UVI Commencement Set for May 15 & 16
UVI will conduct its 46th Annual Commencement Ceremonies May 15 and 16, on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses, respectively. On St. Thomas the ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 15, in the Sports and Fitness Center. On St. Croix the ceremony will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 16, on the campus grounds.
The class speaker on the St. Thomas campus will be Jaedee S.K. Caines. The class speaker on the St. Croix campus will be Carmie K. Thompson. The class speakers are selected by members of their class. UVI Seeks Applicants for Psychology Master's Degree Program
UVI is seeking applicants for a new graduate program in psychology, which was approved by the UVI Board of Trustees in March. While the University's application deadline for graduate programs is officially April 30, the deadline for the Master of Arts in Psychology with a Counseling Concentration program has been extended until all of the allotted slots in the program are filled. The program seeks to enroll 15 students on the St. Thomas campus and 15 students on the St. Croix campus for the Fall 2010 semester.

Career Services Surveying UVI's 2010 Graduating Class
All members of UVI's 2010 graduating class are asked to complete a Career Services Exit Survey prepared by the University's Career Services Office. Students must complete this confidential survey and submit when collecting their tickets for graduation. Proposal Writing and Post-Award Grant Management Seminar Set May 12
UVI's Office of Sponsored Programs and the Controller's Office will offer a proposal writing and post-award grant management seminar from 2:45 to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 12. This session will cover proposal writing and project implementation at UVI. Special emphasis will be given to the internal review process and changes in University procedures that impact on externally-sponsored projects. The seminar will be available, via videoconference, in Business Administration Room 101 on the St. Thomas campus and in Room 103 of the North West Wing on the St. Croix campus. UVI Libraries to Observe Intersession Hours May 10-14
UVI's Information Technology Services has announced that the University's libraries will observe intersession hours from today (Monday, May 10) through Friday, May 14. During this period UVI Libraries will operate during the following hours from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The libraries will be closed on Saturday, May 15 and Sunday, May 16. Regular hours will resume at 8 a.m. on Monday, May 17. All student computer labs will be closed for maintenance during intersession. UVI's Two-Year Academic Calendar Now Online; Summer Session I Begins May 17
UVI's Academic Calendar for 2010 through 2012 is now available online. Links to the two-year Academic Calendar are available from the Academics, Admissions and Provost's sections of the UVI web site - www.uvi.edu. The calendar is also available from this direct link. UVI's 2010 Summer Session I classes are slated to begin on May 17. Online registration continues through May 12 with in-office registration slated for May 13 and 14.
Scholarships Available for Advanced Degrees, Cultural Projects; Deadline May 14
Virgin Islands residents pursuing advanced degrees are encouraged to apply for the VI Academic & Cultural Awards Endowment Scholarship. Funding is also available for VI residents conducting research and projects designed to promote cultural awareness in the territory. Recipients may receive up to $10,000 per year. Twenty-one scholarships were awarded for the 2009-2010 period, totaling $207,000.

UVI Sponsoring 'Today in VI History' On WSTA
On Monday, May 3, the University began sponsorship of a 12-month radio program on WSTA called "Today in VI History."
The University's brand name and slogan messages will be featured more than 500 time on the daily radio feature that will highlight the significant personalities, places, accomplishments and events that have shaped the territory's four islands for the past 517 years. Other sponsors include MSI, First Bank, Guardian Insurance and the West Indian Company Limited.
"Today in Virgin Islands History" will air daily on WSTA Radio between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m., Monday through Friday.
Harrigan Memorial Scholarship Offered to Children of British Virgin Islanders
The League of British Virgin Islanders of St. Thomas-St. John is accepting applications for its 2010 Norwell Harrigan Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship offers $1,500 per year, for two years, for a student attending either UVI campus.
To qualify, students must:
be the child of at least one British Virgin Islander
be a former graduate or a prospective graduate of either the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College or any secondary school or secondary department in the British Virgin Islands
be either accepted for admission by or already enrolled in any program at the University of the Virgin Islands

Placement Test Notes...
UVI Math Placement Test Slated for May 11 on Both Campuses
UVI's next Mathematics Diagnostic and Placement Test will be administered from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 11, on both campuses. The St. Thomas venue will be Classroom Administration Building Room 307. On St. Croix, the test will be offered in these locations: Q-100 and R-100.
Incoming UVI students who scored below 490 on the SAT-Math test must take the Math Placement test before starting their first semester classes. The test is designed to place students in the courses that best meet their needs. Student information on how to prepare for the test is available from this web link: Show them you know some math!
UVI English Placement Test Slated for May 12 on Both Campuses
UVI's English Placement tests are scheduled for 4 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 12, on both the St. Thomas and the St. Croix campuses. The English 100 (essay) test will be offered from 4 to 5:15 p.m., and the English 101 (reading) test will be from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m.
On the St. Thomas campus, testing will take place in Sports and Fitness Center, Room 222, unless otherwise notified. On the St. Croix campus, testing will be held in Q-100 and R-100, unless otherwise notified.
Individuals taking the tests should bring two pens, with blue or black ink, and picture identification.
Federal Pell Grant, Direct Loan Programs Offer Funds for Summer School
UVI students who are 2009-2010 financial aid recipients and who need money for summer school are advised to visit the University's Financial Aid Offices to determine if they are eligible for the New Year Round Federal Pell Grant or Direct Loan programs. Information and application forms for the programs are available from the Financial Aid Section (Applying for Aid/Summer Aid tab) of the UVI web site - www.uvi.edu - or this direct link.
To be eligible, students need to meet these requirements:
Have a valid financial aid application on file for 2009-2010 aid year.
Have remaining financial aid from the 2009-2010 aid year.
Have met all Federal and University of the Virgin Islands eligibility requirements.
If registering for both summer sessions, financial aid eligibility will be determined based on combined enrollment. Any changes in a student's enrollment status during the summer term can result in the Federal Pell Grant or Direct Loan being reduced or cancelled. A minimum of six credits are required for Direct Loan eligibility. Financial Aid Summer Payment Authorization to accept your charges will commence on May 7, 2010. The UVI Cashier's Offices are open from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

SBDC Seminar to Focus on Innovation in Business on May 12 on St. Thomas
A seminar focusing on the importance of innovation in small businesses will be offered by UVI's VI Small Business Development Center from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 12, at the SBDC Training Facility in Nisky Center on St. Thomas. Stavros Michailidis, who holds a master's degree in creative studies and a graduate certificate for Creativity and Change Leadership from the State University of New York's College at Buffalo, will be the seminar presenter. He founded the company Starvos-CM, which offers innovation training, facilitation and outsourcing. The aspects of innovation in business to be covered include: the traits of an innovative product, the behaviors of innovators, the cultures of innovative organizations and how to foster them, and the systematic steps of the innovation process. St. Thomas/St. John Awards Ceremony to Highlight VI Small Business Week
UVI's VI Small Business Development Center will host its annual St. Thomas/St. John Awards Ceremony from 8 a.m. to noon on Friday, June 4, at the Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort and Spa. The ceremony will highlight the observance of Virgin Islands Small Business Week. Jerry Garcia, public relations and marketing director for the Virgin Islands Economic Development Authority will be the event's keynote speaker. Garcia will discuss the "Importance of Competitive Marketing for Small Businesses." The event is offered in conjunction with the U.S. Small Business Association. Free Life Skills Workshop Slated for May 13 on St. Thomas
New Image Foundation and Clearwater Consulting Concepts in collaboration with the UVI's Virgin Islands Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will host a free life skills workshop from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Thursday, May 13, at the center's training room at Nisky Center on St. Thomas. The workshop will feature Timothy Kight, chief executive officer of Focus3. Kight, one of the most effective and powerful speakers in today's business world, will introduce his life skills training program "The R Factor - How to Maximize the One Thing You Control."
The workshop will be followed next week by three full days of immersive Train-the-Trainer instruction conducted by Kight. The focus then will be equipping Virgin Islands not-for-profit, government agency and commercial businesses with the tools and skills necessary to drive personal and organizational excellence using The R Factor.

SBA/SBDC Invites Businesses to Meet Federal Government Contracting Officers
The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) in collaboration with the VI Small Business Development Center (VI SBDC) will offer a chance to meet with federal government contracting officers on St. Croix and St. Thomas this week. The sessions will feature presentations by contracting officers from the Virgin Islands National Guard, the General Service Administration (GSA) and the National Park Service.
Networking and matchmaking sessions will follow, allowing individuals to meet directly with federal procurement officers as well as a procurement contract representative from SBA national office. A business development specialist from the Puerto Rico District Office will also be on hand. Federal procurement officers routinely contract for products and services from qualified local firms. Topics to be covered include the SBA 8(a) Business Development Program, the certification process, the SBA HUBzone Program and the Central Contractor Registration service.
The St. Croix session is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 13, at the SBDC Training Center at Sunshine Mall. The St. Thomas session will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday, May 14, at the SBDC Training Facility at Nisky Center. Registration is free. Seating is limited on St Croix.
