UVI to Close May 31 for Memorial Day Observance

The University of the Virgin Islands will be closed on Monday, May 31, in observance of Memorial Day. Summer Session I classes and University administrative offices will resume their regular schedules on Tuesday, June 1. While the UVI libraries will also be closed on Monday, students will have access to these computer labs: The 24/7 Lab on St. Thomas and the North West Wing 120 Lab on St. Croix. Students can access online library resources at any time at http://library.uvi.edu.

SBDC to Observe Small Business Week with Activities May 31- June 5

The University of the Virgin Islands Small Business Development Center will observe Small Business week May 31-June 5. The theme of this year's observance is "Small Businesses: Driving America's Economy."

UVI Registration for 4-H Summer Academy Programs Set May 27-28

The 2010 UVI/4-H Summer Academy - a six-week summer camp program for children ages five through 14 - will be held June 28 through August 6, on St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John. Camps will feature a myriad of academic enhancement and educational activities, field trips and guest speakers, all with the goal of providing fun for all the participants.

The fee is $200 for the first child and $175 for each additional child. On St. Croix, camps will be located at the Sunny Isle Baptist Church School and at the UVI campus. On St. Thomas the camp will be held at Gladys Abraham School. The St. John camp will be offered at Julius Sprauve School.

Reduced fees are offered for family members of UVI employees who take part in early registration on May 27 and 28. See contact numbers below for registration details.

The general public will register, on a first-come, first-served basis, from June 1 to 4, with registration continuing until all slots are filled. Fees must be paid by money order at registration.

Public Invited to Summer Institute's World Forum Debate on May 31

UVI 2010 Summer Institute for Future Global Leaders opened, May 18, and continues through June 2, on the University's St. Thomas campus. The institute brings together 40 students from 16 countries and 22 university campuses in the Caribbean and the U.S mainland for two weeks of intensive study. This year's theme is "Managing Natural Disasters: A Call for Future Global Leaders."

A highlight of the institute is the World Forum Debate, which is slated for Monday, May 31, at the UVI Administration and Conference Center. The forum, which is free and open to the public, will take place from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The World Forum will follow the United Nations format, with students taking the roles of representatives from different countries debating a topic of world importance. Their topic of debate will be: "Developed nations should shoulder the responsibility for managing natural disasters." UVI Sets 2010 Alumni Phonathon for June 1-4; Volunteers Sought

The University of the Virgin Islands' 2010 Alumni Phonathon has been scheduled for June 1 through 4. Each evening of the Phonathon, UVI administrators, staff, alumni and student volunteers will gather - from 5:30 to 9 p.m. - in the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus to place calls to many of the more than 7,000 UVI alumni in the territory and abroad. They will be updating alumni contact information and asking them to pledge their financial support to their alma mater.

The Phonathon is expected to have 20 phone lines for use this year. Persons interested in working as volunteers should call the Office of Institutional Advancement at (340) 693-1040.

Bucs Travel Club Sets Food Sale for June 2 on St. Croix

The UVI Bucs Travel Club on St. Croix will conduct a fund-raising food sale from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, June 2, at the Melvin Evans Center on the St. Croix campus. The cost will be $13 per plate (with extras) of baked chicken or stewed fish and $6 for lasagna (veggie, turkey or beef). UVI Summer Music Camp Slated June 3 to July 30 on St. Thomas Campus

The University of the Virgin Islands' Summer Music Camp - a five-and-one-half-week, comprehensive music camp for junior and senior high school students - is scheduled to run from June 3 through July 30 at the Music Education Building on the University's St. Thomas campus. The camp, for students ages 12 to 17, will operate on Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.

Organized by UVI's Music Area, the camp is under the direction of Prof. Austin A. Venzen, and funded in part by the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Law Enforcement Planning Commission and the Department of Human Services. RT-Park Board of Directors to Meet June 4 on St. Croix

The UVI Research and Technology Park Corporation and the Park Protected Cell Corporation Board of Directors will meet from 1 to 4:30 p.m. (AST) on Friday, June 4, at the Beach Meeting Room of the Buccaneer Hotel on St. Croix. UVI Team Members Sought for St. Thomas' 2010 Relay for Life

UVI's 2010 Relay for Life Committee on the St. Thomas campus has already organized one team of 15 for the American Red Cross's 2010 event and is working on a second. The Relay for Life is scheduled for June 26-27. To join a team, individuals need to raise at least $100 in contributions to the event. This can be done as an individual contribution or team members can solicit contributions. Individuals interested in joining a team, or in providing volunteer support - set-up, take-down, food, beverages, etc. - should contact Carey Galdo at 693-1371 or send email to cgaldo@uvi.edu.

Summer Session II Slated for June 23-July 29

Students to Present Work at Summer Research Symposium on July 30

UVI's College of Science and Mathematics will conduct the annual Summer Research Symposium from 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday, July 30, in the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. Approximately 36 summer undergraduate students who are participating in a variety of STEM - science, technology, engineering and mathematics - programs will showcase their interdisciplinary research projects.

Class of 2009 Officers Urge Continued Support for the University

The officers of the UVI class of 2009 have taken the occasion of the one-year anniversary of their graduation to issue a request that all class members find ways to stay connected to the University. Among their suggestions, shared via email, was that each member of the class make a contribution of $20.09 to UVI. The officers wrote: "For a variety of reasons, many of us cannot contribute a substantial amount to the financial sustainability of our Alma Mater by the Sea. However, collectively, if each of us were to honor our $20.09 pledge, we would leave a mark!" Donations to UVI can be made by calling (340) 693-1040.

UVI Seeks Applicants for Psychology Master's Degree Program

UVI is seeking applicants for a new graduate program in psychology, which was approved by the UVI Board of Trustees in March. While the University's application deadline for graduate programs is officially April 30, the deadline for the Master of Arts in Psychology with a Counseling Concentration program has been extended until all of the allotted slots in the program are filled. The program seeks to enroll 15 students on the St. Thomas campus and 15 students on the St. Croix campus for the Fall 2010 semester.

The Master of Arts in Psychology with a Counseling Concentration enables individuals to work as psychological counselors in the public and private sectors. A news release is available on the UVI web site's home page - www.uvi.edu - and from this direct link.

Marvin E. Williams Scholarship Fund Established at UVI

The office of The Caribbean Writer, in conjunction with UVI's Office of Institutional Advancement, has announced the establishment of the Marvin E. Williams Scholarship Fund to provide ongoing support to deserving students studying humanities in the University's College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.

Marvin Williams, who died in April, first joined the University of the Virgin Islands as a visiting faculty on the St. Croix campus in 1992. He later rejoined the faculty in 1995 in another visiting capacity and became a permanent faculty member in 2001. He was named editor of UVI's literary anthology The Caribbean Writer in 2002. He ended his tenure with the University in September 2008, when he became ill.

The goal of the Williams Scholarship Fund, according Dr. Opal Palmer Adisa, editor of The Caribbean Writer, is to provide an annual scholarship of $1,000, beginning with the upcoming 2010 fall semester. Individuals who wish to contribute to the fund should send tax deductible contributions to the office of The Caribbean Writer - University of the Virgin Islands, RR 1 Box 10000, Kingshill VI 00850-9781. Harrigan Memorial Scholarship Offered to Children of British Virgin Islanders

The League of British Virgin Islanders of St. Thomas-St. John is accepting applications for its 2010 Norwell Harrigan Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship offers $1,500 per year, for two years, for a student attending either UVI campus.

To qualify, students must:

be the child of at least one British Virgin Islander

be a former graduate or a prospective graduate of either the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College or any secondary school or secondary department in the British Virgin Islands

be either accepted for admission by or already enrolled in any program at the University of the Virgin Islands

Formal transcripts, a letter of application and three letters of recommendation should be forwarded by June 15, 2010, to the following address: Scholarship Committee; P.O. Federal Pell Grant, Direct Loan Programs Offer Funds for Summer School

UVI students who are 2009-2010 financial aid recipients and who need money for summer school are advised to visit the University's Financial Aid Offices to determine if they are eligible for the New Year Round Federal Pell Grant or Direct Loan programs. Information and application forms for the programs are available from the Financial Aid Section (Applying for Aid/Summer Aid tab) of the UVI web site - www.uvi.edu - or this direct link.

To be eligible, students need to meet these requirements:

Have a valid financial aid application on file for 2009-2010 aid year.

Have remaining financial aid from the 2009-2010 aid year.

Have met all Federal and University of the Virgin Islands eligibility requirements.

If registering for both summer sessions, financial aid eligibility will be determined based on combined enrollment. Any changes in a student's enrollment status during the summer term can result in the Federal Pell Grant or Direct Loan being reduced or cancelled. A minimum of six credits are required for Direct Loan eligibility. Financial Aid Summer Payment Authorization to accept your charges will commence on May 7, 2010. The UVI Cashier's Offices are open from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
