June 30 Deadline Set for Applications for Heyward G. Hill Memorial Scholarship

Applications are being accepted by UVI's Office of the Provost through June 30, 2011, for the $5,000 Heyward G. Hill Memorial Scholarship for the 2011-2012 academic year. Full-time, matriculated junior and senior UVI students, with a 3.0 GPA and an interest in international affairs are eligible. Students must be U.S. citizens. Application forms and information on all requirements, including an essay on how applicants think the scholarship will help them pursue a career in international affairs, have been forwarded via e-mail to UVI students. They are also available from the Scholarships page of the Financial Aid section of the UVI website - www.uvi.edu - and from this direct link.

UVI Human Resources Office to be Closed on Friday, June 17

UVI's Human Resources Office will be closed on Friday, June 17. All HR staff will be attending a retreat that day. Individuals who need immediate assistance on Friday should contact the Office of Administration and Finance at x1400 or 1402.

St. Thomas Campus Operations Unit to Close for Retreat on Friday, June 17

This is to advise that St. Thomas campus Operations Unit (including the Associate Campus Administrative Operations Office, the UVI Bookstore, Cashiering Services and the Mailroom) will be closed from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, June 17, for a staff retreat. Arrangements will be made for the usual pick-up and delivery of mail to offices.

CES to Offer Swine Production Workshop on June 17 on St. Thomas

Summer Institute Graduates 29 Future Global Leaders

There was cause for celebration at the University of the Virgin Islands' Chase Auditorium Wednesday, June 1, as the 17th Annual Summer Institute for Future Global Leaders produced yet another batch of quality student graduates from the Caribbean and around the world. During the graduation ceremony 29 students received Global Leadership certificates and three hours of college or graduate school credit after having completed the summer program's intensive two-week leadership course. Alumni Invited to Help Name New Alumni E-newsletter

UVI alumni have been invited to participate in a contest to name a new E-newsletter which is being designed by the Alumni Affairs and Public Relations offices. "We are looking for a creative, catchy name for the newsletter which will attract interest from the community, friends and supporters," wrote Linda I. Smith ('98, '03), in a recent e-mail to alumni. Smith, who is director of Annual Giving and Alumni Affairs, said the winner will receive two reserved tickets to the upcoming production of Patrick Brown's hilariously scary who-dun-it "Midnight at Puss Creek." Performances of the play, which features Jamaican "King of Comedy" Oliver Samuels, is scheduled for July 9 and 10 at UVI's Reichhold Center for the arts.

All contest submissions must be sent - via e-mail - to mbartle@uvi.ed. Submissions must be sent by midnight on Thursday, June 30.

St. Thomas SGA Seeking Applications for Various Committee Chair Positions

The Student Government Association (SGA) on UVI's St. Thomas campus is accepting applications from interested students to fill the following positions: Vice President of Membership (Public Relations); Queens Committee Chair; Sports Committee Chair; Grievance Committee Chair; Social and Cultural Committee Chair; Food Committee Chair; Publications (Yearbook) Committee Chair; Elections Committee Chair; and Black Heritage Committee Chair.

The SGA serves as the voice of students. Elected representatives aim to work to ensure that student life at UVI is at its optimum. Interested students should send a detailed resume along with a letter of interest, via e-mail, to sgastt@myuvi.net. Applications should be submitted by July 15. Applications will be reviewed for approval by the SGA Student Senate. Appointed individuals will form part of the official SGA inauguration ceremony which is scheduled during the Fall Semester.

VI SBDC Service Center on St. John Plans Open House on June 17

 

The Virgin Islands Small Business Development Center will conduct an open house for its St. John Service Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, June 17. The SBDC Service Center is located in UVI's new St. John Academic Center, which is housed in the Marketplace in Cruz Bay, St. John.

 

The public is invited to learn about the wide array of services the SBDC Center provides for existing business and for entrepreneurs who want to begin businesses. The SBDC offers free, one-on-one counseling, seminars, workshops and training sessions on a wide variety of business topics. No Dinner Service at St. Thomas Campus Dining Pavilion from June 6 through June 17

The Dining Pavilion on UVI's St. Thomas campus will be open for breakfast and lunch only from Monday, June 6, through Friday, June 17. There will be no dinner service on those dates. Regular service will resume on June 20. For more information call 693-1138.

Oliver Samuels Returns to the Reichhold Center in July

UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts welcomes back Oliver Samuel, the Jamaican "King of Comedy," in Patrick Brown's hilariously scary who-dun-it? - "Midnight at Puss Creek." The play opens at the Reichhold Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus at 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 9. A second performance is slated for 8 p.m. on Sunday, July 10.

"Midnight at Puss Creek" is a clever tale of conspiracy, family dysfunction and revenge. Oliver Samuels plays Edgar, an ambitious son. His mother, wealthy Miss Zelda, is on her deathbed and loved ones have gathered at the home (Puss Creek) as she nears her final breath. Miss Zelda's snooty granddaughter, Rita, along with other family members waste no time in letting their true colors show. The play features favorite actors from other Samuels plays including Glen "Titus" Campbell, Camille Davis, Sharee McDonald-Russell and Courtney Wilson.

Reichhold Center Extra: Jonathan Butler to Perform June 19 at Reichhold Center

Partners for Health St. Thomas/St. John will present a live concert by two-time Grammy Award Nominee Jonathan Butler at 7 p.m. on Sunday, June 19, at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts. The concert will feature guest appearances by Denise Barclay and John Stoddart. Summer Research Symposium Slated for July 29 on St. Thomas

UVI's Summer Research Symposium is slated for 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday, July 29. It will be held in the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. The symposium provides a showcase for a student research in STEM disciplines, with faculty at the University of the Virgin Islands, as well as at other institutions. (STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics.) UVI Board Approves $60 Million HBCU Loan for Capital Projects

The University of the Virgin Islands Board of Trustees held its quarterly meeting on Saturday, June 11, on the St. Thomas campus. The Board unanimously approved a University proposal to borrow $60 million from the Historical Black Colleges and Universities Capital Financing Program, which will be used to refund UVI's 1999A Bonds and Series 2004A Bonds and to finance a 100-bed residence hall on the St. Thomas Campus. The HBCU loan will also fund improvements to teaching laboratories, classrooms, faculty offices, and conference rooms on the Albert A. Sheen campus on St. Croix, and will be used to improve campus facilities that have been approved by the Building and Grounds Committee of the Board of Trustees.

UVI Accepting Applications for the Master of Arts in Psychology Program

The University of the Virgin Islands is accepting applications from students interested in enrolling in its Master of Arts in Psychology with a concentration in counseling program for the Fall 2011 semester. The MAP program is designed to provide students with the necessary academic knowledge base, problem solving skills and experiential opportunities to allow them to work in a variety of social service and counseling settings. This graduate Psychology program seeks to prepare practitioners to use the science of psychology for the promotion of human well-being, specifically in the provision of psychological services to children, adolescents, and families in the mental health, judicial, and educational systems. It provides some with a stepping stone toward licensure.

UVI Community Encouraged to Visit University's Official Facebook Page

Members of the UVI community are reminded that the University now maintains an official page on the popular Facebook social networking website. It is available at www.facebook.com/UVI.edu. The page allows the University to share information about UVI events and activities. One of the most recent additions is a link to an online version of the UVI 2011 Commencement program, which features the lists of all graduates.

Everyone with a Facebook account is encouraged to visit the page and select the "Like" button. That will allow Facebook users to recommend news items, photos or videos they find interesting to family and friends. Financial Aid Office Offers Summer 2011 Financial Aid Update

UVI's Office of Financial Aid has posted Summer 2011 Financial Aid eligibility criteria and documentation on the UVI web site. With the passage of the FY 2011 spending bill by Congress, the second scheduled Pell Grant award will remain in effect only for the Summer 2011 term. The second scheduled Pell Grant will be eliminated for Summer 2012. Science 100 Offered During Summer Session II on St. Thomas Campus

UVI students who need to retake the course SCI 100 - The Natural World: The Caribbean - can do so during Summer Session II on the St. Thomas campus. SCI 100 is a Freshman Experience course and general education requirement for students entering UVI as freshmen. Students who have earned a C-, D or F in the course may retake the course to earn a better grade. Summer Session II classes run from June 23 to July 29. SCI 100 will meet Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 to11:50 a.m. for lectures, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 to 11:30 a.m. for labs.

SIP Program to Host Free Emergency Planning Workshops for Businesses

 

The Safety in Paradise (SIP) Program will be host free Emergency Action Planning workshops to assist U.S.V.I. businesses prevent, prepare for, respond to and recover from fire, tropical storms, tsunamis, workplace violence and other emergency situations that may threaten a business or its employees. The SIP Program is administered by the University of the Virgin Islands - Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center.

 

On St. Croix, the workshop will be held from 9:30 a.m. to noon on Friday, June 24, at the Great Hall on UVI's Albert A. Sheen Campus. On St. Thomas, the workshop will be held 9:30 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, June 28, at UVI's Administration and Conference Center.

 

The half-day workshops will focus on the development of an organized plan for reducing the adverse impact of emergencies on businesses. It will also address the importance of maintaining compliance with OSHA regulations and increasing the likelihood that businesses can effectively resume operations after an emergency.
