth President, Dr. David Hall, on March 6, 2010. Members of the Inaugural Steering Committee and Inaugural subcommittees are finalizing the arrangements for events that will take place throughout the month of March, including Dr. Hall's Installation at the Reichhold Center for the Arts on March 6 at 6:30 p.m.

A number of public and VIP events are scheduled, which can be greatly enhanced by volunteer participation. Individuals who are interested in volunteering to assist with inaugural events and activities are asked to send an e-mail to: inaugvolunteer@uvi.edu

Agrifest 2010 Organizers to Vendors, Visitors: Plan Ahead

Organizers of the 39th St. Croix Agriculture and Food Fair are urging the public to make plans now to attend this year's fair scheduled for Feb. 13 to 15.

Vendors, farmers and exhibitors are being reminded that display space is in high demand for the largest fair of its kind in the Caribbean.

NSE Applications Available from Counseling Services Office

Students interested in studying abroad through the National Student Exchange (NSE) program may obtain the NSE application and directory booklet from UVI Counseling Services office on the St. Thomas campus. Applications are currently being accepted for the 2010-2011 academic year. Interested students are encouraged to start the application process as early as possible.
