Retirement Luncheon, Scholarship Fundraiser to Honor Dr. Ron Harrigan

A celebration of the contributions of Dr. Ronald Harrigan to the University of the Virgin Islands is scheduled for noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 27, at the Wyndham Sugar Bay Beach Resort on St. Thomas. Interested persons should purchase tickets on or before Tuesday, June 22.

The afternoon will feature a retirement luncheon and scholarship fundraiser in the name of Dr. Harrigan, the Interim Dean of UVI's School of Education, who is retiring following a career spanning more than 40 years at the University, where he began as a student in 1965.

Tickets are $45 for adults and $25 for children 12 and under, and are available at the UVI Bookstore, the Reichhold Center for the Arts, Urban Threadz in Buccaneer Mall, Essentric Shoe Boutique, VI Bridal & Tuxedo, Home Again, Fashion Source in Tutu Park Mall and International Records & Tapes on Back Street. Proceeds from the luncheon will go toward the VI University Sports Federation, Inc. Scholarship Program.

UVI Fielding Two Relay for Life Teams; Donations, Support Sought

Two teams representing UVI will participate in this weekend's (June 26-27) American Cancer Society Relay for Life on St. Thomas. While team rosters are full, organizers are still seeking assistance in meeting the minimum required contribution of $1,500 per team. Contributions can be credited to individual team members or to the overall UVI effort. The teams can also use supporters to help set up and take down their base tent and to stock it with beverages and food for the all-night event. Moral support throughout the Relay is always welcome. Placement tests in English and Mathematics are scheduled by the University of the Virgin Islands on both campuses on Tuesday, June 22.

Research and Technology Park Board to Meet June 21

UVI Summer Music Camp Slated June 23 to July 30 on St. Thomas Campus

The University of the Virgin Islands' Summer Music Camp - a five-and-one-half-week, comprehensive music camp for junior and senior high school students - is scheduled to run from June 23 through July 30, at the Music Education Building on the University's St. Thomas campus. The camp, for students ages 12 to 17, will operate on Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.

Organized by UVI's Music Area, the camp is under the direction of Prof. Austin A. Venzen, and funded in part by the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Law Enforcement Planning Commission and the Department of Human Services. Biodiversity Film Fest Continues June 24 on St. Croix with 'State of the Planet'

The 2010 Year of Biodiversity Film Fest continues this Thursday, June 24, with a free screening of "The State of the Planet." In the presentation, which is part of the PBS "Journey to Planet Earth" series, filmmakers investigate the health and sustainability of the world's oceans, with a special emphasis on climate change and issues affecting marine reserves, fisheries and coastal ecosystems. The film was produced by award-winning filmmakers Marilyn and Hal Weiner. It is narrated by Matt Damon. The screening is set for 6 p.m. in the UVI Theatre, Evans Center Room 401, on the University's St. Croix campus. Admission is free and no reservations are required. The festival is co-hosted by the St. Croix Environmental Association (SEA) and the University of the Virgin Islands. It continues on July 22, with "State of the Planet's Animals," another film from the PBS series "Exploring Planet Earth."

UVI Offering Vehicles for Sale on St. Thomas Campus

The University of The University of the Virgin Islands will be accepting sealed bids which can be picked up from the Purchasing Department starting June 16, 2010, through June 29, 2010, between the hours of 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday for the items noted below:

USVI Census 2010 Poster Available at UVI Bookstores

Copies of the official USVI Census 2010 poster are now available for free at the UVI Bookstores on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses. The poster - titled "It's In Our Hands" - features a traditional Virgin Islands scene painted by artist Max Johnson.

Eighth UVI Alumni Award Recognition Breakfast Set July 24 on St. Thomas

The Eighth Annual UVI Alumni Award Recognition Breakfast is scheduled for 8 a.m. on Saturday, July 24, at the Administration & Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. Details will be announced as they become available. Event proceeds will be used to support the St. Thomas/St. John Chapter Scholarship Fund. Tickets cost $30 per person.

Students to Present Work at Summer Research Symposium on July 30

UVI's College of Science and Mathematics will conduct the annual Summer Research Symposium from 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday, July 30, in the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. Approximately 36 summer undergraduate students who are participating in a variety of STEM - science, technology, engineering and mathematics - programs will showcase their interdisciplinary research projects.

Federal Pell Grant, Direct Loan Programs Offer Funds for Summer School

UVI students who are 2009-2010 financial aid recipients and who need money for summer school are advised to visit the University's Financial Aid Offices to determine if they are eligible for the New Year Round Federal Pell Grant or Direct Loan programs. Information and application forms for the programs are available from the Financial Aid Section (Applying for Aid/Summer Aid tab) of the UVI web site - www.uvi.edu - or this direct link.

To be eligible, students need to meet these requirements:

Have a valid financial aid application on file for 2009-2010 aid year.

Have remaining financial aid from the 2009-2010 aid year.

Have met all Federal and University of the Virgin Islands eligibility requirements.

If registering for both summer sessions, financial aid eligibility will be determined based on combined enrollment. Any changes in a student's enrollment status during the summer term can result in the Federal Pell Grant or Direct Loan being reduced or cancelled. A minimum of six credits are required for Direct Loan eligibility. Financial Aid Summer Payment Authorization to accept your charges will commence on May 7, 2010. The UVI Cashier's Offices are open from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Title III's Annual Newsletter Available On-line

The latest edition of 'Title III Impact,' the annual newsletter of UVI's Office of Sponsored Programs - Title III, is published and available online. In the featured story the Foundation for the University of the Virgin Islands assumes management responsibilities for the Title III endowment. Other stories take a look at projects funded through Title III, including upgrades to the St. Thomas campus Biology Lab, the installation of 'Smart Classrooms' on both campuses and the upgrade of the instructional sea vessel Willie Mac. It also features an Informational Corner, which answers frequently asked questions. UVI 2009-2010 Fact Book Available On-line

UVI's Office of Institutional Research and Planning has announced that the completed 2009-2010 UVI Fact Book is now available on-line. The UVI Fact Book contains information regarding enrollment for both fall 2009 and spring 2010. This information is presented, in a variety of ways, so that relative information by campus, gender and class are available. In addition, historical enrollment, admissions, SAT scores, degrees conferred, course enrollment, faculty characteristics, tuition and fees, 2008 UVI financial statement, facilities, and current peer institutions are also available. CELL Notes...

CELL Offers Free PRAXIS Tutorials for V.I. Teachers

UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVI-CELL) Center in collaboration with the V.I. Department of Education's Division of Human Resources is offering free Praxis I and II tutorials for public school teachers through August 31. On St. Thomas, tutorial sessions are offered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday at the UVI-CELL Center. On St. Croix, the Math tutorial will be held 4 to 6 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, while the English tutorial will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Tutorials are offered in Room H200 of the St. Croix Educational Complex.

This free service is funded by the V.I. Department of Education. The tutorials prepare teachers for the Praxis I and II exams which allow them to be designated as highly qualified teachers in order to meet the mandates of the No Child Left Behind Act.

USVI Wage Reporting Seminar Scheduled for July 27 on St. Thomas

A USVI wage reporting seminar will be offered by the Social Security Administration and the Internal Revenue Service in collaboration with the VI Small Business Development Center on Tuesday, July 27. The seminar will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and take place at the SBDC Training Facility at Nisky Center on St. Thomas.

The seminar will cover electronic filing of form W-2VI, common errors and how to avoid them, the use and misuse of form W-2c for corrections, the Social Security Number Verification Service, and the use of form 941 and 941X, identifying employees versus independent contractors. For government entities the IRS will be present information on state and local compliance.
