UVI's Fall Semester Financial Aid Awards Letters Available to Students Online
UVI's Access and Enrollment Management and Financial Aid offices have announced that that financial aid awards letters for all fall semester students can be accessed via the University BUCSS (Banweb) online system. Students are requested to log into their account and review their information and respond accordingly. The login page is available from the Current Students/BUCSS tabs on the UVI home page - www.uvi.edu - and from this direct link.
This new process will facilitate immediate access to financial aid information and will expedite the disbursement process. Details of the new process, including login instructions for new users, were provided to students via email in June. Click here to see a copy of that information. Funds will not be disbursed on student accounts until they register for classes. Students are advised to contact the Financial Aid Office - St. Thomas (340) 693-1090 or St. Croix (340) 692-4145 - for further information or to share concerns regarding award letters.
Summer Music Camp Students Offer Three Remaining Public Concerts
Music enthusiasts have three remaining chances to experience performances by the 50 students attending the UVI Summer Music Camp on St. Thomas. Junior and senior high school students from St. Thomas, St. Croix, Antigua and Virgin Gorda are participating in the camp. The camp is under the direction of UVI Professor Austin A. Venzen, who has an assistant director and 13 counselors.
Two free, mid-day concerts are scheduled on July 21 and July 28 at Emancipation Garden in Charlotte Amalie. The concerts run from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. And, the camp will mark its conclusion with a performance of the children's opera "Hansel and Gretel" at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 24, (Note this is a day change from the previous Bulletin Board announcement.) at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts on the St. Thomas campus. General admission to the Reichhold Center opera performance is $10. Tickets will be available at the door.
UVI Today... Photo Blog Focuses on UVI Summer Activities

Participants of the Virgin Islands Writing Project (VIWP) Summer Institute held June 21 to July 13 on UVI's St. Thomas campus gathered for a group shot on the institute's last day. The VIWP is part of the National Writing Project which is designed to improve the teaching of writing in the nation's schools. A VIWP institute was also held on the St. Croix campus. Upward Bound... Fifty students who will enter the 10th, 11th and 12th grades in Virgin Islands schools this fall are participating in the 2010 Upward Bound Programs on UVI's St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses. The 25 students in the St. Thomas campus program gathered Monday, July 12, for a group photo. 4-H Summer Academies... 4-H Summer Academies are being run by UVI's Cooperative Extension Service on St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John. The academies are for children ages 5-14 and continue until Aug. 6.
CERC Extends Deadline Date for Abstracts for 2010 Health Disparities Institute
The deadline for the submission of abstracts for the 3rd Annual Health Disparities Institute has been extended to Aug. 15, 2010. The UVI School of Nursing's Caribbean Exploratory (NCMHD) Research Center of Excellence (CERC) will conduct the institute on Thursday, Oct. 21, and Friday Oct. 22, on St. Thomas at the Frenchman's Reef & Morning Star Beach Resort.
The Health Disparities Institute annually draws top local and national presenters. It is designed for local health and human services professionals, health policy leaders, criminal justice professionals, elected and appointed officials, educators, students, community leaders, concerned citizens, religious leaders and the media. Continuing Medical Education and Continuing Education Unit credits are available.

Biodiversity Film Fest Continues July 22 with 'State of the Ocean's Animals'
The 2010 Year of Biodiversity Film Fest on St. Croix continues on Thursday, July 22, with a free screening of the film "The State of the Ocean's Animals." The feature, which is a segment of the PBS series "Journey to Planet Earth," investigates why so many of our ocean's animals are disappearing. Case studies from Antarctica, Melbourne Beach, Fla., the Klamath River in California and Oregon, and Monterey Bay, Cal. focus on global issues including climate change, sea-level rise, over-fishing and habitat destruction. Award-winning filmmakers Marilyn and Hal Weiner produced the segment. It is narrated by Matt Damon. The screening is set for 6 p.m. in the UVI Theatre (Evans Center Room 401) on the University's St. Croix campus. Admission is free and no reservations are required. The festival is co-hosted by the St. Croix Environmental Association (SEA) and the University of the Virgin Islands.

St. Thomas/St. John Chapter Alumni to Host Recognition Breakfast July 24
The St. Thomas/St. John Chapter of the UVI Alumni Association will host its 8th Annual Breakfast Award Recognition ceremony at 8 a.m. on Saturday, July 24. The breakfast will take place in the UVI Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. This year's honorees are: Joss Springette ('00), Glendia Caines ('77, '87), Dion Wells ('03) and Cornell Williams ('82). Event proceeds will benefit the St. Thomas/St. John Chapter Scholarship Fund. Tickets cost $30 per person. Students to Present Work at Summer Research Symposium on July 30
UVI's College of Science and Mathematics will conduct the annual Summer Research Symposium from 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday, July 30, in the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. Approximately 36 summer undergraduate students who are participating in a variety of STEM - science, technology, engineering and mathematics - programs will showcase their interdisciplinary research projects.

Revised Tuition Remission Available Online
UVI's revised tuition remission form, used to enroll in classes for employees, their spouses and dependent children, is now available.
Employees are asked to take note of the following changes: Employees, spouses and dependent children must register on the last day established for registration without penalty, the Benefits Director will approve the form, and the employee MUST sign at the bottom of the form. For employees, tuition remission applies to three (3) undergraduate courses, (9 credits) per semester or two (2) graduate courses, (6 credits) per semester. Tuition Remission is not available for any course previously failed. A summary of the guidelines approved by the Board of Trustees is printed on the back of the form.
Forms are available in the Business Office on St. Croix and the Benefits Administration and Human Resources offices on St. Thomas. They are also available from the "Inside UVI" section of the UVI web site - www.uvi.edu - and from this direct link.

The University plans to utilize text messaging and email alerts as communication strategies for informing students, faculty and staff during the current hurricane season and in the event of other emergencies.
In order to participate in UVI's emergency text messaging system, all students, faculty and staff must have current cell phone and email address information included in the "Personal Information" section of their BanWeb accounts.

USVI Wage Reporting Seminar Scheduled for July 27 on St. Thomas
A USVI wage reporting seminar will be offered by the Social Security Administration and the Internal Revenue Service in collaboration with the VI Small Business Development Center on Tuesday, July 27. The seminar will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and take place at the SBDC Training Facility at Nisky Center on St. Thomas.
The seminar will cover electronic filing of form W-2VI, common errors and how to avoid them, the use and misuse of form W-2c for corrections, the Social Security Number Verification Service, and the use of form 941 and 941X, identifying employees versus independent contractors. For government entities the IRS will be present information on state and local compliance.

CELL Offering Free PRAXIS Tutorials for V.I. Teachers Through Aug. 31
UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVI-CELL) Center in collaboration with the V.I. Department of Education's Division of Human Resources is offering free Praxis I and II tutorials for public school teachers through Aug. 31. On St. Thomas, tutorial sessions are offered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday at the UVI-CELL Center. On St. Croix, the Math tutorial will be held 4 to 6 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, while the English tutorial will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Tutorials are offered in Room H200 of the St. Croix Educational Complex.
This free service is funded by the V.I. Department of Education. The tutorials prepare teachers for the Praxis I and II exams which allow them to be designated as highly qualified teachers in order to meet the mandates of the No Child Left Behind Act.
