Biodiversity Film Fest Continues Today with 'State of the Ocean's Animals'
The 2010 Year of Biodiversity Film Fest on St. Croix continues today (Thursday, July 22), with a free screening of the film "The State of the Ocean's Animals." The feature, which is a segment of the PBS series "Journey to Planet Earth," investigates why so many of our ocean's animals are disappearing. Case studies from Antarctica, Melbourne Beach, Fla., the Klamath River in California and Oregon, and Monterey Bay, Cal. focus on global issues including climate change, sea-level rise, over-fishing and habitat destruction. Award-winning filmmakers Marilyn and Hal Weiner produced the segment. It is narrated by Matt Damon. The screening is set for 6 p.m. in the UVI Theatre (Evans Center Room 401) on the University's St. Croix campus. Admission is free and no reservations are required. The festival is co-hosted by the St. Croix Environmental Association (SEA) and the University of the Virgin Islands.

St. Thomas/St. John Chapter Alumni to Host Recognition Breakfast July 24
The St. Thomas/St. John Chapter of the UVI Alumni Association will honor four members at the 8th Annual Breakfast Award Recognition ceremony set for 8 a.m. on Saturday, July 24. The breakfast will take place in the UVI Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. The honorees are: Joss Springette ('00), Glendia Caines ('77, '87), Dion Wells ('03) and Cornell Williams ('82). Event proceeds will benefit the St. Thomas/St. John Chapter Scholarship Fund. Tickets cost $30 per person. PRAXIS Exam to be Offered on St. Thomas Campus on July 24
The PRAXIS teacher certification exam will be administered in the Nursing Education Building on UVI's St. Thomas campus at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 24. Music Camp Students Offer Public Concerts on July 24 and July 28
Music enthusiasts have two remaining opportunities - on July 24 and 28 - to experience performances by the 50 students attending the UVI Summer Music Camp on St. Thomas. Junior and senior high school students from St. Thomas, St. Croix, Antigua and Virgin Gorda are participating in the camp. The camp is under the direction of UVI Professor Austin A. Venzen, who has an assistant director and 13 counselors.
The last in a series of free, mid-day concerts is scheduled on July 28, at Emancipation Garden in Charlotte Amalie. The concert will run from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
The camp will mark its conclusion with a performance of the children's opera "Hansel and Gretel" at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 24, (Note this is a day change from the previous Bulletin Board announcement.) at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts on the St. Thomas campus. General admission to the Reichhold Center opera performance is $10. Tickets will be available at the door.

UVI Staff Council to Host General Staff Meeting on July 27
The UVI Staff Council will host a General Meeting for all regular, professional and administrative staff members from 11 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, July 27. The videoconferenced meeting will take place in Evans Center Room 401 on the St. Croix campus and in the first-floor conference room of the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. All supervisors are asked to encourage their staff members to attend. The meeting will serve as an open forum designed to allow discussion of staff issues and concerns. A report on the recent UVI Staff Council Officers' Retreat will also be given. New Faculty Orientation, Fall Semester Faculty Convocation Dates Announced
UVI's Office of the Provost has announced dates for the University's New Faculty Orientation and the 2010 Fall Semester Faculty Convocation. The New Faculty Orientation is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 19 and 20. The orientation sessions will take place at the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. The Fall Semester Faculty Convocation is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 20. The convocation will be videoconferenced between the campuses with access available in Evans Center Room 401 on St. Croix and in Chase Auditorium (B-110) on St. Thomas. UVI's Fall Semester Financial Aid Awards Letters Available to Students Online
UVI's Access and Enrollment Management and Financial Aid offices have announced that financial aid awards letters for all fall semester students can be accessed via the University BUCSS (Banweb) online system. Students are requested to log into their account and review their information and respond accordingly. The login page is available from the Current Students/BUCSS tabs on the UVI home page - www.uvi.edu - and from this direct link.
This new process will facilitate immediate access to financial aid information and will expedite the disbursement process. Details of the new process, including login instructions for new users, were provided to students via email in June. Click here to see a copy of that information. Funds will not be disbursed on student accounts until they register for classes. CERC Extends Deadline Date for Abstracts for 2010 Health Disparities Institute
The deadline for the submission of abstracts for the 3rd Annual Health Disparities Institute has been extended to Aug. 15, 2010. The UVI School of Nursing's Caribbean Exploratory (NCMHD) Research Center of Excellence (CERC) will conduct the institute on Thursday, Oct. 21, and Friday Oct. 22, on St. Thomas at the Frenchman's Reef & Morning Star Beach Resort.
The Health Disparities Institute annually draws top local and national presenters. It is designed for local health and human services professionals, health policy leaders, criminal justice professionals, elected and appointed officials, educators, students, community leaders, concerned citizens, religious leaders and the media. Continuing Medical Education and Continuing Education Unit credits are available.

Students to Present Work at Summer Research Symposium on July 30
UVI's College of Science and Mathematics will conduct the annual Summer Research Symposium from 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday, July 30, in the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. Approximately 36 summer undergraduate students who are participating in a variety of STEM - science, technology, engineering and mathematics - programs will showcase their interdisciplinary research projects.

USVI Wage Reporting Seminar Scheduled for July 27 on St. Thomas
A USVI wage reporting seminar will be offered by the Social Security Administration and the Internal Revenue Service in collaboration with the VI Small Business Development Center on Tuesday, July 27. The seminar will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and take place at the SBDC Training Facility at Nisky Center on St. Thomas.
The seminar will cover electronic filing of form W-2VI, common errors and how to avoid them, the use and misuse of form W-2c for corrections, the Social Security Number Verification Service, and the use of form 941 and 941X, identifying employees versus independent contractors. For government entities the IRS will be present information on state and local compliance.

CELL to Host Workshops on Writing Business Plans on Aug. 11
UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVI-CELL) Center will host one-day workshops on St. Thomas and St. Croix designed to help individuals achieve effective business planning. The How to Write a Business Plan workshops are scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 11. On St. Thomas, the workshop will be held at the UVI-CELL Center on the St. Thomas campus. On St. Croix, it will be held at the Joseph A. Simpson Building, #23A Hospital Street in Frederiksted.
The workshop is part of a series being offered by UVI-CELL in conjunction with the American Management Association. Participants will learn how to evaluate a company's capabilities, strengths and weaknesses, pinpoint crucial elements of the environment, set realistic goals and objectives, and implement the plan successfully.

CELL Offering Free PRAXIS Tutorials for V.I. Teachers Through Aug. 31
UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVI-CELL) Center in collaboration with the V.I. Department of Education's Division of Human Resources is offering free Praxis I and II tutorials for public school teachers through Aug. 31. On St. Thomas, tutorial sessions are offered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday at the UVI-CELL Center. On St. Croix, the Math tutorial will be held 4 to 6 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, while the English tutorial will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Tutorials are offered in Room H200 of the St. Croix Educational Complex.
This free service is funded by the V.I. Department of Education. The tutorials prepare teachers for the Praxis I and II exams which allow them to be designated as highly qualified teachers in order to meet the mandates of the No Child Left Behind Act.
