Bucs Head to D.C. for Opening Games of 2010 Basketball Season
UVI's men's basketball Buccaneers are schedule for a Washington, D.C., pre-season trip from Nov. 4 through 8, 2010. Games are scheduled as follows:
- Nov. 5, 2010 at 7 p.m. - UVI Bucs vs Montgomery College at the Rockville campus gym in Rockville, Md.
- Nov. 6, 2010 at 3 p.m. - UVI Bucs vs Goucher College at the Goucher campus arena in Towson, Md.
- Nov. 7, 2010 at 2 p.m. - UVI Bucs vs University of Mary Washington at the UMW campus arena in Fredericksburg, Va.

The Buccaneers will also play a game during the 2010 Paradise Jam on Saturday, Nov. 20. The Bucs' regular season LAI league play will begin in January.
St. Thomas Campus Debate Society Sets Recruiting Meeting for Nov. 4

MSA Plans Fasting Challenge for Nov. 4 on St. Croix Campus
The St. Croix Chapter of UVI's Muslim Student Association (MSA) will host a fasting challenge on Thursday, Nov. 4. All students, faculty and staff are challenged to fast - abstain from eating and drinking - from noon until sunset (5:45 p.m.). At 5 p.m. the MSA invites everyone to join in UVI's Great Hall for an Iftar, a ceremonial breaking of the fast with food and drink, including some Middle Eastern cuisine. The MSA hopes to use this event to dispel some misconceptions about Islam and fasting, and at the same time provide a learning experience. It is also a great opportunity for those who want to ask questions about Islam. Sign-up is required for participation. R.E.A.C.H Ministry Plans Youth Rallies Nov. 5-7 on St. Thomas Campus
The R.E.A.C.H Ministry, a student organization on UVI's St. Thomas campus, will conduct Youth Rallies at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 5 and Saturday, Nov. 6 at the Dining Pavilion. Paiewonsky Library Upgrade Work Underway
The Ralph M. Paiewonsky Library is undergoing renovations. The work, which began on Monday, Oct. 25, will continue through the end of the semester. During the renovation period, the back area of the library (including both the east and west Bound Journal study areas) will be blocked off and the books normally held there will be placed in storage. There will be no direct or immediate access to books within call number range KF 4192.5 through PS 3555; the corresponding subject areas include Law, Education, Fine Arts, Language and Literature. Those books may be requested by filling out a call slip. They will be retrieved within 24 hours, Monday-Friday. Books requested on week-ends may not be available until Monday. Inter-library loan requests from STX for books in these areas will also be affected. The library staff has issued an apology for any inconvenience this may cause.

UVI Opens Special Scholarship Application Period; Deadline Set for Nov. 5
The University of the Virgin Islands has announced the availability of additional scholarship funding for undergraduate students for the 2010-2011 school year. To be considered individuals must be: matriculated as a full-time UVI students, have a minimum 3.0 GPA, not be receiving aid in excess of cost of attendance, submit a letter of recommendation and complete an essay on their educational goals. The application deadline is Friday, Nov. 5, 2010. They should be returned to the Office of Institutional Advancement on St. Thomas or Corally Beaupierre in the Financial Aid Office on St. Croix.

St. Croix Applicants Sought for Who's Who Among Students; Deadline is Nov.5
The University of the Virgin Islands Counseling & Career Center on the St. Croix campus is now recruiting for students to be considered for the Who's Who Among Students in American Universities & Colleges Award.
Who's Who Among Students is one of the most highly regarded and long-standing honors programs in the nation. It recognizes outstanding campus leaders and represents the pinnacle of their scholastic achievement. This exclusive honor is conferred by more than 2,842 schools nationwide. Successful applicants will be included in the prestigious Who's Who Among Students biographical volume.
To apply, students must be full-time, college seniors with a GPA of 3.2 or higher. They must be active in the community and maintain participation in leadership roles in school organizations and extracurricular activities. They must also demonstrate future leadership potential. UVI Concert Choir to Perform Sunday, Nov. 14, at Nisky Moravian
The Music Area of UVI's College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences will present a performance of the UVI Concert Choir at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 14, at the Nisky Moravian Church on St. Thomas. The Concert Choir will be under the direction of UVI Professor of Music Dr. Lorna Young-Wright. Admission is $15 for adults and $5 for students. The Caribbean Writer 'Creative Luncheon' Series Continues Nov. 18
Dr. Opal Palmer Adisa, editor of UVI's The Caribbean Writer, invites students, faculty and staff, as well as the general public, to a "Creative Luncheon Series" during the fall semester. Remaining luncheons are slated for noon on Nov. 18, and Dec. 9. They will take place from noon to 1 p.m. in Room 102 of the North West Wing on UVI's St. Croix campus. Participants are asked to bring lunch and a poem or short piece of prose to share. Dr. Adisa will begin the sessions with a poem and then lead a short writing activity. GERS to Host Town Hall Meeting on St. Croix on Dec. 2
The Government Employees Retirement System (GERS) has scheduled a town hall meeting for employees enrolled in the system on St. Croix from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 2, at the VI Cardiac Center. A similar meeting on St. Thomas was held Oct. 19. Among topics to be covered are Tier II implementation effective in January 2011, the recalculation of annuities, the election of GERS retirees to the Board of Trustees and Havensight Mall. The October issue of the monthly newsletter Dateline: UVI has been published. 'The Caribbean Writer's™ 2011 Art/Poetry Calendar Available for Preorder
"The Caribbean Writer," UVI's literary journal with a Caribbean focus, has announced it will publish a 2011 Art/Poetry Calendar featuring quality fine art by professional, local artists and some of the best poems to have graced the journal's pages. Along with a careful integration of art and poetry, the calendar will include the independence dates of the various Caribbean islands, birthdays of local as well as regional poets, and important dates specific to the Virgin Islands. Dr. Opal Palmer Adisa, editor of The Caribbean Writer, describes the calendar as "a celebration of all of us."
Proceeds from the calendar sales will help support the 25th anniversary "Ay-Ay Conference" which will be held at UVI for teachers and writers in June of 2011. Planning Underway for UVI Participation in V.I. Agrifest 2011
Planning for the UVI booth at the Virgin Islands Agriculture and Food Fair - Agrifest 2011 - is underway under the guidance of the Research and Public Service Steering Committee. The 40th anniversary of the Virgin Islands Agriculture and Food Fair is scheduled for Feb. 19 to 21, 2011, on the grounds of the Rudolph Shulterbrandt Agricultural Complex in Estate Lower Love on St. Croix. Fall CLEP Test Schedule for St. Thomas Campus
The College Level Examination Program (CLEP) test dates for the Fall 2010 semester have been finalized on the St. Thomas campus. The remaining CLEP tests are scheduled for Nov. 12, and Nov. 18, in the CATS computer lab (CA Building Room 123).
Students can register for the test at the front desk of the Office of Access and Enrollment Services, located on the first floor of the Administration and Conference Center. Test candidates must report to the test site no later than 9:30 a.m. on each test day with appropriate identification and form of payment. Acceptable forms of identification include a current driver's license, state or federal ID, a current passport, tribal ID card, naturalization card or certificate of citizenship. See page 25 of the 2010-2011 UVI Catalog for details on CLEP tests accepted by UVI.
The cost associated with CLEP is $77 per test (payable to College Board) and an additional administrative fee of $15 (payable to UVI prior to the test date). Payment must be made in the form of check, money order, or credit card; cash will not be accepted.

Dates and locations for UVI's Fall Semester Computer Literacy Exams (CLE) have been announced for both campuses. Details are also available from the Registrar's Section of the UVI web site www.uvi.edu and this direct link.
The remaining CLE exam date for St. Thomas are Friday, Oct. 29, 2010, and
