Meetings with CEA Candidates Continue

Campus community meetings with finalists for UVI's Campus Executive Administrator positions continue as follows:

Today - Thursday, June 17 - St. Croix CEA candidate Dr. Thomas Corti will visit with the campus community in an open session from 3:05 p.m. until 4:15 p.m. in Room 103 of the Northwest Wing.

An open session has been scheduled with St. Croix CEA candidate Nereida Washington on Friday, June 18, from 1:30 p.m. until 2:25 p.m. in Room 103 of the Northwest Wing.

HIV Testing Day Offered Today - June 17 - on St. Thomas Campus

UVI's St. Thomas campus Health Services will host free HIV screenings in observance of National and Caribbean HIV Testing Day, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., today (Thursday, June 17), in the UVI Bookstore parking lot. Screening services will be provided by HOPE Inc. The entire UVI community - students, staff and faculty - is invited to be screened. Health Services Supervisor Ronda Herbert guarantees confidentiality. There will be free giveaways. For more information call Student Health Services at 693-1124.

Aquaponics Course Underway on St. Croix with Record-breaking 92 Participants

Participants in the week-long, 12th Annual International Aquaponics and Tilapia Aquaculture Course taught at the University of the Virgin Islands have begun attending classes on UVI's St. Croix campus. According to Dr. James Rakocy, director of UVI's Agricultural Experiment Station, a record 92 participants from 21 states, 18 countries and three U.S. territories have signed up for the one-week program. UVI to Field Two Relay for Life Teams; Donations, Support Sought

The University of the Virgin Islands St. Thomas campus will field two teams in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, scheduled for June 26-27, at the Charlotte Amalie High School Track. While both team rosters are full, organizers are still seeking assistance in meeting the minimum required contribution of $1,500 per team. Contributions can be credited to individual team members or to the overall UVI effort. The teams can also use supporters to help set up and take down their base tent and to stock it with beverages and food for the all-night event. Moral support throughout the Relay is always welcome. Eighth UVI Alumni Award Recognition Breakfast Set July 24 on St. Thomas

The Eighth Annual UVI Alumni Award Recognition Breakfast is scheduled for 8 a.m. on Saturday, July 24, at the Administration & Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. Details will be announced as they become available. Event proceeds will be used to support the St. Thomas/St. John Chapter Scholarship Fund. Tickets cost $30 per person.

Trustees Sussman Donates $1 Million to UVI; Tuition Remission Policy Approved

University of the Virgin Islands Trustee S. Donald Sussman has donated $1 million toward the construction of a new science building on UVI's St. Thomas campus. UVI President David Hall announced Sussman's donation while delivering the President's Report to the UVI Board of Trustees at its quarterly meeting on the St. Croix campus on Saturday, June 12. Sussman also recently issued a matching gift challenge, pledging to match first-time donations to the University of $100 or more, up to a maximum of $100,000. UVI Summer Music Camp Slated June 23 to July 30 on St. Thomas Campus

The University of the Virgin Islands' Summer Music Camp - a five-and-one-half-week, comprehensive music camp for junior and senior high school students - is scheduled to run from June 23 through July 30, at the Music Education Building on the University's St. Thomas campus. The camp, for students ages 12 to 17, will operate on Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.

Organized by UVI's Music Area, the camp is under the direction of Prof. Austin A. Venzen, and funded in part by the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Law Enforcement Planning Commission and the Department of Human Services. Biodiversity Film Fest Continues June 24 on St. Croix with 'State of the Planet'

The 2010 Year of Biodiversity Film Fest continues this Thursday, June 24, with a free screening of "The State of the Planet." In the presentation, which is part of the PBS "Journey to Planet Earth" series, filmmakers investigate the health and sustainability of the world's oceans, with a special emphasis on climate change and issues affecting marine reserves, fisheries and coastal ecosystems. The film was produced by award-winning filmmakers Marilyn and Hal Weiner. It is narrated by Matt Damon. The screening is set for 6 p.m. in the UVI Theatre, Evans Center Room 401, on the University's St. Croix campus. Admission is free and no reservations are required. The festival is co-hosted by the St. Croix Environmental Association (SEA) and the University of the Virgin Islands. It continues on July 22, with "State of the Planet's Animals," another film from the PBS series "Exploring Planet Earth."

The University of The University of the Virgin Islands will be accepting sealed bids which can be picked up from the Purchasing Department starting June 16, 2010, through June 29, 2010, between the hours of 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday for the items noted below:

USVI Census 2010 Poster Available at UVI Bookstores

Copies of the official USVI Census 2010 poster are now available for free at the UVI Bookstores on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses. The poster - titled "It's In Our Hands" - features a traditional Virgin Islands scene painted by artist Max Johnson.

UVI Staff Council Seeks Nominations to Fill Upcoming Positions

The University of the Virgin Islands Staff Council (UVISC) is seeking nominations from regular, professional and administrative staff for upcoming positions on the UVISC, the UVI Budget Committee and the UVI Senate.

The following positions will be available on the UVISC: Chair, Secretary, Regular Staff Rep STX, Professional Staff Rep STT, Administrative Staff Rep STX, Chair -Communications Committee, Chair - Nomination Committee, UVI Senate (one opening available).

Summer Jobs Available Through UVI 4-H Program

Summer jobs are available for UVI's 4-H Program on St. Thomas and St. Croix. Interested students, teachers or people in the area of youth development or education from ages 15 and up can apply online for available positions of the UVI 4-H Summer Program. Students to Present Work at Summer Research Symposium on July 30

UVI's College of Science and Mathematics will conduct the annual Summer Research Symposium from 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday, July 30, in the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. Approximately 36 summer undergraduate students who are participating in a variety of STEM - science, technology, engineering and mathematics - programs will showcase their interdisciplinary research projects.

UVI Seeks Applicants for Psychology Master's Degree Program

UVI is seeking applicants for a new graduate program in psychology, which was approved by the UVI Board of Trustees in March. While the University's application deadline for graduate programs was officially April 30, the deadline for the Master of Arts in Psychology with a Counseling Concentration program has been extended until all of the allotted slots in the program are filled. The program seeks to enroll 15 students on the St. Thomas campus and 15 students on the St. Croix campus for the Fall 2010 semester.

Title III's Annual Newsletter Available On-line

The latest edition of 'Title III Impact,' the annual newsletter of UVI's Office of Sponsored Programs - Title III, is published and available online. In the featured story the Foundation for the University of the Virgin Islands assumes management responsibilities for the Title III endowment. Other stories take a look at projects funded through Title III, including upgrades to the St. Thomas campus Biology Lab, the installation of 'Smart Classrooms' on both campuses and the upgrade of the instructional sea vessel Willie Mac. UVI 2009-2010 Fact Book Available On-line

UVI's Office of Institutional Research and Planning has announced that the completed 2009-2010 UVI Fact Book is now available on-line. The UVI Fact Book contains information regarding enrollment for both fall 2009 and spring 2010. This information is presented, in a variety of ways, so that relative information by campus, gender and class are available. In addition, historical enrollment, admissions, SAT scores, degrees conferred, course enrollment, faculty characteristics, tuition and fees, 2008 UVI financial statement, facilities, and current peer institutions are also available. Federal Pell Grant, Direct Loan Programs Offer Funds for Summer School

UVI students who are 2009-2010 financial aid recipients and who need money for summer school are advised to visit the University's Financial Aid Offices to determine if they are eligible for the New Year Round Federal Pell Grant or Direct Loan programs. Information and application forms for the programs are available from the Financial Aid Section (Applying for Aid/Summer Aid tab) of the UVI web site - www.uvi.edu - or this direct link.

To be eligible, students need to meet these requirements:

Have a valid financial aid application on file for 2009-2010 aid year.

Have remaining financial aid from the 2009-2010 aid year.

Have met all Federal and University of the Virgin Islands eligibility requirements.

If registering for both summer sessions, financial aid eligibility will be determined based on combined enrollment. Any changes in a student's enrollment status during the summer term can result in the Federal Pell Grant or Direct Loan being reduced or cancelled. A minimum of six credits are required for Direct Loan eligibility. Financial Aid Summer Payment Authorization to accept your charges will commence on May 7, 2010. The UVI Cashier's Offices are open from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

CELL Notes...

CELL Offers Free PRAXIS Tutorials for V.I. Teachers

UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVI-CELL) Center in collaboration with the V.I. Department of Education's Division of Human Resources is offering free Praxis I and II tutorials for public school teachers.

The tutorials, which began in May, will continue through August 31. On St. Thomas, tutorial sessions offered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday until August 31, at the UVI-CELL Center on the St. Thomas campus. On St. Croix, the Math tutorial will be held 4 to 6 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, while the English tutorial will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Tutorials are offered in Room H200 of the St. Croix Educational Complex.

This free service is funded by the V.I. Department of Education. The tutorials prepare teachers for the Praxis I and II exams which allow them to be designated as highly qualified teachers in order to meet the mandates of the No Child Left Behind Act.

CELL Course in Teaching American History Continue

UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVI-CELL) Center has issued a reminder to students registered in its Teaching American History course that the next session is scheduled for the week of June 21. Classes are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the UVI-CELL Center on the St. Thomas campus and in North West Wing Room 103 on the St. Croix campus.

The featured visiting instructors are Professor Richard Blackett of the Gilder Lehrman Institute and Vanderbilt University and Professor Aaron Willis of Social Studies Services. SBDC Notes...

USVI Wage Reporting Seminar Scheduled for July 27 on St. Thomas

A USVI wage reporting seminar will be offered by the Social Security Administration and the Internal Revenue Service in collaboration with the VI Small Business Development Center on Tuesday, July 27. The seminar will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and take place at the SBDC Training Facility at Nisky Center on St. Thomas.

The seminar will cover electronic filing of form W-2VI, common errors and how to avoid them, the use and misuse of form W-2c for corrections, the Social Security Number Verification Service, and the use of form 941 and 941X, identifying employees versus independent contractors. For government entities the IRS will be present information on state and local compliance.
