First Annual St. Thomas Blues Festival Set Friday, Jan. 22
The First Annual St. Thomas Blues Festival takes place at 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 22, at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts. The Reichhold is teaming up with organizer Steve Simon to bring three incredible blues acts to the stage - Curtis Salgado, Trampled Under Foot and Eden Brent. Salgado is heralded as one of the finest blues harmonica players in the country. His style became the basis for the Blues Brothers movie starring John Belushi. Trampled Under Foot - featuring Nick Schnebelen, Kris Schnebelen and Danielle Schnebelen - are the 2008 winners of the International Blues Challenge. Joining the lineup is Eden Brent, who has been praised for her "whiskey-smoke" voice, drawing comparisons to Janis Joplin and Sarah Vaughn. V.I. Big Read Program 2010 to Launch Friday, Jan. 22
The Virgin Islands Council on the Arts (VICA) will launch the Big Read Program 2010 on Friday, Jan. 22, celebrating Ernest Gaines' best selling novel "A Lesson Before Dying." The launch will take place at The Battery, Cruz Bay, St. John.
The Big Read Program is a partnership between the Department of Planning & Natural Resources - Division of Libraries and Museums, the University of the Virgin Islands' Reichhold Center for the Arts and the IT Learning Resources & Student Technology Services Area, the Department of Education and the Virgin Islands Police Department.
As part of a national initiative to spur a return to reading, more than 100 free copies of the featured book are now available for pick up, while supplies last, at the Julius E. Sprauve Library. More copies will be available for loan from libraries throughout the Territory. Community members will be brought together through a variety of related activities from now through the middle of June.
UVI to Offer Free Seminars on Mango Production on St. Thomas and St. Croix
UVI's Cooperative Extension Service will conduct free seminars on how to manipulate mango tree flowering to produce maximum yield on St. Thomas on Jan. 25 and on St. Croix on Jan. 27. Dr. Thomas Davenport will be the presenter for all sessions.
Two sessions are planned on St. Thomas on Jan. 25. A 9 a.m. seminar - titled "Pruning Mango Trees for Maximum Yield" - will take place at the Cooperative Extension Services New House Building on UVI's St. Thomas campus and at the Charles Leonard farm in Bordeau. The second St. Thomas session, planned from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., is titled "Manipulating Mango Tree Flowering for Maximum Yield." It will take place at the Administration and Conference Center (formerly the Harvey Student Center) on UVI's St. Thomas campus. To pre-register on St. Thomas, contact Orpha Penn at 693-1080.

Spring Semester CLEP Test Dates Announced for St. Thomas Campus
UVI students are advised that the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) test dates for the Spring 2010 semester has been finalized on the St. Thomas campus. CLEP will be administered on Feb. 3, March 2, March 18, April 7 and April 19, 2010, in the CATS computer lab (CA Building Room 123).
Students can register for the test at the Office of Access and Enrollment Services' front desk, located on the first floor of the Administration and Conference Center. Test candidates must report to the test site no later than 9:30 a.m. on each test day with appropriate identification and form of payment. Acceptable forms of identification include a current driver's license, state or Federal ID, a current passport, tribal ID card, naturalization card or certificate of citizenship.
The cost associated with CLEP is $72 (payable to College Board) per test and an additional administrative fee of $15 (payable to UVI prior to the test date). Payment must be made in the form of check, money order, or credit card; cash will not be accepted. Students can email firstname.lastname@example.org for additional information.

Application Deadline for Dell Thurmond Woodard Fellowship is Feb. 15
UVI students are reminded that the deadline to apply for the Dell Thurmond Woodard Fellowship is Feb. 15, 2010. This scholarship is for students interested in technology, public policy, ethics and diversity. The Dell Thurmond Woodard Fellowship, which is part of the Eben Tisdale Fellowship, is a summer internship available to undergraduate and graduate students. This Fellowship offers a $5,000 grant for students to intern in Washington D.C., where the latest in technology meets the public policy arena.
The Dell Thurmond Woodard Fellowship was created in memory of the late Thurmond Woodard, Dell's former vice president of global diversity and chief ethics, privacy and compliance officer. The Summer 2010 Fellowship runs from June 14 through Aug. 6. The goal of the Fellowship is to create a supportive and collegial environment in which a new class of public policy professionals will be mentored to help ensure that the high-tech industry continues to have highly capable and well-trained individuals in both policy advocacy and senior management positions.

Americans with Disabilities Training Available on St. Croix, St. Thomas
Interested members of the UVI community are invited to participate in free Americans with Disabilities Act training opportunities scheduled on St. Croix and St. Thomas in January. The training is offered in association with Cornell University's Northeast ADA Center. Sessions are available on St. Croix on Jan. 25 and 26, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Carambola Beach Resort & Spa, and on St. Thomas on Jan. 28 and 29, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort.

Student Health Survey Results to be Presented to Staff and Students Jan. 28
Julie Sanem, MPH of Boynton Health Services of the University of Minnesota, will be presenting the results of the College Student Health Survey on Thursday, Jan. 28, to administrators, faculty and staff from noon to 1 p.m. in the first-floor conference room of UVI's Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. A presentation for students will take place from 1-2 p.m. in the same room.
The College Student Health Survey was the first comprehensive survey of UVI students that sought to understand their health status, health care coverage and utilization, emotional and mental health, personal safety, nutrition and physical activity, chemical health, and sexual health. The presentation will include the survey results, services offered by UVI Counseling and Health Services, how the data is used at other institutions and how it will be used at UVI.

Funeral Services Scheduled Jan. 26 for UVI Security Officer Emily Gumbs
Funeral services for St. Thomas campus Security Officer Emily Gumbs, who passed away during the holiday break, will take place at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 26, at Sts. Peter & Paul Cathedral. Interment will follow at the Western Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Davis Funeral Home. Visitation with the family at the funeral home is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Jan. 25, and from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on Jan. 26.
Preparations Underway for Inauguration of Dr. David Hall
The University of the Virgin Islands is preparing for the inauguration of UVI's fifth President, Dr. David Hall, on March 6, 2010. Members of the Inaugural Steering Committee and Inaugural subcommittees are finalizing the arrangements for events that will take place throughout the month of March, including Dr. Hall's Installation at the Reichhold Center for the Arts on March 6 at 6:30 p.m.

Agrifest 2010 Organizers to Vendors, Visitors: Plan Ahead
Organizers of the 39th St. Croix Agriculture and Food Fair are urging the public to make plans now to attend this year's fair scheduled for Feb. 13 to 15.
Vendors, farmers and exhibitors are being reminded that display space is in high demand for the largest fair of its kind in the Caribbean.

NSE Applications Available from Counseling Services Office
