UVI Awarded $500K National Science Foundation Grant
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded a grant of $499,692 to the University of the Virgin Islands in support of a project to assess the impact of creative problem solving skills training on STEM retention. STEM refers to the science, technology, engineering and mathematics academic disciplines. The UVI project team involved with the grant includes principal investigator Dr. Kimarie Engerman of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, and co-principal investigators Dr. Donald Drost and Dr. Konstantinos Alexandridis, both of the UVI College of Science and Mathematics.
Employee Attendance Encouraged at UVI Staff Council General Meeting on Oct. 26
A general meeting of the UVI Staff Council will be held from 11 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Oct. 26, in Business Room 110 on St. Thomas and in Evans Center Room 401 on St. Croix. The meeting's agenda includes discussion of the Staff Satisfaction Surveys, the UVI Staff Council Officers' Retreat, the salary increase, nominations and elections, the Jan. 7 recess, and family health insurance.
In an Oct. 18, e-mail message to the University, UVI President Dr. David Hall encouraged staff members to attend the general meetings of the Staff Council. Intramural Co-ed Volleyball League Opens Today (Oct. 21) on St. Croix
The St. Croix campus Intramural Co-ed Volleyball League begins play at 9:15 p.m. today (Thursday, Oct. 21). Five teams are scheduled to compete in a round-robin league format. A single elimination play-off will determine the final league champions. Forty-seven participants will be playing every Tuesday and Thursday evening. Administration & Finance Component Retreat Set Oct. 22; Offices to be Closed
The offices of UVI's Administration and Finance Component - Purchasing, Accounting, Human Resources and the main Administration and Finance office - will be closed for a staff retreat on Friday, Oct. 22. The retreat will be held at VIERS, the Virgin Islands Environmental Research Station on St. John. All component offices will reopen on their regular schedules at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 25. Workshop on V.I. Fishing Issues Slated Oct. 22 at Nisky Center on St. Thomas
Individuals involved in the fishing industry are invited to participate in an interactive workshop to be presented by UVI's Virgin Islands Marine Advisory Service from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 22. The session will take place at the VI Small Business Development Center's Nisky Center office on St. Thomas. The workshop will include discussion of fish venting, fisher kit demonstrations, kit distribution and current research. Questions and comments are welcomed. St. Croix Biodiversity Film Fest to Focus on 'Winged Migration' on Sept. 23
The 2010 Year of Biodiversity Film Fest on St. Croix continues on Thursday, Oct. 28, with a free screening of the film "Winged Migration." The feature, an Academy Award nominee for Best Documentary, was produced by Jacques Perrin. The film offers stunning videography, with viewers seemingly flying along with some of the world's most gorgeous birds through areas as remote as the Arctic and the Amazon and as populated as Paris and New York City.
The screening is set for 6 p.m. in Room 133 of the UVI Research & Extension Center on the St. Croix campus. Admission is free and no reservations are required. The festival is co-hosted by the St. Croix Environmental Association (SEA) and the University of the Virgin Islands Marine Advisory Service. The final film in the series is set for Dec. 2.

UVI Community to Mark Red Ribbon Week - Oct. 25-29 - with Marches, Activities
Members of the UVI community on the St. Croix and St. Thomas campuses will mark Red Ribbon Week with public marches, walks, a rally, blood drives, motivational presentations, competitions and other activities from Monday, Oct. 25, through Friday, Oct. 29. Red Ribbon Week is part of a nationwide awareness campaign designed to prevent alcohol, tobacco and drug abuse and violence. It is observed annually in October.
UVI's Health Services Office on the St. Croix campus will open the week's activities with a march and rally against drug abuse at 5 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 25. On the St. Thomas campus, a highlight on St. Thomas will be a walk/rally at 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 27. The walk will be followed by a speak-out against substance abuse and crime at the Recreational Center.

Discounted Wellness Center Rates Offered for UVI Alumni
The UVI Wellness Center on the St. Thomas campus is accepting alumni memberships.
UVI alumni are able to purchase annual memberships for $350. That's a significant savings when compared to the $600 membership fee charged to the general public. Monthly memberships are also available to alumni at the following discounted rates: $30 per month; $85 for 3 months; $170 for 6 months; $260 for 9 months; $350 for 1 year
For alumni who wish to take fitness classes, the drop-in price for non-member alumni is $8 per class. Alumni who are members pay only $6 per drop-in class. The UVI Wellness Center is open Mondays through Fridays from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fitness classes began on Oct. 15.

Eighteen UVI students have been selected to attend the Thurgood Marshall Leadership Institute scheduled for Oct. 28 through Nov 2, in New York City. The Institute will focus on presenting "the best of the best" students from member colleges and universities to leaders and recruiters from the corporate, academic, legal and private industry sectors. UVI Opens Special Scholarship Application Period; Deadline Set for Nov. 5
The University of the Virgin Islands has announced the availability of additional scholarship funding for undergraduate students for the 2010-2011 school year. To be considered individuals must be: matriculated as a full-time UVI students, have a minimum 3.0 GPA, not be receiving aid in excess of cost of attendance, submit a letter of recommendation and complete an essay on their educational goals. The application deadline is Friday, Nov. 5, 2010. They should be returned to the Office of Institutional Advancement on St. Thomas or Corally Beaupierre in the Financial Aid Office on St. Croix.

UVI Concert Choir to Perform Sunday, Nov. 14, at Nisky Moravian

Third Health Disparities Institute Slated for Oct. 21-22
Persons interested in the state of mental health and substance abuse in the Caribbean are invited to attend the 3rd Annual Health Disparities Institute scheduled for Oct. 21 and 22, at the Frenchman's Reef and Morning Star Marriott Beach Resort on St. Thomas. The institute is hosted by the Caribbean Exploratory Research Center of Excellence (CERC), of the University of the Virgin Islands School of Nursing. The University of the Virgin Islands Counseling & Career Center on the St. Croix campus is now recruiting for students to be considered for the Who's Who Among Students in American Universities & Colleges Award.
Who's Who Among Students is one of the most highly regarded and long-standing honors programs in the nation. The Government Employees Retirement System (GERS) has scheduled town hall meetings for employees enrolled in the system this fall. Among topics to be covered are Tier II implementation effective in January 2011, the recalculation of annuities, the election of GERS retirees to the Board of Trustees and Havensight Mall. UVI Students Invited to Enter VIWP Essay Contest; Oct. 25 is Deadline
UVI students are invited to enter a Virgin Islands Writing Project (VIWP) essay contest designed to mark the observance of a National Day on Writing on Oct. 20. Essays, which must be a minimum of 500 words, will be judged on focus, support, organization and format, language use, style and conventions and originality. The essay topic is: Writing and writing competence are essential to the way we live.

Health Services to Sponsor Free Gynecological Clinic for Students on St. Thomas
The UVI Health Services Center on St. Thomas will sponsor a free gynecological clinic for all students from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 21. The clinic will offer Pap smears, pregnancy tests; STD testing for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea, birth control and counseling.
In honor of breast cancer awareness month, breast examinations for male and female students will also be offered. The clinic will take place at the Health Services Center. The Caribbean Writer 'Creative Luncheon' Series Continues Oct. 21
Dr. Opal Palmer Adisa, editor of UVI's The Caribbean Writer, invites students, faculty and staff, as well as the general public, to a "Creative Luncheon Series" during the fall semester. Luncheons are slated for noon on Oct. 21, Nov. 18, and Dec. 9. They will take place from noon to 1 p.m. in Room 102 of the North West Wing on UVI's St. Croix campus. UVI Chemistry Students Invite St. Croix Public to Chemistry Week Celebration
UVI chemistry students and others from the 4-H Youth Development Program invite the public to a local celebration of National Chemistry Week from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23, on the University's St. Croix campus. UVI Assistant Professor of Chemistry Dr. Bernard Castillo II, the event's coordinator, said the afternoon will include fun demonstrations and chemistry activities for children in grades 3 to 6 throughout the afternoon. St. Croix Campus SGA Sets V.I. Senatorial Election Forum for Oct. 28
The Student Government Association (SGA) on UVI's St. Croix campus will host a V.I. Senatorial Election Forum and meet-and-greet social from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 28. The forum will take place in the Great Hall of the North West Wing building.
The forum will allow each senatorial candidate to make a short presentation, discuss his/her platform and address concerns raised by the audience. The social will allow students, faculty, staff and community members to become directly acquainted with candidates. V.I. Native Returns to Lead UVI's Office of Institutional Advancement
Dionne V. Jackson has been selected as vice president for Institutional Advancement (IA) at the University of the Virgin Islands. She will have oversight of all of IA's areas, which include Annual Giving, Major Gifts, Alumni Affairs, Public Relations and the Reichhold Center for the Arts. Jackson has more than 10 years of higher education administration experience. A St. Thomas native, Jackson returns to UVI from the University of Pennsylvania, where she was the associate director of Major Gifts for the Provost's Area.
OIRP Outlines New Procedures for Processing Data Requests
UVI's Office of Institutional Research and Planning (OIRP) has announced two ways for members of the University community to submit requests for data.
(1) Send requests by e-mail to: firstname.lastname@example.org
Include: telephone number, a brief summary of the request and explanation of the purpose of the request, what will the data be used for and the deadline. This will ensure processing of the request in a timely manner.
(2) Use the OIRP Data Request Form
Visit the OIRP website (under the "Research" tab of the UVI home page - www.uvi.edu) and click on the tab titled "Data Request Form." (Click here for a direct link to the Data Request Form.) Fill out all the information fields on the form, include a brief summary and explanation of the purpose of the request and what the data will be used for, and include the deadline. Then click on the "Submit" button at the bottom of the form to begin processing.
Planning Underway for UVI Participation in V.I. Agrifest 2011
Planning for the UVI booth at the Virgin Islands Agriculture and Food Fair - Agrifest 2011 - is underway under the guidance of the Research and Public Service Steering Committee. The 40th anniversary of the Virgin Islands Agriculture and Food Fair is scheduled for Feb. 19 to 21, 2011, on the grounds of the Rudolph Shulterbrandt Agricultural Complex in Estate Lower Love on St. Croix. UVI Provides myCampus Portal for University Community
UVI students, faculty and staff can now securely and seamlessly access University information online through the new "myCampus" web portal which was recently activated. The "myCampus" portal provides users with single-sign-on access to online resources such as Blackboard, BanWeb, HelpDesk, Outlook Web Access, Gmail and PeopleAdmin.
It also allows students, faculty and staff to create user profiles, with photos, and to communicate with friends within the University. Users are invited to explore the myHome, myProfile and myFriends areas of the portal. The portal will also be used to share critical University information relating to University projects, Human Resources, Benefits, and more. Use the "myCampus" link at the top right of the UVI home page - www.uvi.edu - or this direct link - http://myCampus.uvi.edu - to access the portal. Users log in with the UVI username and password they use to access the UVI computer network.

Fall CLEP Test Schedule for St. Thomas Campus
The College Level Examination Program (CLEP) test dates for the Fall 2010 semester have been finalized on the St. Thomas campus. The remaining CLEP tests are scheduled for Oct. 26, Nov. 12, and Nov. 18, in the CATS computer lab (CA Building Room 123).
Students can register for the test at the front desk of the Office of Access and Enrollment Services, located on the first floor of the Administration and Conference Center. Test candidates must report to the test site no later than 9:30 a.m. on each test day with appropriate identification and form of payment. Acceptable forms of identification include a current driver's license, state or federal ID, a current passport, tribal ID card, naturalization card or certificate of citizenship. See page 25 of the 2010-2011 UVI Catalog for details on CLEP tests accepted by UVI.
The cost associated with CLEP is $77 per test (payable to College Board) and an additional administrative fee of $15 (payable to UVI prior to the test date). Payment must be made in the form of check, money order, or credit card; cash will not be accepted.

A Computer Literacy tutorial on St. Croix is scheduled from noon to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2010, in Room 131 of the North West Wing Building. No registration is required to take part in a tutorial.
Free Praxis Tutorial Program Extended for St. Thomas Public School Teachers
A free tutorial program covering the Praxis I and II tests for V.I. public school teachers on St. Thomas has been extended by UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center in collaboration with the V.I. Department of Education. The tutorials started Saturday, Oct. 16, and continue through Nov. 13. Sessions will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday at the UVICELL Center on St. Thomas.
This free service is being funded by the V.I. Department of Education. It prepares public school teachers for the Praxis I and II exams so that they can be designated as highly qualified in order to meet the mandates of the No Child Left Behind Act. To register for the free tutorials, teachers must be employed by the Department of Education and provide verification of employment upon registering.
