President Obama to Nominate UVI Trustee Carol Fulp to United Nations Post

President Barack Obama has announced his intent to nominate Carol Fulp, a member of the UVI Board of Trustees, to serve as a U.S. representative to the 65th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations. Trustee Fulp is Senior Vice President of Brand Communications and Corporate Social Responsibility for John Hancock Financial, at its company headquarters in Boston.

President Hall Outlines Efforts Toward Hotel & Hospitality Management Program

Free Basic Boating Course Begins Sept. 27 at SBDC Training Facility

The U.S. Sail and Power Squadron's basic boating course will be offered from Sept. 27 through Oct. 18 at the VI-Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Training Facility at Nisky Center on St. Thomas. The course is free. There is a charge for books and materials. Classes meet from 6 to 8 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays. For more information contact Capt. Health Disparities Institute to Focus on Mental Health & Drug Abuse

Everyone interested in the state of mental health and substance abuse in the Caribbean is invited to the 3rd Annual Health Disparities Institute scheduled for Oct. 21 and 22, at the Frenchman's Reef and Morning Star Marriott Beach Resort on St. Thomas. The institute is hosted by the Caribbean Exploratory Research Center of Excellence (CERC), of the University of the Virgin Islands School of Nursing. CERC is funded by a grant from the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities.

The theme of the Institute is "State of Mental Health and Substance Abuse: An Issue of All Ethnic/ Minorities and Caribbean Populations." The Institute will include panels of local and Caribbean experts involved with mental health care, concurrent sessions featuring presenters from across the country addressing mental health issues, and poster sessions. UVI Faculty, Staff Discounts Offered Through Sept. 30

Members of the UVI faculty and staff can take advantage of special discount rates for the Health Disparities Institute scheduled for Oct. 21-22. Bookstores Schedule Inventory for Sept. 27-30

The UVI Bookstores on both campuses will be closed from Sept. 27 through Sept. 30, to allow staffers to conduct the end-of-fiscal-year 2009-2010 inventory. Both Bookstores will re-open on Friday, Oct. 1. All are encouraged to make the necessary purchases prior to Sept. 27.

Students, Faculty, Staff Sought for Intramural Coed Volleyball on Both Campuses

UVI's Intramural Department will sponsor coed volleyball leagues on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses beginning in the near future. Games will be played on Tuesday and/or Thursday nights. UVI students, faculty and staff are encouraged to participate and to form teams. Teams will consist of 10 players, with no more than six on the court at a time. Teams must have a minimum of three female players on the court at all times.

Workshop on Applying for Federal Jobs Set for St. Croix, St. Thomas

UVI's Counseling and Career Services Offices on St. Croix and St. Thomas will host workshops entitled "Learn How to Apply for Federal Jobs With the Expert!" on St. Croix on Sept. 21, on and on St. Thomas on Sept. 22. A representative from the Federal Air Marshal Service will be the featured presenter.

The St. Croix campus sessions will take place in from 11 a.m. to noon in Room 103 of the North West Wing. The St. Thomas campus session will be held in the Counseling and Placement Center's conference room from noon to 1 p.m.

St. Croix Biodiversity Film Fest to Focus on 'The Air We Breathe' on Sept. 23

The 2010 Year of Biodiversity Film Fest on St. Croix continues on Thursday, Sept. 23, with a free screening of the film "The Air We Breathe." The feature, from the National Film Board of Canada, focuses on how political choices and socio-cultural forces have led to a growing crisis of air pollution in major urban centers in Canada and the U.S. Writer, director and producer Jim Hamm produced the segment. The screening is set for 6 p.m. in Room 133 of the UVI Research & Extension Center on the St. Croix campus. Admission is free and no reservations are required. The festival is co-hosted by the St. Croix Environmental Association (SEA) and the University of the Virgin Islands Marine Advisory Service. Additional films are scheduled for Oct. 28 and Dec. 2.

BWC Plans Session for Interested Students on Sept. 23 on St. Croix

The St. Croix campus chapter of Brothers With a Cause (BWC) will conduct an informational session for interested students at noon on Thursday, Sept. 23, at the Pavilion next to the Residence Hall. UVI President Dr. David Hall, who inspired the organization of Brothers With a Cause, will be in attendance. The group's goal, according to Chapter President Michael Campbell, is to recruit, support and retain male students and to make sure they make the most of their college experience. Most recently, the St. Croix BWC chapter brought out Sumo wrestlers for their promotional event "An Evening on the Lawn" on Aug. 27. HIV Jam Planned to Support St. Thomas Campus Testing Drive on Sept. 24

UVI's Student Peer Educators on the St. Thomas campus will host an HIV Testing Jam from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 24, at the UVI Dining Pavilion. The jam will feature entertainment by After Dark Entertainment and the Smooth VYBEZ International Band. It is designed to help support an HIV testing drive taking place on campus also on Sept. 24. Free HIV testing will be available in the Sports and Fitness Center from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and at the Health Services Building from 8 to 10 p.m.

Admission to the jam will be free for students who take an HIV test and $5 for students who are not tested. Admission will be $5 for non-students who are tested and $10 for non-students who are not tested. For more information call the Student Peer Educators office at (340) 693-1120 or 1126.

Free Health & Wellness Screening Day Set Sept. 24 on St. Thomas Campus

UVI's Health Services Office on the St. Thomas campus will offer health and wellness screening day on Friday, Sept. 24, for all students, faculty and staff - as well as the general public. Free screening for blood pressure, blood glucose and blood cholesterol, eye exams, chair massage therapy, HIV testing and counseling will be available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Sports and Fitness Center. UVI Wellness Center Grand Opening Set for Sept. 24 on St. Thomas Campus

The UVI community is invited to the grand opening ceremony for the new Wellness Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus at 2:45 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 24. Representatives from the U.S. Department of Interior will be in attendance, along with Gov. John deJongh, Jr., members of the UVI Board of Trustees and members of the V.I. Legislature.

UVI Faculty Advised to Back Up 2009 Blackboard Courses by Sept. 24

UVI's Information Technology Services advises all members of the faculty that they have until 3 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 24, to back up the contents of any 2009 courses offered via the Blackboard system. Blackboard's export process allows courses files to be saved to jump or external hard drives. After the Sept. 24 deadline, the Blackboard server will be cleared of all 2009 courses. Parliamentary Procedures Workshop Set Sept. 24 for Students on St. Croix

Volunteers Sought for Coastweeks Beach Cleanup Sept. 25 at Brewers Bay

The Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup, locally known as "Coastweeks" will host a kick-off event from 8 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25, at Brewers Bay Beach on UVI's St. Thomas campus. Every year, Coastweeks runs throughout the month of October so that local groups, businesses and organizations have the opportunity to help clean a beach, gut, or coastal area of their choosing. Participants also contribute data to an international database about marine debris. Water, gloves and trash bags will be provided free of charge at the kick-off and throughout the duration of Coastweeks. A presentation about USVI natural resources and Coastweeks is available to participating groups prior to the clean-up event, upon request. Fall Student Research Symposium Set Sept. 26 on St. Thomas

UVI's College of Science and Mathematics and the Emerging Caribbean Scientists (ECS) programs will hold the annual Fall Student Research Symposium at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 26, in the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus.

The symposium is part of an effort to increase research training and promote excellence among UVI students. It provides an opportunity for students to display the results of their work from their summer research experiences and for the public to interact with them. Free Workshop on Creating School Gardens Planned on Sept. 28

UVI's Cooperative Extension Service on the St. Thomas campus will conduct a free workshop titled "Creating a School Garden" on Tuesday, Sept. 28. The workshop is designed for public, private and parochial school teachers, paraprofessionals and any authorized school representatives in the St. Thomas-St. John District. The workshop will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The workshop will be held in the first-floor conference room of UVI's Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. The workshop will focus on the steps needed to create a vegetable garden.

St. Croix Campus Clubs/Organization Awareness Fairs Set Sept. 29

The Office of Student Activities on UVI's St. Croix campus will host its Clubs and Organizations Awareness Fair from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 29, in the Evans Center. Involvement in co-curricular activities creates learning opportunities for students and the chance to increase their leadership skills and abilities. It also enhances personal and scholastic development, while helping to define and shape career goals. UVI encourages students to explore various clubs and organizations. TMCF Representatives to Interview Student Candidates for Leadership Institute

Representatives from the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) will visit UVI's St. Croix and St. Thomas campuses to interview students interested in participating the organization's 10th Annual Leadership Institute and Career Fair scheduled for Oct. 29 in New York City. The conference provides networking opportunities, a career fair with major U.S. employers in attendance and a variety of workshops. UVI typically sends from 10 to 15 students to the activity.

The TMCF representatives will conduct interviews on the St. Thomas campus on Tuesday, Sept. 28, and on the St. Croix campus on Wednesday, Sept. 29.

To qualify, students must be juniors, seniors or graduate students with a 3.0 or higher GPA. Each candidate must participate in an interview with a TMCF representative. A resume is also required. Interested students should sign-up at their Counseling and Placement Office by Friday, Sept. 24. Sept. 30 Book Launch Set for Latest Issue of The Caribbean Writer

The official book launch of Vol. 24 of The Caribbean Writer is scheduled for 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 30, at the Great Hall on UVI's St. Croix campus. Participants will have the opportunity to meet the new editor, Dr. Opal Palmer Adisa, and hear some the contributors read their work. Autographed copies will be available for purchase. Music and refreshments will also be offered.

This issue of The Caribbean Writer features 80 pages of poetry, 200 pages of short stories, and personal essays by established and emerging writers from the Caribbean region, as well as the Caribbean Diaspora. It includes a special 70-page tribute to three of the Caribbean's intellectual giants who passed away last year, Rex Nettleford, Trevor Rhone and Wayne Brown. It also features more than 20 reviews of books by Caribbean writers and scholars.

CES Offers Clothing Construction Course on St. Thomas Beginning Oct. 5

A clothing construction class will be offered by the Family & Consumer Sciences Program of UVI's Cooperative Extension Service (CES) on the St. Thomas campus starting on Oct. 5. The free course will be offered from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays. It will take place in the CES's New House Building. Voices That Count Forum Set for October on St. Croix, St. Thomas

The Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD) will host the 7th annual Voices That Count policy forum on Oct. 4 and 5 on St. Croix and on Oct. 7 and 8 on St. Thomas.

The forum - titled Turn Voices Into Votes - brings together individuals with disabilities, service providers, advocates and Virgin Islanders who are running for public office. They will discuss issues that affect people with disabilities and work to promote systemic change. First-day morning sessions will focus on formulating questions to ask legislators. Afternoon sessions will consist of a forum for the Virgin Islands Delegate to Congress and gubernatorial candidates. On the second day, candidates for the Virgin Islands' legislature will have an opportunity to answer questions developed by the disability community. There will be four focus areas: education-transition, employment, ADA accessibility and visit-ability.

The forum will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. On St. Croix, it will take place on the UVI campus in the Great Hall of the North West Wing building. UVI's Dr. Opal Palmer Adisa Featured in Virgin Voices Online Magazine

Virgin Voices, the Caribbean Magazine for Lifestyle, Culture and Commerce, offers a look at UVI Humanities Professor Dr. Opal Palmer Adisa, the new editor of The Caribbean Writer, in its current online edition. The article titled "Woman of Many Genres" gives a short insight into the world of the award-winning poet and author. Read the article. The article is accompanied by an audio clip of the interview with Dr. Palmer Adisa. The current Virgin Voices also features the first of a new series of guest columns by members of the UVI faculty and staff. In it, Dr. Gloria Callwood, the principal investigator and director of UVI's Caribbean Exploratory Research Center, outlines the Center's focus on health disparities and previews its upcoming third annual Health Disparities Institute (see related item below). The Caribbean Writer 'Creative Luncheon' Series Continues Oct. 21

Dr. Opal Palmer Adisa, editor of UVI's The Caribbean Writer, invites students, faculty and staff, as well as the general public, to a "Creative Luncheon Series" during the fall semester. Luncheons are slated for noon on Oct. 21, Nov. 18, and Dec. 9. They will take place from noon to 1 p.m. in Room 102 of the North West Wing on UVI's St. Croix campus. Participants are asked to bring lunch and a poem or short piece of prose to share. Dr. Adisa will begin the sessions with a poem and then lead a short writing activity. Reichhold Offers Payroll Deduction for UVI Employee Ticket Purchases

Fall CLEP Test Schedule for St. Thomas Campus Announced

Students are advised that the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) test dates for the Fall 2010 semester have been finalized on the St. Thomas campus. CLEP tests will be administered on Sept. 30, Oct. 13, Oct. 26, Nov. 12, and Nov. 18, in the CATS computer lab (CA Building Room 123).

Students can register for the test at the front desk of the Office of Access and Enrollment Services, located on the first floor of the Administration and Conference Center. Test candidates must report to the test site no later than 9:30 a.m. on each test day with appropriate identification and form of payment. Acceptable forms of identification include a current driver's license, state or federal ID, a current passport, tribal ID card, naturalization card or certificate of citizenship.

The cost associated with CLEP is $77 per test (payable to College Board) and an additional administrative fee of $15 (payable to UVI prior to the test date). Payment must be made in the form of check, money order, or credit card; cash will not be accepted.

New Insurance Rates Approved for 2010-2011

An overview of UVI's group health insurance rates for fiscal year 2010-2011, which are effective Oct. 1, 2010, were distributed to the UVI faculty and staff via e-mail on Monday, Sept. 6, by UVI Director, Employees Benefits & Immigration Services Veda Richards. The Government of the Virgin Islands has approved an overall increase of 7.3 percent for health insurance coverage with CIGNA HealthCare. Click here for details. The e-mail information also included details of United Health Care/Spectera coverage, which has decreased the rates for the vision care plan by 12 percent.

UVI will continue to pick up 50 percent of the total increase and pay approximately 75 percent for employee coverage. This year, UVI will also pick up 45 percent of the total cost for family coverage while staying within the allotted budget for health insurance. CIGNA HealthCare to Exit Puerto Market, UVI Benefits Alert Issued

CVI's Benefits Administration Office has announced that, effective Dec. 31, 2010, CIGNA HealthCare will exit the Puerto Rico market for network based medical plans. This means any services provided in Puerto Rico, effective Jan. 1, 2011, will be considered Out-of-Network under UVI's current Open Access Plus (OAP) plan. For details, view this UVI Benefits Alert. CELL Offers Human Resources Certification Course on St. Thomas, St. Croix

Human Resource professionals who wish to obtain nationally recognized certification can now take advantage of a preparatory course offered by UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center. The course will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. starting Monday, Oct. 4, at the UVICELL Center on the St. Thomas campus. On St. Croix, sessions will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. starting Tuesday, Oct. 5, at the Joseph A. Simpson Building in Frederiksted.

The certification review course provides a solid foundation for meeting human resource challenges found in today's demanding work environment and prepares professionals to achieve their Professional in Human Resources (PHR®) or Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR®) designation. Certification is awarded by the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI) and signifies that human resource professionals have achieved the industry certification that sets them apart as true professionals in their field.

UVI CELL to Host Workshop for New Managers on Oct. 13

UVI Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center will host one-day workshops for new managers from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 13, on St. Thomas and St. Croix. The session is titled "Making the Transition into Management." On St. Thomas, the workshop will be held at the UVICELL Center on the UVI campus. On St. Croix, it will be available at the Joseph A. Simpson Building, #23A Hospital Street in Frederiksted.

The workshops are part of a series being offered by the UVICELL in conjunction with the American Management Association (AMA). The sessions will provide valuable insight and strategies to help new managers prepare to assume and succeed in their role as supervisor. Participants will learn negotiation strategies, to set goals, how to motivate and coach effectively and employee training strategies.
