Lady Bucs, Buccaneers to Host UPR-Carolina in Home Openers Today

UVI's Lady Bucs and male Buccaneers basketball squads play the home openers of their 2011 season today (Thursday, Feb. 10), in the Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus. They will host the women's and men's teams from the University of Puerto Rico-Carolina. The Lady Bucs take to the court first in a game scheduled for 6 p.m. The men's game will follow. The UVI Dance Team and cheerleading squad will also perform. Admission to both games is free.

The Lady Bucs began their regular season with two games on the road last week. They fell (55-31) to American University of Puerto Rico and defeated the University of Central Bayamon (44-14).

Thursday's men's game is their regular season opener. Following that, the Buccaneers play again on the home court at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 12, when they host University of Puerto Rico-Humacao.

Public Input Sought to Improve the Climate Change/Public Health Message

Virgin Islanders will have a chance to recommend effective ways to communicate important information to the general public about how to adapt to climate change and related public health issues at a town hall-style meeting from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 11, at UVI. The town hall meeting is titled "Climate Change Impacts and Public Health in the Virgin Islands." The meeting - which is hosted by researchers working at UVI's Caribbean Exploratory and Research Center (CERC) - will be available in the first floor conference room in the Administration and Conference Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus and in Evans Center Room 401 on the St. Croix campus.

The meeting will also offer a review of the available information about linkages known to exist between climate change (extreme weather, flooding) and public health issues (fish poisoning - ciguatera - and dengue fever) in the Virgin Islands.

Man Up Conference Moves to St. Croix - Preliminary Slide Show Available

More than 1,500 young men turned out to the St. Thomas session of the Man Up Male Empowerment Conference on Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011. The Man Up Conference continues today (Thursday, Feb. 10) on the St. Croix campus.

UVI Accepting Applications for the Master of Arts in Psychology Program

The University of the Virgin Islands is accepting applications from students interested in enrolling in its Master of Arts in Psychology with a concentration in counseling program for the Fall 2011 semester. The MAP program is designed to provide students with the necessary academic knowledge base, problem solving skills and experiential opportunities to allow them to work in a variety of social service and counseling settings. Financial Aid Awareness Week Continues on St. Croix, Opens Feb. 15 on St. Thomas

A week of financial aid awareness activities on UVI's St. Croix campus will conclude on Friday, Feb. 11, with a round-up session titled "Ask the Specialist." The session will be held in the Cafetorium from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Financial Aid Awareness Week activities will open on the St. Thomas campus on Monday, Feb. 15, with a Financial Aid Open House. The activities on both campuses are being offered by UVI's Financial Aid Offices and the College Access Challenge Grant.

The St. Thomas Financial Aid Open Houses is slated from 10 a.m. to noon on Monday, Feb. 15, in the Administration and Conference Center. A Financial Aid Night - with a session titled "How to Pay for College" - for high school juniors and seniors and their parents will follow from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, in the first-floor conference room of the Administration and Conference Center.

UVI Cheerleaders Plan Car Wash on St. Thomas Campus on Feb. 13

UVI's cheerleaders will host a car wash from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 13, at the south parking lot (just below the Bookstore parking lot. The cost will be $15 for cars and $20 for SUVs and jeeps.

Mocko Jumbies Sought for UVI Carnival Parade Contingent; Training Offered

UVI Professor Dr. David Smith is seeking members of the UVI community - students, faculty, staff and alumni - who would like to march in the 2011 Carnival Parade as a mocko jumbie. Dr. Smith, who annually organizes a mocko jumbie contingent from the University, is offering to train interested persons. "I have trained young kids to grandmas since the late 80s," writes Dr. Smith. AKA Sets Fundraising/Recycling Fashion Show for Feb. 26 on St. Croix Campus

A fundraiser and recycling fashion show - Beauty and the Beat - will be held at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26, at the Cafetorium on UVI's St. Croix campus. The show is sponsored by the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. The show will include performances by Dennis De Mennis, Mada Nile, Stylee Band, Ellery Evans, Sparkle Lite Twirlers, Music in Motion and the UVI Dance Squad. The show's recycling theme will contribute the sorority's environmental stewardship and sustainability initiative - Going Green by Living Green. Tickets are $7 in advance and $10 at the door. They are available from AKA members and at the UVI Bookstore.

TMCF Scholarship and Internship Opportunities for UVI Students

Wells Fargo Offers Business and Finance Scholarships

The TMCF and Wells Fargo Financial will provide financial assistance to outstanding male and female African American students who are interested in careers in the business and finance industry. In addition to excelling in the classroom, these individuals should be leaders in the community and exemplify the values of volunteerism and service.

The Wells Fargo Scholarship provides academic scholarships of $4400 to students attending TMCF member schools with a focus on business or finance majors; although all majors are welcome to apply. This scholarship is eligible for annual renewal provided the scholars meet the GPA requirement and continue to demonstrate unmet financial need. Teach for America Paid Summer Internships Available

Teach for America is offering paid summer internship opportunity for several available operations coordinator positions. Operations coordinators manage summer training institutes to ensure that corps members are able to focus on their own professional development and student achievement. They receive a guaranteed salary ranging from $2,500 to $3,000, with room, board, and a portion of travel expenses also provided.

Teach For America will operate summer institutes this year in Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, Phoenix, and the Mississippi Delta. UVI's Information & Technology Services has posted its FY2010 Annual Report: "Onward and Upward On The Path To Greatness." The report - which features a photo of the ITS St. Thomas staff - discusses the investments and accomplishments of the past fiscal year and provides guidance on the projects, strategies and budgets for FY2011. Students will find information on how the Student Technology Fee was allocated. Mandatory orientation sessions for new student employees on UVI's St. Thomas campus are scheduled in the conference room in Roupp House, downstairs from the Student Employment Office, as follows:

Street Beat to Bring Hip Hop Dance Show to the Virgin Islands

Street Beat, a critically acclaimed percussion and hip hop dance show that plays to sold-out audiences around the country, will present shows at Island Center on St. Croix, on Feb. 18, and the UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts on St. Thomas on Feb. 19. The shows are part of the Reichhold Center's Family Series and are presented along with the Virgin Islands Department of Education. Street Beat employs trash cans, paint buckets and auto parts to create its unique hip sound, while adding high energy and astonishing acrobatics.

Students Invited to Enter TMCF Black History Essay Contest; Deadline Feb. 21

UVI students are encouraged to participate in a Black History Month Essay Contest sponsored by the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF). The contest is open to all students attending TMCF member schools, including UVI. The subject of the essay is: The credibility and relevance of HBCUs has been increasingly under attack. What can be done to prove adversaries wrong and protect the existence of our schools?

Essays are limited to 500 words. One entry per student is allowed. The submission deadline is Feb. 21, 2011. The first-place prize is an iPad, the second-place winner will receive an iPod Touch and an iPod Nano goes to the third-place entry. IRP Announces Schedule for National Survey of Student Engagement at UVI

UVI's Office of Institutional Research & Planning (IRP) has announced it will administer the 2011 National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) at UVI in collaboration with the Indiana University Center for Postsecondary Research from Feb. 8 through March 23, 2011.

The survey is designed to collect feedback from UVI freshman and senior students on both campuses. It will focus on the quality of student interactions with faculty and peers, how students spend their time, and what they gain educationally from classes and other activities. The results will help the University to assess the quality of its undergraduate programs and show where improvement is needed. Students selected for the survey will receive customized letters of invitation and survey packages from the Provost. Those who respond to the survey by April 28, 2011, will be entered into a gift drawing.

Health Services on St. Thomas Campus offers Stress Relief Hour

UVI's Health Services Office on the St. Thomas campus offers free, 10 minute chair massage sessions to any UVI students, faculty and staff on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The "Health Services Stress Relief Hour" massage sessions feature natural healing resonance (sound and toning) therapy. CLEP Test Schedule for Spring 2011 Announced for St. Croix Campus

College Level Examination Program (CLEP) tests will be administered on the following schedule for the Spring 2011 semester on UVI's St. Croix campus.

Students can register for the tests in the Access and Enrollment Services Office in Evans Center Room 811. Testing begins promptly at 9 a.m. on each test date. Latecomers will not be allowed to take the test. The cost associated with CLEP tests is $77 per test; make check or money order payable to CLEP. An additional administrative fee of $15 is payable to UVI prior to the test date. A separate check and/or money order must be written for each test. Cash will not be accepted. CLEP Test Schedule for Spring 2011 Announced for St. Thomas Campus

Students are advised that the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) test dates for the Spring 2011 semester have been finalized on the St. Thomas campus. CLEP tests will be administered on Feb. 25, March 8, March 24 and April 11, in the CATS computer lab (CA Building Room 123). Students can register for the test at the Office of Access and Enrollment Services' front desk, located on the first floor of the Administration and Conference Center.

Test candidates must report to the test site no later than 9:30 a.m. on test days with appropriate identification and form of payment. Acceptable forms of identification include a current driver's license, state or federal ID, a current passport, tribal ID card, naturalization card or certificate of citizenship. The cost associated with CLEP is $77 (payable to College Board) per test and an additional administrative fee of $15 (payable to UVI prior to the test date). UVICELL to Offer Bookkeeping Course Beginning in March

The University of the Virgin Islands - Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center will offer courses for individuals interested in acquiring basic bookkeeping skills beginning in March on St. Thomas and St. Croix.

On St. Thomas, Intro to Bookkeeping will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. every Tuesday and Wednesday starting March 1, at the UVICELL Center on the St. Thomas campus. On St. Croix, classes will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. every Wednesday and Thursday starting March 2, at the UVICELL Center in Frederiksted.

Participants will learn to perform basic bookkeeping functions such as journalizing and posting business transactions, preparing basic financial statements, reconciling bank statements, preparing payroll and much more.

Basic Quickbooks Training Offered by UVICELL

UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center is offering a course for individuals and small businesses who are interested in learning to use the full-featured small business accounting software - QuickBooks.

Introduction to QuickBooks will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays beginning Feb. 26, at the UVICELL Center on St. Croix. Participants will learn to set up a standard list of accounts, manage accounts receivable and payable, reconcile bank accounts, track credit card transactions and much more.

UVICELL Offers Free Grant Writing Seminar

The University of the Virgin Islands' Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center will offer a free seminar for anyone who has an interest in learning how to get grant funding. The seminar is titled Effective Proposal Development Process. It will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 10, at the UVICELL Center on St. Thomas.

The two-hour seminar will provide a brief overview on developing successful grant proposals and will serve as a precursor to the upcoming Grants and Proposal Writing Skills course which will also be offered in March. Participants will receive information on the entire grant writing process from laying the groundwork to reporting requirements.

Intermediate Bookkeeping Course Offered by UVICELL

UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center will offer a course for individuals interested learning bookkeeping in order to function as an entry-level bookkeeper or manage their own books.

On St. Thomas, Intermediate Bookkeeping will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays beginning March 29. On St. Croix, the course will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays starting March 30. All sessions will be held at the UVICELL Center on St. Thomas and the UVICELL Center in Frederiksted, St. Croix.

Participants will to prepare basic financial statements, journalize and post accrual, reconcile a bank statement, prepare payroll and much more.
