St. Croix Campus Community Invited to Meet CEA Candidate Claude Steele

Dr. Claude Steele, a finalist in the search for a Campus Executive Administrator (CEA) for the St. Croix campus, will visit St. Croix on Thursday, July 1, 2010. The entire St. Croix campus community is invited to participate in the interview process during the Open Session from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 1, 2010, in the North West Wing, Room 103. UVI Relay for Life Teams Raise $3,000 for American Cancer Society

Congratulations to UVI's 2010 Relay for Life teams - and to their supporters - who raised more than $3,000 during the American Cancer Society's fundraiser held June 26-27 on St. Thomas. UVI to Observe Emancipation Day, Independence Day Holidays on July 2 and 5

The University of the Virgin Islands will be closed on Friday, July 2, and Monday, July 5, in observance of the Virgin Islands Emancipation Day and Independence Day holidays, respectively. Summer Session II classes will resume and UVI administrative offices will re-open on their regular schedules on Tuesday, July 6.

UVI Summer Music Camp Students Announce Public Concert Schedule

Students attending the UVI Summer Music Camp will perform a series of five, free mid-day concerts at Emancipation Garden on St. Thomas beginning Wednesday, June 30. The concerts, which will be presented from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. each Wednesday, will continue through July 28. Junior and senior high school students from St. Thomas, St. Croix, Antigua and Virgin Gorda are participating in the camp. UVI Professor Austin A. Venzen is the camp director. Prof. Venzen said campers have also committed to sharing the love of music with ensemble performances each Sunday at local churches. The students also plan a special July 4th concert with the V.I. National Guard's 73rd Army Band at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 4, at Emancipation Garden. The camp will mark its conclusion with a performance of the children's opera "Hansel and Gretel" at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, July 23, at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts on the University's St. Thomas campus.

UVI Summer Camp Musicians to Perform with 73rd Army Band on July 4

Young musicians participating in the UVI Summer Music Camp will perform with the 73rd Army Band of the Virgin Islands National Guard at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 4, at Emancipation Garden on St. Thomas. The concert is free and open to the public. It is sponsored in part by the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts, the Law Enforcement Planning Commission, the Prior Family Foundation and American Legion Post 90.

UVI Community Contact Information Needed for Emergency Messaging

The University plans to utilize text messaging and email alerts as communication strategies for informing students, faculty and staff during the current hurricane season and in the event of other emergencies.

In order to participate in UVI's emergency text messaging system, all students, faculty and staff must have current cell phone and email address information included in the "Personal Information" section of their BanWeb accounts.

Tuition Remission, Tuition Exchange Programs Detailed

An outline of changes to UVI's Tuition Remission Program and details of the University's new Tuition Exchange Program - approved at the June 12 Board of Trustees meeting - have been distributed to faculty and staff via email. Fall 2010 New Student Orientation Schedules Available Online

UVI's Fall Semester 2010 new student orientation schedules have been published and are available from the Admissions section of the UVI web site - www.uvi.edu - and from this direct link. Orientation activities are scheduled for the week of Aug. 15. Fall Semester 2010 classes will begin on Monday, Aug. 23.

Dateline: UVI Spotlights $1M Donation, Retiring Dean Dr. Ronald Harrigan

The June edition of the monthly newsletter Dateline: UVI spotlights the recent $1 million donation by UVI trustee and businessman S. Donald Sussman. The donation is to be used toward the construction of a new science building on the St. Thomas campus. Trustee Sussman said he hopes this donation will serve as a "lead gift" to spur other contributions that will be needed to support the University's recently announced plans to construct new buildings on St. Thomas and St. Croix. Also featured is an interview with the Interim Dean of UVI's School of Education Dr. Ronald Harrigan, who is retiring after 38 years of working at the University. Printed copies of Dateline: UVI are distributed to University offices. ITS June 2010 Newsletter Now Available Online

UVI's Information & Technology Services has published the June 2010 issue of the ITS Newsletter. The eight-page publication, distributed via email and posted to the ITS section of the UVI web site - www.uvi.edu, features numerous updates including reviews of the planned rollout of the myCampus web portal, work on the inter-island microwave link and renovation schedules for the St. Croix and St. Thomas libraries. Also included is an overview of student email communication policy and gmail changes approved by the UVI Senate on Friday, May 14. UVI Offering Vehicles for Sale on St. Thomas Campus

The University of The University of the Virgin Islands will be accepting sealed bids which can be picked up from the Purchasing Department starting June 16, 2010, through June 29, 2010, between the hours of 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday for the items noted below:

A. One (1) ea. 1994 Toyota Truck Automatic (Color: White)

B. One (1) ea. 2003 Chevy Tracker Automatic (Color: White)

C. One (1) ea. 1997 Chevy S10 Automatic (Color: Brown)

D. One (1) ea. 2007 Ford Ranger Automatic (Color: White)

Vehicles are located at the Physical Plant building on the St. Thomas campus. Items will be sold AS IS. Only sealed bids will be accepted for the purchase of these items. Bid submission must be delivered to the University of the Virgin Islands-St. Thomas campus Purchasing Office no later than 3 p.m., on Wednesday, June 30, 2010. Students to Present Work at Summer Research Symposium on July 30

UVI's College of Science and Mathematics will conduct the annual Summer Research Symposium from 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday, July 30, in the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. Approximately 36 summer undergraduate students who are participating in a variety of STEM - science, technology, engineering and mathematics - programs will showcase their interdisciplinary research projects.

UVI 2009-2010 Fact Book Available On-line

UVI's Office of Institutional Research and Planning has announced that the completed 2009-2010 UVI Fact Book is now available on-line. The UVI Fact Book contains information regarding enrollment for both fall 2009 and spring 2010. This information is presented, in a variety of ways, so that relative information by campus, gender and class are available.  In addition, historical enrollment, admissions, SAT scores, degrees conferred, course enrollment, faculty characteristics, tuition and fees, 2008 UVI financial statement, facilities, and current peer institutions are also available.  The UVI Fact Book can be accessed from the Office of Institutional Research and Planning page of the UVI website www.uvi.edu or from this direct link.

CELL Notes...

Grammar, Proofreading Course Offered on St. Thomas, St. Croix on July 14

UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center will host a one-day refresher course for individuals who wish to enhance their writing skills on St. Thomas and St. Croix. The Grammar and Proofreading Refresher Course is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, July 14. On St. Thomas, the workshop will be held at the UVI-CELL Center. On St. Croix, the course will take place at the Joseph A. Simpson Building, #23A Hospital Street in Frederiksted, St. Croix.

The workshop is part of a series being offered by UVI's CELL Center in conjunction with the American Management Association (AMA). Participants will learn to overcome writing problems, revisit the rules of grammar, write clearly, produce error-free documents and proofread for clarity.

CELL Offering Free PRAXIS Tutorials for V.I. Teachers Through Aug. 31

UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVI-CELL) Center in collaboration with the V.I. Department of Education's Division of Human Resources is offering free Praxis I and II tutorials for public school teachers through Aug. 31. On St. Thomas, tutorial sessions are offered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday at the UVI-CELL Center. On St. Croix, the Math tutorial will be held 4 to 6 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, while the English tutorial will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Tutorials are offered in Room H200 of the St. Croix Educational Complex.

This free service is funded by the V.I. Department of Education. The tutorials prepare teachers for the Praxis I and II exams which allow them to be designated as highly qualified teachers in order to meet the mandates of the No Child Left Behind Act.

SBDC Notes...

USVI Wage Reporting Seminar Scheduled for July 27 on St. Thomas

A USVI wage reporting seminar will be offered by the Social Security Administration and the Internal Revenue Service in collaboration with the VI Small Business Development Center on Tuesday, July 27. The seminar will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and take place at the SBDC Training Facility at Nisky Center on St. Thomas.

The seminar will cover electronic filing of form W-2VI, common errors and how to avoid them, the use and misuse of form W-2c for corrections, the Social Security Number Verification Service, and the use of form 941 and 941X, identifying employees versus independent contractors. For government entities the IRS will be present information on state and local compliance.
