First VI-EPSCoR Annual Conference Set Dec. 6; Economic Development is Goal
The Virgin Islands Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (VI-EPSCoR) invites policy makers, academics, students and the business community to explore ways that science and technology can promote economic development in the territory at its first annual conference.
The conference theme is "Integrating Science and Our Economy: A Model for Island Ecosystems." It will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 6, at the Frenchman's Reef and Morning Star Marriott Beach Resort on St. Thomas. The goal of this free conference is to provide greater awareness and understanding of the opportunities and mechanisms for optimizing economic leverage from science and technology initiatives in the territory. The conference is being held in collaboration with the University of the Virgin Islands Small Business Development Center.
St. Croix Biodiversity Film Fest to Conclude with 'Future Conditional' on Dec. 2
The 2010 Year of Biodiversity Film Fest on St. Croix concludes on Thursday, Dec. 2, with a free screening of the film "Future Conditional." The feature - part of the award winning PBS series "Journey to Planet Earth" - is narrated by Matt Damon. It investigates the link between environmental change and the future health of the planet. It's a future that is conditional on how we cope with the spread of toxic pollution in four locations: the Arctic, Mexico, Uzbekistan and the United States.
The screening is set for 6 p.m. in Room 133 of the UVI Research & Extension Center on the St. Croix campus. Admission is free and no reservations are required. The festival is co-hosted by the St. Croix Environmental Association (SEA) and the University of the Virgin Islands Marine Advisory Service. UVI Theatre Donates Costume Clothing to St. Lucia Hurricane Relief Effort
The UVI Theatre has donated 30 newly made pairs of girls and women's shorts, almost 20 pairs of tennis shoes, and several pairs of new men's and boys' khaki pants and matching khaki work shirts to the UVI St. Lucia Hurricane Relief Effort. The clothing was used as costuming for UVI Theatre's recent production of "South Pacific."
"On behalf of our cast and crew, it is our distinct pleasure to pass these on to our Caribbean friends and neighbors," said Dr. Doug Larche, UVI's playwright-in-residence and Communication professor. "We send them along with our best wishes and care, along with a touch of good luck from our magical experience producing South Pacific together." The clothing was all new, worn only for the production, and laundered before being donated.

Fall Semester Classes End on Saturday, Dec. 4
The last day of classes for UVI's fall semester will be Saturday, Dec. 4. Final examinations are scheduled for Dec. 6 to 11. No other academic activities are allowed during that period. The fall semester officially ends on Dec. 11.
Spring Registration Now Open for Returning Students; New Students to Register Jan 3
Online registration for the spring semester using the University's BanWeb system is available to returning UVI students now through Jan. 3, 2011. To register, students must confer with advisors to have courses approved and to receive login PINs. Tuition and fees for returning students may be paid - in person, by mail, by credit card or online - through Jan. 4, 2011. Payment by mail must be postmarked no later than Dec. 17, 2010.
Registration for new students is scheduled for Jan. 5, 2011. Registration is available in the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. On the St. Croix campus, registration is available in the Great Hall.

Smokin' Acez Win St. Croix Intramural Volleyball Championship
Smokin' Acez, led by captain Hudson Browne, upset Street Vybez' to win (25-16, 22-25, 25-13 and 25-20) an exciting championship intramural volleyball game Wednesday on UVI's St. Croix campus. Five co-ed volleyball teams competed in the fall semester intramural league, with more than sixty UVI student competitors. Though the league was frequently interrupted by the tremendous amount of rain the territory experienced this fall, the teams came together for a very competitive final, according to Intramural Coordinator Bruce Wray.
'The Caribbean Writer' Publishes 2011 Art/Poetry Calendar
"The Caribbean Writer," UVI's literary journal with a Caribbean focus, has published a 2011 Calendar in time for holiday giving. Sub-titled "12 Months of Art and Poetry," the calendar features quality fine art by professional, local artists and some of the best poems to have graced the journal's pages. Along with a careful integration of art and poetry, the calendar includes the independence dates of various Caribbean islands, birthdays of local as well as regional poets, and important dates specific to the Virgin Islands. Dr. Opal Palmer Adisa, editor of "The Caribbean Writer," said the calendar is "a celebration of all of us."
Proceeds from calendar sales will help support the 25th anniversary "Ay-Ay Conference" for teachers and writers to be held at UVI in June of 2011. Calendars are $20 each, with bulk orders of three calendars for $50.
St. Croix Campus Accepting Bids on Aerial Lifting Equipment Until Nov. 29
The University of the Virgin Islands will accept sealed bids until Monday, Nov. 29, 2010, between the hours of 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day for used aerial lifting equipment currently located by the Physical Plant Office on the St. Croix campus. The equipment will be sold as is. Only sealed bids will be accepted for the purchase of the equipment. Bid documents/instructions can be picked up from the Campus Operations Office. Student Employee Evaluations, Employment Request Forms Due Nov. 30
Student Employee Evaluation forms, required at the end of each semester, are due for the current semester no later than Tuesday, Nov. 30. Evaluations must be submitted to UVI's Offices of Student Employment.
The Offices of Student Employment on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses are also accepting Request for Student Worker forms for the spring 2011 semester. Job descriptions must be included with request forms. Forms should be submitted by Nov. 30.

World AIDS Day Poetry Competition Slated for Dec. 1 on St. Thomas Campus
UVI students are invited to participate in a poetry competition marking World AIDS Day on the St. Thomas campus from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 1. Participants will create their own poem, song, jingle, skit or rap with the subject being HIV/AIDS prevention. Entries are limited to five minutes. The competition will take place in the UVI Dining Pavilion. Gift certificates worth $75, $50 and $25 will go to the top three finishers. Articles for 2011 Agrifest Bulletin Due by Dec. 1
Dec. 1, 2010 is the deadline for submission of articles intended for publication in the 2011 Agrifest Bulletin. Articles should be prepared using Microsoft Word and be no longer than three pages, with photos. Authors are reminded that the bulletin's audience is the general public and that the average reader should be able to understand them. The Agrifest Board of Directors will give preference to instructional "how to" articles. Articles should not be restricted to agricultural topics. Items on cultural or heritage issues are welcome. GERS to Host Town Hall Meeting on St. Croix on Dec. 2
The Government Employees Retirement System (GERS) has scheduled a town hall meeting for employees enrolled in the system on St. Croix from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 2, at the VI Cardiac Center. A similar meeting on St. Thomas was held Oct. 19. Among topics to be covered are Tier II implementation effective in January 2011, the recalculation of annuities, the election of GERS retirees to the Board of Trustees and Havensight Mall. UVI Jazz and Steel Pan Ensembles Plan Concert Dec. 3 on St. Thomas Campus
UVI's Jazz Ensemble and Steel Pan Ensemble will appear in concert at 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 3, at the Dining Pavilion on the St. Thomas campus. The concert is presented by the Music Area of UVI's College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.
The Jazz Ensemble is under the direction of Prof. Martin Lamkin and the Steel Pan Ensemble is directed by Shenelle Warner. The performance will feature guest vocalist Detra Davis. The concert will feature holiday favorites as well as a variety of jazz and popular standards. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students. UVI's Spirit of Christmas Concert Slated for Dec. 4 on St. Thomas
UVI's College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences will present its annual Christmas Concert - The Spirit of Christmas - at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 4, at the Christchurch Methodist Church at Market Square in Charlotte Amalie. The concert will feature the UVI Concert Band under the direction of Professor Austin A. Venzen. Guest performers will be Lorna Freeman-Dennis, Andrea Lee, Detra Davis, Marcus and Portia Narkatis, Leah Trotman, Shirya Crabb and the Christchurch "Golden Jems." A special appearance by Santa is expected. 5th Woodworkers' Expo Sessions Set on St. Thomas and St. John in December
The fifth annual Virgin Islands' Woodworkers' Expo - featuring works from members of the St. Thomas/St. John Woodworkers Society and the St. Croix Wood Artist, Inc. group - will offer sessions on St. Thomas and St. John in December. The first session takes place at the Sports & Fitness Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus from Dec. 3 to 5. The Expo runs from 1 to 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 3, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 4, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 5. The St. John Expo will be held at the Market Place, from Dec. 10 to 12. It will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.
The Woodworkers' Expo is the ideal place to purchase holiday gifts. Individuals who are not members of these groups involved are also afforded a chance to exhibit and sell locally made wood products by applying for space through the UVI Cooperative Extension Service office on St. Thomas. St. Thomas SGA Recognized by National Center for Student Leadership
The St. Thomas campus Student Government Association (SGA) has been named the "Group of the Week" by the National Center for Student Leadership. Previously known as the National Conference on Student Leadership, NCSL provides leadership development opportunities for college student leaders and their advisors. UVI's SGA earned the organizations recognition for developing a newsletter named the Weekly Buzz. A delegation from the St. St. Thomas campus SGA also attended the organization's semi-annual National Conference on Student Leadership held Nov. 3-7, in Orlando, Fla. UVI Students Urged to Apply for Dell Summer Fellowship in Washington, D.C.
UVI graduate and undergraduate students with an interest in technology, public policy, ethics and diversity are encouraged to apply for the Dell Thurmond Woodard Fellowship as part of the Eben Tisdale Fellowship. This fellowship offers a $5,000 grant for a student to intern next summer - June 13 to Aug. 5, 2011 - in Washington, D.C., where the latest in technology meets the public policy arena.
The Woodard Fellowship was created in memory of the late Thurmond Woodard, a former vice president for Dell Computer. The deadline to apply is Feb. 15, 2011. Those interested should use the Eben Tisdale Fellowship Application, found at www.tisdalefellowship.org, and follow the instructions for submitting an additional essay on ethics and diversity.

Students Offered Free SAT Preparation Program; Application Deadline Dec. 3
A free program designed to improve Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores for students on St. Thomas and St. Croix high schools will be offered in January by UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center in collaboration with Innovative Communications Corp. (ICC).
Students attending public high-schools on St. Thomas and St. Croix are urged to apply to the four-year Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) Program. Classes will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. every Saturday, beginning Jan. 15, 2011. Sessions will take place on UVI's St. Croix and St. Thomas campuses.
Launched in 2005, the UVICELL/ICC SAT Prep Program provides students with tips and strategies to improve their test-taking skills. Students are tracked from their freshman years through their senior years and are given classroom instruction and a series of mock-exams. Applicants must be ninth or tenth-grade public high school students with a grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 to 3.5. Interested applicants must submit their applications to the UVICELL Center by Friday, Dec. 3, 2010, to be considered for the program. Space is limited and will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis.

UVICELL Offers Performance Management Workshops on St. Thomas, St. Croix
UVI Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center will host one-day workshops to help in the development of performance management systems for businesses and organizations from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 8, on St. Croix and St. Thomas. The St. Croix session will be held at the Joseph A. Simpson Building, #23A Hospital Street in Frederiksted. On St. Thomas, the workshop will be held at the UVICELL Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus.
Offered in conjunction with the American Management Association (AMA), the workshop will present managers and supervisors with a clear model to follow for planning, monitoring, analyzing and maintaining a satisfying process of performance improvement for their staff. Participants will learn to identify and remedy performance gaps, document and evaluate performance, establish non-monetary rewards, use training and development tools to enhance performance and more.
