Two-Year Academic Calendar Available Online; Summer Session I to Begin May 17
UVI's Academic Calendar for 2010 through 2012 is now available online. Links to the two-year Academic Calendar are available from the Academics, Admissions and Provost's sections of the UVI web site - www.uvi.edu. The calendar is also available from this direct link. UVI's 2010 Summer Session I classes are slated to begin on May 17. Online registration continues through May 12 with in-office registration slated for May 13 and 14.
UVI, Students, Professor Take Eight 2010 ADDY Awards
The University of the Virgin Islands, UVI students and one UVI professor recently garnered eight top awards in the Virgin Islands' 2010 ADDY Awards competition. ADDY Awards honor the best radio, TV, print and online advertising produced in the territory. They are sponsored annually by the American Advertising Federation (AAF) of the U.S. Virgin Islands.
UVI students swept the competition's Student Awards category, with Paul Remy, Jr. taking the Student Best of Show ADDY for a poster titled Virgin Islands Scenic Locations. Rounding out the contest's UVI student winners were St. Clair Hodge, representing a team of UVI students, and Ava Gumbs. Congratulations to UVI's Adult's and Children's Parade Winners
Congratulations to the members and supporters of UVI's two successful 2010 Carnival troupes. UVI's 4-H troupe - composed of some 35 students in the Cooperative Extension Services' 4-H program - won the Troupe Over 50 category in the Children's Parade on Friday, April 30. The 4-H program enrolls students from three to 13. The UVI adult troupe took the first runner-up award in the Troupe Under 50 category of the Adult's Parade held Saturday, May 1. Included in the UVI adult troupe were members of the basketball team, UVI's Mr. Cool Kyza Callwood and members of the UVI Spirit Squad. UVI's entry also featured carnival float that depicted a sunken galleon crewed by Miss UVI Joneisa Smith decked out as a mermaid. The carnival theme was "Bacchanal Again for 2010."
Musiq Soulchild, Vivian Green Next Up at the Reichhold Center
Two of the hottest acts on the Neo-Soul music circuit will take to the stage for the season finale at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts at 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 22. Musiq Soulchild - with hits such at "Teach Me," "Halfcrazy" and "Love" - will join with Vivian Green an R&B and soul singer-songwriter and pianist. A multiple Grammy award nominee, Musiq has developed a style blending contemporary R&B, soul, funk, alternative, blues, jazz and hip hop. UVI Sponsoring 'Today in VI History' On WSTA
On Monday, May 3, the University began sponsorship of a 12-month radio program on WSTA called "Today in VI History."
The University's brand name and slogan messages will be featured more than 500 time on the daily radio feature that will highlight the significant personalities, places, accomplishments and events that have shaped the territory's four islands for the past 517 years. Other sponsors include MSI, First Bank, Guardian Insurance and the West Indian Company Limited.
"Today in Virgin Islands History" will air daily on WSTA Radio between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m., Monday through Friday.
UVI St. Thomas Campus Relay for Life Team Plans May 7 Meeting

Proposal Writing and Post-Award Grant Management Seminar Set May 12
UVI's Office of Sponsored Programs and the Controller's Office will offer a proposal writing and post-award grant management seminar from 2:45 to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 12. This session will cover proposal writing and project implementation at UVI. Special emphasis will be given to the internal review process and changes in University procedures that impact on externally-sponsored projects. The seminar venue is to be determined.

Math Skills Final Exams Scheduled for May 7
Math Skills Final Exams are scheduled in two sessions on both UVI campuses from 3 to 5 p.m. and from 5:15 to 7:15 p.m. on Friday, May 7. More information is available on the Final Exams Schedule common exams page.
Scholarships Available for Advanced Degrees, Cultural Projects
Virgin Islands residents pursuing advanced degrees are encouraged to apply for the VI Academic & Cultural Awards Endowment Scholarship. Funding is also available for VI residents conducting research and projects designed to promote cultural awareness in the territory. Recipients may receive up to $10,000 per year. Twenty-one scholarships were awarded for the 2009-2010 period, totaling $207,000.
The application deadline is May 14. Applications are available on St. Croix and St. Thomas at the University of the Virgin Islands, the VI Board of Education and the VI Superior Court. Click here for an application and residency certification form.
UVI's Bookstores Schedule 'Used Books Buyback'
UVI's bookstores have announced the schedule for the end-of-semester "Used Book Buyback." The buyback program allows students to receive 50 percent of the purchase price for textbooks that are "requisitioned" for the following semester. Text books not requisitioned for the following semester will be bought back at the discretion of used book wholesalers, who generally provide 20 percent of the purchase price. Purchase receipts are required for full participation in the program.

Part-Time Faculty Invited to End-of-Semester Service Awards on May 8
The Office of the Provost invites all Part-time Faculty to an end-of-semester information-sharing event and Service Awards Ceremony scheduled from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 8. The activity will be videoconferenced between Chase Auditorium (Business 110) on the St. Thomas campus and Evans Center Room 401 on the St. Croix campus. A pre-program social is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in both locations. Refreshments will be served.
Harrigan Memorial Scholarship Offered to Children of British Virgin Islanders
The League of British Virgin Islanders of St. Thomas-St. John is accepting applications for its 2010 Norwell Harrigan Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship offers $1,500 per year, for two years, for a student attending either UVI campus.
To qualify, students must:
be the child of at least one British Virgin Islander
be a former graduate or a prospective graduate of either the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College or any secondary school or secondary department in the British Virgin Islands
be either accepted for admission by or already enrolled in any program at the University of the Virgin Islands

Placement Test Notes...
UVI Math Placement Test Slated for May 11 on Both Campuses
UVI's next Mathematics Diagnostic and Placement Test will be administered from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 11, on both campuses. The St. Thomas venue will be Classroom Administration Building Room 307. On St. Croix, the test will be offered in these locations: Q-100 and R-100.
Incoming UVI students who scored below 490 on the SAT-Math test must take the Math Placement test before starting their first semester classes. The test is designed to place students in the courses that best meet their needs. Student information on how to prepare for the test is available from this web link: Show them you know some math!
UVI English Placement Test Slated for May 12 on Both Campuses
UVI's English Placement tests are scheduled for 4 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 12, on both the St. Thomas and the St. Croix campuses. The English 100 (essay) test will be offered from 4 to 5:15 p.m., and the English 101 (reading) test will be from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m.
On the St. Thomas campus, testing will take place in Sports and Fitness Center, Room 222, unless otherwise notified. On the St. Croix campus, testing will be held in Q-100 and R-100, unless otherwise notified.
Individuals taking the tests should bring two pens, with blue or black ink, and picture identification.
Federal Pell Grant, Direct Loan Programs Offer Funds for Summer School
UVI students who are 2009-2010 financial aid recipients and who need money for summer school are advised to visit the University's Financial Aid Offices to determine if they are eligible for the New Year Round Federal Pell Grant or Direct Loan programs. Information and application forms for the programs are available from the Financial Aid Section (Applying for Aid/Summer Aid tab) of the UVI web site - www.uvi.edu - or this direct link.
To be eligible, students need to meet these requirements:
Have a valid financial aid application on file for 2009-2010 aid year.
Have remaining financial aid from the 2009-2010 aid year.
Have met all Federal and University of the Virgin Islands eligibility requirements.
If registering for both summer sessions, financial aid eligibility will be determined based on combined enrollment. Any changes in a student's enrollment status during the summer term can result in the Federal Pell Grant or Direct Loan being reduced or cancelled. A minimum of six credits are required for Direct Loan eligibility. Financial Aid Summer Payment Authorization to accept your charges will commence on May 7, 2010. The UVI Cashier's Offices are open from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

5th Annual Governor's Safety and Health Conference Set for May
Registration is now available for the 5th Annual Governor's Safety and Health Conference which will be conducted by the UVI-CELL Safety in Paradise Program, in collaboration with the V.I. Office of Homeland Security and the V.I. Department of Labor - Division of Occupational Safety and Health.
The highlight of this year's conference will be the keynote address by Congressman Bennie G. Thompson, the eight-term Democratic representative for Mississippi's Second District and chairman of the Homeland Security Committee. The Committee was established in 2002 following the attacks of September 11th and is responsible for providing government oversight on terrorism and disaster relief agencies.
The conference will be held in May, with sessions on St. Thomas from May 5 to 7, at the Marriott Frenchman's Reef Resort and on St. Croix from May 10 to 12, at the Carambola Golf and Beach Resort. The theme of the conference is "Keeping Paradise Safe and Secure: Awareness, Preparation and Prevention."
Topics to be covered include: Green Jobs, pandemics, planning for disasters, keeping campuses Safe, workplace Safety and hazard recognition, recognizing and responding to acts of terrorism, and more.

St. Thomas/St. John Awards Ceremony to Highlight VI Small Business Week
UVI's VI Small Business Development Center will host its annual St. Thomas/St. John Awards Ceremony from 8 a.m. to noon on Friday, June 4, at the Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort and Spa. The ceremony will highlight the observance of Virgin Islands Small Business Week. Jerry Garcia, public relations and marketing director for the Virgin Islands Economic Development Authority will be the event's keynote speaker. Garcia will discuss the "Importance of Competitive Marketing for Small Businesses." The event is offered in conjunction with the U.S. Small Business Association.
