Special Invitation to Attend MAN UP Conference Issued to Males at UVI

UVI's Brothers with A Cause are extending a special invitation to all male UVI students, as well as to male members of the faculty and staff, to register for and attend next week's MAN UP Male Empowerment Conference. UVI faculty members and supervisors are asked to extend consideration to males who wish to participate.

The conference will be held in two sessions. On St. Thomas, the conference is slated from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 8, at the Sports and Fitness Center. On St. Croix, the conference is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 10, on the campus grounds. The keynote speaker for the event will be Farrah Gray. Mr. Gray was raised on the impoverished South Side of Chicago, where he defied the odds and became a self-made millionaire by the age of 14. He has since become a respected author and speaker, committed to the development of values such as leadership, integrity and scholarship.

The internationally recognized R&B singing, rapping and songwriting duo known as Rock City (brothers and St. Thomas natives Timothy and Theron Thomas) is slated to perform.

Meeting Set for St. Thomas Class of 2011 Graduates on Feb. 4

Town Hall Meeting on Climate Change and Public Health in the VI Set Feb. 11

The Virgin Islands public is invited to participate in a town hall-style meeting titled "Climate Change Impacts and Public Health in the Virgin Islands" from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 11, at the University of the Virgin Islands' St. Croix and St. Thomas campuses.

The meeting will offer a review of the available information about linkages known to exist between climate change and public health in the Virgin Islands. Participants will be asked to join in a discussion about these linkages. They will also be encouraged to offer recommendations on how researchers might create effective methods of communicating important information about adapting to climate change (extreme weather, flooding) and public health issues (fish poisoning - ciguatera - and dengue fever).

The town hall sessions will be available to the public - via video conference - in the first floor conference room in the Administration and Conference Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus and in Evans Center Room 401 on the St. Croix campus.

IRP Announces Schedule for National Survey of Student Engagement at UVI

UVI's Office of Institutional Research & Planning (IRP) has announced it will administer the 2011 National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) at UVI in collaboration with the Indiana University Center for Postsecondary Research from Feb. 8 through March 23, 2011.

The survey is designed to collect feedback from UVI freshman and senior students on both campuses. It will focus on the quality of student interactions with faculty and peers, how students spend their time, and what they gain educationally from classes and other activities. The results will help the University to assess the quality of its undergraduate programs and show where improvement is needed. Students selected for the survey will receive customized letters of invitation and survey packages from the Provost. Those who respond to the survey by April 28, 2011, will be entered into a gift drawing.

Street Beat to Bring Their Hip Hop Dance Show to the Virgin Islands

Street Beat, a critically acclaimed percussion and hip hop dance show that plays to sold-out audiences around the country, will present shows at Island Center on St. Croix, on Feb. 18, and the UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts on St. Thomas on Feb. 19. The shows are part of the Reichhold Center's Family Series and are presented along with the Virgin Islands Department of Education. Street Beat employs trash cans, paint buckets and auto parts to create its unique hip sound, while adding high energy and astonishing acrobatics.

UVI Financial Aid Awareness Activities Will Include High School Juniors, Seniors

Financial Aid Open Houses are scheduled on Feb. 8, on the St. Croix campus and Feb. 15, on the St. Thomas campus. The open houses will serve as the kickoff of a week of financial aid awareness activities on UVI's respective campuses. The activities are being offered by UVI's Financial Aid Offices and the College Access Challenge Grant.

The Open Houses are slated from 10 a.m. to noon on both campuses. Each campus will also host Financial Aid Nights, with a session titled "How to Pay for College" for high school juniors and seniors and their parents. The St. Croix campus Financial Aid Night will run from 6 to 8 p.m. on Feb. 8, in the Great Hall of the North West Wing. On St. Thomas, Financial Aid Night is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. on Feb. 15, in the first-floor conference room of the Administration and Conference Center.

Additional activities continue through Friday, Feb. 11, on St. Croix, and through Friday, Feb. 18, on St. Thomas. Mr. Kool Competition on St. Thomas Campus Seeking Participants

Individuals interested in vying for the title of UVI Mr. Kool on the St. Thomas campus are encouraged to pick up an application from the Student Housing Office. The deadline to apply as a contestant in the UVI Mr. Kool Competition is 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 4. The Mr. Cool Competition is tentatively scheduled for April 16. Free HIV/AIDS Testing Offered Feb. 7 on St. Thomas Campus

Monday, Feb. 7, 2011, has been designated Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day on UVI's St. Thomas campus. Free HIV/AIDS testing will be available for any members of the UVI community from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 7, at the UVI Bookstore parking lot. Free VIUCEDD Workshops for Siblings/Care Takers of Disabled Set for Feb. 7 & 9

Workshops for the siblings, family members, caretakers and service providers of persons with developmental and mental health disabilities will be offered at UVI on St. Thomas on Monday, Feb. 7, and on Wednesday, Feb. 9, on St. Croix. The workshops are hosted by the University of the Virgin Islands-Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD).

Both sessions will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The St. Thomas workshop will take place in UVI's Administration and Conference Center. On St. Croix the workshop will be held in the Great Hall, located in the North West Wing Building.

The workshops will address the specific concerns and the unique needs of siblings and family members. Continuing support and future care planning will also be covered.

Rotaract Schedules Carwash for Feb. 12 at Tutu Park Mall

The Rotaract Club on UVI's St. Thomas campus will conduct a car wash and bake sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 12, at Tutu Park Mall - in the Office Max parking lot. Car washes cost $10 for exterior and $15 for interior and exterior. For details call (340) 692-1959 or 514-0709.

Health Services on St. Thomas Campus offers Stress Relief Hour

UVI's Health Services Office on the St. Thomas campus offers free, 10 minute chair massage sessions to any UVI students, faculty and staff on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The "Health Services Stress Relief Hour" massage sessions feature natural healing resonance (sound and toning) therapy. CLEP Test Schedule for Spring 2011 Announced for St. Croix Campus

College Level Examination Program (CLEP) tests will be administered on the following schedule for the Spring 2011 semester on UVI's St. Croix campus.

Students can register for the tests in the Access and Enrollment Services Office in Evans Center Room 811. Testing begins promptly at 9 a.m. on each test date. Latecomers will not be allowed to take the test. The cost associated with CLEP tests is $77 per test; make check or money order payable to CLEP. An additional administrative fee of $15 is payable to UVI prior to the test date.   A separate check and/or money order must be written for each test. Cash will not be accepted. CLEP Test Schedule for Spring 2011 Announced for St. Thomas Campus

Students are advised that the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) test dates for the Spring 2011 semester have been finalized on the St. Thomas campus. CLEP tests will be administered on Feb. 9, Feb. 25, March 8, March 24 and April 11, in the CATS computer lab (CA Building Room 123). Students can register for the test at the Office of Access and Enrollment Services' front desk, located on the first floor of the Administration and Conference Center.

Test candidates must report to the test site no later than 9:30 a.m. on test days with appropriate identification and form of payment. Acceptable forms of identification include a current driver's license, state or federal ID, a current passport, tribal ID card, naturalization card or certificate of citizenship. The cost associated with CLEP is $77 (payable to College Board) per test and an additional administrative fee of $15 (payable to UVI prior to the test date). UVICELL to Offer Basic QuickBooks Training on St. Thomas

The University of the Virgin Islands - Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center will offer a course for individuals and small businesses who are interested in learning to use QuickBooks, the full-featured small business accounting software.

Introduction to QuickBooks will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays beginning Feb. 2, on the St. Thomas Campus. Participants will learn how to set up a standard list of accounts, manage accounts receivable and payable, reconcile bank accounts, track credit card transactions and much more.

UVICELL to Offer Bookkeeping Course Beginning in March

The University of the Virgin Islands - Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center will offer courses for individuals interested in acquiring basic bookkeeping skills beginning in March on St. Thomas and St. Croix.

On St. Thomas, Intro to Bookkeeping will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. every Tuesday and Wednesday starting March 1, at the UVICELL Center on the St. Thomas campus. On St. Croix, classes will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. every Wednesday and Thursday starting March 2, at the UVICELL Center in Frederiksted.

Participants will learn to perform basic bookkeeping functions such as journalizing and posting business transactions, preparing basic financial statements, reconciling bank statements, preparing payroll and much more.
