Emmy Winner GregAlan Williams Joins UVI for South Pacific; Auditions Open Tuesday

Auditions for actors in the upcoming UVI Theatre production of a Caribbean version of South Pacific are scheduled to begin Tuesday, Sept. 14. The Rodgers and Hammerstein's classic musical will be produced at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts in November. It will feature an Emmy Award-winning guest artist GregAlan Williams from the U.S. in the role of Emile deBecque. Open auditions - for members of the UVI family and the Virgin Islands community - are scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 14, through Saturday, Sept. 18, and by appointment. Auditions will take place at the UVI Little Theatre (CA Building on the St. Thomas campus) as follows: Tuesday - 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.; Wednesday - 7 p.m.; Thursday - 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.; Friday - Noon; Saturday - 10 a.m. In addition to actors and singers, the production needs chorus members, costumers, builders and painters, lighting and sound technicians, publicists and hairdressers, and makeup artists.

UVI Appoints Roderick Pullen St.Thomas Campus Security Chief

Roderick C. Pullen has been appointed chief of security for the University of the Virgin Islands St. Thomas campus. As chief of security, he is responsible for the safety and security of UVI students, employees, visitors to the campus, campus facilities and property.

Chief Pullen comes to UVI from the Community College of Baltimore County, where he served as chief of public safety, managing three main campuses and two extension centers for the last six years. Prior to that, he served as acting chief of campus police, lieutenant, and chief of police operations at Bowie State University. Chief Pullen also served 30 years in the Baltimore City Police Department, where he held positions that included detective sergeant, deputy district commander, and ultimately, unit commander of the Criminal Investigations Drug Enforcement Section. St. Thomas SGA Meet-the-Candidates Session Set Sept. 16; Election Set Sept. 22

The St. Thomas campus Student Government Association (SGA) will host a meet and greet forum for the 18 candidates who are vying for fall semester student government positions at 12:15 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 16, in the Dining Pavilion. The election is slated for 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 22.

UVI President Dr. David Hall will host a reception honoring new members of the St. Thomas UVI community at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 17. The reception will take place on the grounds adjacent to the President's guest house.

Students, Faculty, Staff Sought for Intramural Coed Volleyball on Both Campuses

UVI's Intramural Department will sponsor coed volleyball leagues on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses beginning in the near future. Games will be played on Tuesday and/or Thursday nights. UVI students, faculty and staff are encouraged to participate and to form teams. Teams will consist of 10 players, with no more than six on the court at a time. Teams must have a minimum of three female players on the court at all times.

The Caribbean Writer Plans 'Creative Luncheon' Series

Dr. Opal Palmer Adisa, editor of UVI's The Caribbean Writer, invites students, faculty and staff, as well as the general public, to a "Creative Luncheon Series" during the fall semester. Luncheons are slated for noon on Sept. 16, Oct. 21, Nov. 18, and Dec. 9. They will take place from noon to 1 p.m. in Room 102 of the North West Wing on UVI's St. Croix campus. Participants are asked to bring lunch and a poem or short piece of prose to share. Dr. Adisa will begin the sessions with a poem and then lead a short writing activity. UVI Faculty Advised to Back Up 2009 Blackboard Courses by Sept. 24

UVI's Information Technology Services advises all members of the faculty that they have until 3 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 24, to back up the contents of any 2009 courses offered via the Blackboard system. Blackboard's export process allows courses files to be saved to jump or external hard drives. After the Sept. 24 deadline, the Blackboard server will be cleared of all 2009 courses. Volunteers Sought for Coastweeks Beach Cleanup Sept. 25 at Brewers Bay

The Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup, locally known as "Coastweeks" will host a kick-off event from 8 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25, at Brewers Bay Beach on UVI's St. Thomas campus. Every year, Coastweeks runs throughout the month of October so that local groups, businesses and organizations have the opportunity to help clean a beach, gut, or coastal area of their choosing. Participants also contribute data to an international database about marine debris. Water, gloves and trash bags will be provided free of charge at the kick-off and throughout the duration of Coastweeks. A presentation about USVI natural resources and Coastweeks is available to participating groups prior to the clean-up event, upon request. St. Thomas Bookstore to Close for Inventory Sept. 27-30

The St. Thomas Campus Bookstore will be closed to allow for the end-of-fiscal-year 2009-2010 inventory from Sept. 27 through Sept. 30. The Bookstore will re-open on Friday, Oct. 1. All are encouraged to make the necessary purchases prior to Sept. 27. It is standard procedure to return all unsold textbooks to the publishers and vendors after Sept. 15, as a means of reducing the Bookstore carrying cost. All students who have not yet purchased textbooks are urged to do so on or before Sept. 15.

St. Croix SGA Seeks Candidates; Election Set Sept. 14

The elections committee of Student Government Association (SGA) on UVI's St. Croix campus will conduct the 2010-2011 freshman and special elections, at the Evans Center Library Terrace (700 Level) from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 14. The committee seeks students for various leadership roles including junior, sophomore and freshman senators.

Applications and election petitions are available in the Office of Student Activities. A mandatory meeting for candidates is scheduled at 11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 13, in Evans Center Room 716. A Meet-the-Candidates Forum is scheduled noon to 1 p.m. on Sept. 13. It will be held in the UVI Cafetorium. VI Writing Project Seeks Proposals for November Conference; Deadline Sept. 15

The Virgin Islands Writing Project invites the submission of proposals to be considered for presentation at its literacy conference scheduled for Nov. 1, on UVI's St. Croix campus. The conference theme is: "Inspiring Change and Empowering our Community through Literacy." It will focus on embracing literacy to change negative impressions and empowering the community to participate in the process.

Presenters are encouraged to develop unique and creative proposals related to the theme. Proposals should model best practices, provide useful information that participants can use in their classes, showcase effective and innovative practices, support collaboration, inquiry, and be as applicable as possible to a wide range of academic institution types.

Proposals must be received by Sept. 15. Proposals must be submitted through the online submission form. The primary contact on the proposal will be notified if the proposal has been accepted for presentation by Monday, Sept. 20. UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts will present a special St. John preview of the center's 2010-2011 season at a Business After Hours Event at The Marketplace at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 15. Town Hall Meeting on Health Insurance Slated for Sept. 15

A Town Hall Meeting to discuss health insurance premiums and the impacts of health care reform for all UVI regular, professional and administrative staff employees is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, Sept. 15. New Insurance Rates Approved for 2010-2011

An overview of UVI's group health insurance rates for fiscal year 2010-2011, which are effective Oct. 1, 2010, were distributed to the UVI faculty and staff via e-mail on Monday, Sept. 6, by UVI Director, Employees Benefits & Immigration Services Veda Richards. The Government of the Virgin Islands has approved an overall increase of 7.3 percent for health insurance coverage with CIGNA HealthCare. Click here for details. The e-mail information also included details of United Health Care/Spectera coverage, which has decreased the rates for the vision care plan by 12 percent.

UVI will continue to pick up 50 percent of the total increase and pay approximately 75 percent for employee coverage. This year, UVI will also pick up 45 percent of the total cost for family coverage while staying within the allotted budget for health insurance. Nominations Sought for Awarding of Honorary UVI Degrees; Deadline Sept. 17

The University of the Virgin Islands has established a policy regarding the awarding of honorary doctoral degrees to individuals who have demonstrated outstanding accomplishments. Any member of the UVI administration, faculty, student body, staff or Board of Trustees may nominate a person to be the recipient of an honorary degree.

Nominations are currently being accepted in the Office of the President and should be submitted in writing via e-mail submission to: honorarydegrees@uvi.edu or by fax at (340) 693-1005 and must include:

1. A letter of nomination

2. Completed nomination form

3. Curriculum Vitae of the nominee

4. A document that clearly delineates distinguished achievements and the impact of those achievements, including supporting documents (i.e. scholarly documents, magazine articles, newspaper articles, citations for major prizes, etc.

5. Other supporting documents as may be appropriate.

A nomination form and the policy approved by the UVI Board of Trustees for awarding honorary doctoral degrees was shared with the UVI community via e-mail on Sept. 7. Nominations will be accepted until the close of business on Friday, Sept. 17, 2010.

Volume 24 of The Caribbean Writer Sports New Editor and New Look

Volume 24 of The Caribbean Writer - The Literary Gem of the Caribbean - is hot off the presses with a new editor and a new look.

Bold and decisive, this issue of The Caribbean Writer features 80 pages of poetry, 200 pages of short stories, and personal essays by established and emerging writers from the Caribbean region, as well as the Caribbean Diaspora. The volume, edited for the first time by Dr. Opal Palmer Adisa, includes a special 70-page tribute to three of the Caribbean's intellectual giants who passed away last year, Rex Nettleford, Trevor Rhone and Wayne Brown. It also features more than 20 reviews of books by Caribbean writers and scholars.

St. Croix Biodiversity Film Fest to Focus on 'The Air We Breathe' on Sept. 23

The 2010 Year of Biodiversity Film Fest on St. Croix continues on Thursday, Sept. 23, with a free screening of the film "The Air We Breathe." The feature, from the National Film Board of Canada, focuses on how political choices and socio-cultural forces have led to a growing crisis of air pollution in major urban centers in Canada and the U.S. Writer, director and producer Jim Hamm produced the segment. The screening is set for 6 p.m. in Room 133 of the UVI Research & Extension Center on the St. Croix campus. Admission is free and no reservations are required. The festival is co-hosted by the St. Croix Environmental Association (SEA) and the University of the Virgin Islands Marine Advisory Service. Additional films are scheduled for Oct. 28 and Dec. 2.

UVI Wellness Center Grand Opening Set for Sept. 24 on St. Thomas Campus

A grand opening ceremony for the new Wellness Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus is scheduled for 2:45 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 24. Representatives from the U.S. Department of Interior will be in attendance, along with Gov. John deJongh, Jr., members of the UVI Board of Trustees and members of the V.I. Legislature.

Parliamentary Procedures Workshop Set Sept. 24 on St. Croix

Fall Student Research Symposium Set Sept. 26 on St. Thomas

UVI's College of Science and Mathematics and the Emerging Caribbean Scientists (ECS) programs will hold the annual Fall Student Research Symposium at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 26, in the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus.

The symposium is part of an effort to increase research training and promote excellence among UVI students. It provides an opportunity for students to display the results of their work from their summer research experiences and for the public to interact with them. Free Workshop on Creating School Gardens Planned on Sept. 28

UVI's Cooperative Extension Service on the St. Thomas campus will conduct a free workshop titled "Creating a School Garden" on Tuesday, Sept. 28. The workshop is designed for public, private and parochial school teachers, paraprofessionals and any authorized school representatives in the St. Thomas-St. John District. The workshop will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The workshop will be held in the first-floor conference room of UVI's Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. The workshop will focus on the steps needed to create a vegetable garden.

Involvement in co-curricular activities creates learning opportunities for students and the chance to increase their leadership skills and abilities. Matthew Thomas Serving as Interim Student Activities Supervisor on St. Thomas

UVI Associate Campus Executive Administrator for Student Affairs Dr. Doris Battiste has announced that Matthew Thomas is serving as the interim Student Activities Supervisor on the St. Thomas campus.

Thomas is a 2009 Graduate of the University of the Virgin Islands and holds a bachelor's degree in business management, with a concentration in computer applications. He served as vice president of the Student Government Association for two consecutive terms and was a Thurgood Marshall Scholarship recipient. CIGNA HealthCare to Exit Puerto Market, UVI Benefits Alert Issued

CVI's Benefits Administration Office has announced that, effective Dec. 31, 2010, CIGNA HealthCare will exit the Puerto Rico market for network based medical plans. This means any services provided in Puerto Rico, effective Jan. 1, 2011, will be considered Out-of-Network under UVI's current Open Access Plus (OAP) plan. For details, view this UVI Benefits Alert. 7th Voices That Count Forum Set for October on St. Croix, St. Thomas

The Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD) will host the 7th annual Voices That Count policy forum on Oct. 4 and 5 on St. Croix and on Oct. 7 and 8 on St. Thomas.

The forum - titled Turn Voices Into Votes - brings together individuals with disabilities, service providers, advocates and Virgin Islanders who are running for public office. They will discuss issues that affect people with disabilities and work to promote systemic change. First-day morning sessions will focus on formulating questions to ask legislators. Afternoon sessions will consist of a forum for the Virgin Islands Delegate to Congress and gubernatorial candidates. On the second day, candidates for the Virgin Islands' legislature will have an opportunity to answer questions developed by the disability community. There will be four focus areas: education-transition, employment, ADA accessibility and visit-ability.

The forum will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. On St. Croix, it will take place on the UVI campus in the Great Hall of the North West Wing building. On St. Thomas, the forum will be held at the Windward Passage Hotel.

Reichhold Offers Payroll Deduction for UVI Employee Ticket Purchases

UVI employees are encouraged use payroll deductions to purchase tickets to Reichhold Center for the Arts shows. Employees should visit the Reichhold Ticket Office to sign an authorization form. Fall CLEP Test Schedule for St. Thomas Campus Announced

Students are advised that the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) test dates for the Fall 2010 semester have been finalized on the St. Thomas campus. CLEP tests will be administered on Sept. 30, Oct. 13, Oct. 26, Nov. 12, and Nov. 18, in the CATS computer lab (CA Building Room 123).

Students can register for the test at the front desk of the Office of Access and Enrollment Services, located on the first floor of the Administration and Conference Center. Test candidates must report to the test site no later than 9:30 a.m. on each test day with appropriate identification and form of payment. Acceptable forms of identification include a current driver's license, state or federal ID, a current passport, tribal ID card, naturalization card or certificate of citizenship.

The cost associated with CLEP is $77 per test (payable to College Board) and an additional administrative fee of $15 (payable to UVI prior to the test date). Payment must be made in the form of check, money order, or credit card; cash will not be accepted.

CELL Offers Human Resources Certification Course on St. Thomas, St. Croix

Human Resource professionals who wish to obtain nationally recognized certification can now take advantage of a preparatory course offered by UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center. The course will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. starting Monday, Oct. 4, at the UVICELL Center on the St. Thomas campus. On St. Croix, classes began on Sept. 4. On St. Thomas, classes will be held 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Sept. 14, at the UVI-CELL Center on the St. Thomas Campus.

The Real Estate Sales course is designed to expose individuals to the real estate industry and specifically to prepare them for the Real Estate Salesperson licensing examination. A variety of topics will be covered including real estate theory, mathematics, USVI rules and regulations and all applicable sections of the V.I. Code.

CELL Workshops Aim to Enhance Presentation Skills

The UVI-CELL Center will host one-day workshops designed to enhance an individual's overall presentation skills and make a good impression on St. Thomas and St. Croix on Sept. 15. Individual sessions will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The St. Thomas workshop will take place at the CELL center on the UVI campus. On St. Croix, the workshop will be held at the Joseph A. Simpson Building, #23A Hospital Street in Frederiksted.

The workshops are part of a series offered by the UVI-CELL in conjunction with the American Management Association (AMA). Participants will be provided with tips overcome presentation fear, prepare for the presentation, communicate clearly while gaining the attention of the audience, elicit valuable feedback, avoid overloading the audience and much more.
