UVI Senate to Meet Today - Friday, May 14
The UVI Senate will conduct its last meeting for the 2009-2010 academic year from 1 to 3 p.m. today (Friday, May 14). The session will take place in the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus, with a videoconference link to Room 713 of the Evans Center on the St. Croix campus.

UVI Commencement Set May 15-16; Randall Robinson to Speak
UVI conducts its 46th Annual Commencement Ceremonies on May 15 and 16, on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses, respectively. The St. Thomas ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 15, in the Sports and Fitness Center. On St. Croix the ceremony will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 16, on the campus grounds. The ceremonies will be broadcast live, with coverage on St. Thomas provided by Radio One - AM 1000. On St. Croix, coverage will be provided by WSTX radio - AM 970.
The 2010 class speakers - selected by their classmates - will be Jaedee S.K. Caines on St. Thomas and Carmie K. Thompson on St. Croix.
The keynote speaker for both campuses is Randall Robinson, an internationally respected social justice advocate and author. Robinson is a professor of law at Penn State University and a graduate of Harvard Law School. In 1979 he established TransAfrica to promote enlightened, progressive U.S. policies towards Africa and the Caribbean. As TransAfrica's president, Robinson frequently testified before Congress on U.S. policies toward Africa and the Caribbean. Robinson also led "Free South Africa Movement," the nation-wide campaign to end apartheid in South Africa.
UVI Honors Students at 2010 Academic Awards
The University of the Virgin Islands celebrated its top students for 2009-2010 with Academic Awards Ceremonies on each campus. The St. Croix campus event was held on April 24 and the St. Thomas campus event was held on April 25. Students received commendation for their grade point averages (GPAs) and leadership.
Musiq Soulchild, Vivian Green Next Up at the Reichhold Center on May 22
Two of the hottest acts on the Neo-Soul music circuit will take to the stage for the season finale at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts at 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 22. Musiq Soulchild - with hits such at "Teach Me," "Halfcrazy" and "Love" - will join with Vivian Green an R&B and soul singer-songwriter and pianist. A multiple Grammy award nominee, Soulchild has developed a style blending contemporary R&B, soul, funk, alternative, blues, jazz and hip hop. Quiz for Free Soulchild/Green Tickets Set May 17 for UVI Employees
One lucky UVI employee will have a chance to win two tickets to next Saturday's Musiq Soulchild/Vivian Green concert at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts. On Monday, May 17, the Reichhold Center and the Public Relations Office will publish a quiz in the UVI Bulletin Board. The first person to correctly answer the quiz question by calling the Bulletin Board Contest Line will win the tickets. Watch for Monday's Bulletin Board.
Marvin E. Williams Scholarship Fund Established at UVI
The office of The Caribbean Writer, in conjunction with UVI's Office of Institutional Advancement, has announced the establishment of the Marvin E. Williams Scholarship Fund to provide ongoing support to deserving students studying humanities in the University's College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.
Marvin Williams, who died in April, first joined the University of the Virgin Islands as a visiting faculty on the St. Croix campus in 1992. He later rejoined the faculty in 1995 in another visiting capacity and became a permanent faculty member in 2001. He was named editor of UVI's literary anthology The Caribbean Writer in 2002. He ended his tenure with the University in September 2008, when he became ill.
The goal of the Williams Scholarship Fund, according Dr. Opal Palmer Adisa, editor of The Caribbean Writer, is to provide an annual scholarship of $1,000, beginning with the upcoming 2010 fall semester. UVI-CES to Host Free Diabetes Awareness Workshop on May 19
The 4-H/Family and Consumer Sciences Program of UVI's Cooperative Extension Service will hold a free workshop on diabetes awareness from 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, May 19. The session will take place in Room 133 of UVI Research and Extension Center on the St. Croix campus. UVI Summer Music Camp Slated June 3 to July 30 on St. Thomas Campus
The University of the Virgin Islands' Summer Music Camp - a five-and-one-half-week, comprehensive music camp for junior and senior high school students - is scheduled to run from June 3 through July 30 at the Music Education Building on the University's St. Thomas campus. The camp, for students ages 12 to 17, will operate on Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.
Organized by UVI's Music Area, the camp is under the direction of Prof. Austin A. Venzen, and funded in part by the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Law Enforcement Planning Commission and the Department of Human Services. Scholarships Offered for Advanced Degrees, Cultural Projects; Deadline Today - May 14
Virgin Islands residents pursuing advanced degrees are encouraged to apply for the VI Academic & Cultural Awards Endowment Scholarship. Funding is also available for VI residents conducting research and projects designed to promote cultural awareness in the territory. Recipients may receive up to $10,000 per year. Twenty-one scholarships were awarded for the 2009-2010 period, totaling $207,000.
The application deadline is today - Friday, May 14. Applications are available on St. Croix and St. Thomas at the University of the Virgin Islands, the VI Board of Education and the VI Superior Court. Click here for an application and residency certification form.
UVI Seeks Applicants for Psychology Master's Degree Program
UVI is seeking applicants for a new graduate program in psychology, which was approved by the UVI Board of Trustees in March. While the University's application deadline for graduate programs is officially April 30, the deadline for the Master of Arts in Psychology with a Counseling Concentration program has been extended until all of the allotted slots in the program are filled. The program seeks to enroll 15 students on the St. Thomas campus and 15 students on the St. Croix campus for the Fall 2010 semester.

UVI Libraries to Observe Intersession Hours May 10-14
UVI's Information Technology Services has announced that the University's libraries are observing intersession hours through Friday, May 14. During this period UVI Libraries will operate from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The libraries will be closed on Saturday, May 15 and Sunday, May 16. Regular hours will resume at 8 a.m. on Monday, May 17. UVI Sponsoring 'Today in VI History' On WSTA
On Monday, May 3, the University began sponsorship of a 12-month radio program on WSTA called "Today in VI History."
The University's brand name and slogan messages will be featured more than 500 time on the daily radio feature that will highlight the significant personalities, places, accomplishments and events that have shaped the territory's four islands for the past 517 years. Other sponsors include MSI, First Bank, Guardian Insurance and the West Indian Company Limited.
"Today in Virgin Islands History" will air daily on WSTA Radio between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m., Monday through Friday.
Harrigan Memorial Scholarship Offered to Children of British Virgin Islanders
The League of British Virgin Islanders of St. Thomas-St. John is accepting applications for its 2010 Norwell Harrigan Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship offers $1,500 per year, for two years, for a student attending either UVI campus.
To qualify, students must:
be the child of at least one British Virgin Islander
be a former graduate or a prospective graduate of either the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College or any secondary school or secondary department in the British Virgin Islands
be either accepted for admission by or already enrolled in any program at the University of the Virgin Islands

Federal Pell Grant, Direct Loan Programs Offer Funds for Summer School
UVI students who are 2009-2010 financial aid recipients and who need money for summer school are advised to visit the University's Financial Aid Offices to determine if they are eligible for the New Year Round Federal Pell Grant or Direct Loan programs. Information and application forms for the programs are available from the Financial Aid Section (Applying for Aid/Summer Aid tab) of the UVI web site - www.uvi.edu - or this direct link.
To be eligible, students need to meet these requirements:
Have a valid financial aid application on file for 2009-2010 aid year.
Have remaining financial aid from the 2009-2010 aid year.
Have met all Federal and University of the Virgin Islands eligibility requirements.
If registering for both summer sessions, financial aid eligibility will be determined based on combined enrollment. Any changes in a student's enrollment status during the summer term can result in the Federal Pell Grant or Direct Loan being reduced or cancelled. A minimum of six credits are required for Direct Loan eligibility. Financial Aid Summer Payment Authorization to accept your charges will commence on May 7, 2010. The UVI Cashier's Offices are open from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

St. Thomas/St. John Awards Ceremony to Highlight VI Small Business Week
UVI's VI Small Business Development Center will host its annual St. Thomas/St. John Awards Ceremony from 8 a.m. to noon on Friday, June 4, at the Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort and Spa. The ceremony will highlight the observance of Virgin Islands Small Business Week. Jerry Garcia, public relations and marketing director for the Virgin Islands Economic Development Authority will be the event's keynote speaker. Garcia will discuss the "Importance of Competitive Marketing for Small Businesses." The event is offered in conjunction with the U.S. Small Business Association.
