UVI Community Invited to Join in Celebration of the Life of Junie Violenes

Members of the UVI community are invited to join in a tree planting activity followed by a celebration of the life of Junie Violenes from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, April 29, at the Student Activities Center on the St. Thomas campus. A tree will be planted in honor of Violenes on the St. Thomas campus golf course at 5 p.m. in the area of the Recreation Center. The celebration of life, including the lighting of candles, poetry reading, music and tributes, will follow at 5:30 p.m. in the Student Activities Center. The center is located between the North and Middle Residence Halls, and to the east of the School of Education.

Violenes, a UVI alumna and long-time employee, died on Thursday, April 21. Funeral services will be held at Wesley Methodist Church, in Anna's Retreat on St. Thomas, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 30.

UVI Senate to Meet on Friday, April 29

The next meeting of the UVI Senate is scheduled for Friday, April 29. Access will be available from the first-floor conference room of the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus and from Evans Center Room 807 on the Albert A. Sheen campus on St. Croix. Items on the agenda include discussion on UVI policies in these areas: sexual harassment, the Student Code of Conduct, consultancy and business interest, disclosure of information and fraud. There will also be a presentation by UVI Internal Auditor Stacey Chados. A presentation is tentatively scheduled by President Dr. David Hall and Dr. Haldane Davies on expectations of the Shared Governance and Planning Workshop to be held May 9. Information on the UVI Senate's participation in the upcoming commencement ceremonies may also be shared.

End of Semester and Service Awards Ceremony for Part-time Faculty Set May 5

UVI will honor 11 part-time faculty members with an End of Semester and Service Award Ceremony at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 5. The University community is invited to attend and support the part-time faculty. The ceremony will be available via videoconference in Business Room B 110 on St. Thomas and in Evans Center Room 401 on St. Croix.

National Library Week Essay Contest Winners Announced on St. Croix

The National Library Week (NLW) Committee at UVI's campus on St. Croix has announced the winners of the St. Croix 2011 NLW Essay Contest. The contest theme was "Create Your Own Story @ Your Library." The winners and their prizes are: 1st Place - Ayoko Allen ($75 UVI bookstore gift certificate and a jump drive); 2nd Place - Vanessa Allahar ($25 UVI bookstore gift certificate and a jump drive); and 3rd Place - Rochella Davis (Portfolio and a jump drive). Golden Key Inducts 26 Students on UVI's Albert Sheen Campus on St. Croix

The Golden Key International Honour Society on UVI's Albert Sheen Campus on St. Croix inducted 26 new student members in a ceremony on Tuesday, April 26. Golden Key is the world's premier collegiate honor society. Golden Key recognizes outstanding academic achievement and connects high-achieving individuals locally, regionally and globally with lifetime opportunity, reward & success.

The inductees were: Wael Abduljaber, Valda Austries, Vanessa Battiste, Tasha Belardo, Salal Cook, Nicholas Cromwell, Joanna Delano, Miguel Emanuel, Afiya Felix, Anthea Francis, Jmail George, Kimora Gregoire, Sarah Greenaway, Jenell Hendrickson, Joseph Irwin, Tammi Jackson, Tobias Ortega-Knight, Aliyah Parris, Sunil Rivera, Jaqueline Russell, Khuma Simmonds, Kara Spencer, Ghadeer Taha, Shauna Tucker, Raydiance Watts Clarke and Mandisa Williams.

Four individuals were named honorary members of Golden Key during the ceremony. These included Cheryl Francis, wife of Lieutenant Governor Gregory Francis and Founder of the Stop the Bleeding Foundation; Dr. Dante Galiber, UVI Associate Professor of Journalism, Dr. Gillian Royes; and Colleen Williams, principal of the Ricardo Richards Elementary School.

University Community Invited to Join UVI 2011 Carnival Troupe

Members of the UVI community are invited to join the UVI 2011 Carnival troupe which will participate in the St. Thomas Carnival Adult's Parade on May 7. This year UVI goes green with the theme: "Let our Cultural Spirit Enliven Carnival 2011 as UVI Goes Green."

St. Thomas Campus Bookstore Sets Book Buy Back Dates

The Book Buy Back program at the St. Thomas campus UVI Bookstore will be available from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, April 28 and 29, and again Monday through Wednesday, May 2 to 4. 'The Caribbean Writer' Issues Fourth National Poetry Month Newsletter

UVI's "The Caribbean Writer" (TCW) continues its celebration of National Poetry Month with the release of a fourth newsletter. This issue - TCW April 27, 2011 - includes a Virgin Islander portrait of First Lady Cecile deJongh. It also features an article on UVI First Lady Marilyn Brathwaite-Hall. Among the student poetry featured are works by St. Thomas English major Latasha S. Martin and St. Croix English major Ramona D. King. National Safe Boating Course Underway at Nisky Center on St. Thomas

The St. Thomas Sail and Power Squadron is now offering the free National Safe Boating Course to interested persons. Classes are offered each Mondays and Wednesdays at the Small Business Development Center training facility in Nisky Center. The comprehensive course covers everything from boating basics to the latest in electronic navigation. There is an $80 charge for materials, which include several books, CDs and navigational plotting equipment. Successful completion of the course is a requirement for individuals registering or renting boats according to instructor Tom McCoy. For more information, contact McCoy at (340) 774-2715.

Aspen Santa Fe Ballet to Perform May 21 at the Reichhold Center

The widely acclaimed Aspen Santa Fe Ballet will bring exhilarating dance to UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts at 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 21. The company's presentation is described as contemporary ballet with a European twist. The Aspen Santa Fe Ballet features 12 dancers and is led by directors Tom Mossbrucker and Jean-Philippe Malaty. It performs year-round home seasons in both Aspen and Santa Fe, and has made landmark appearances at the famed Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, the Kennedy Center, New York City Center's Fall for Dance Festival, the American Dance Festival, Wolftrap, and the Joyce Theater in New York City, as well as performing in virtually every corner of the United States.

Appreciation Dinner, Ball for 2011 Graduates on St. Croix Slated for May 7

An appreciation dinner and ball for the 2011 graduating class at UVI Albert A Sheen Campus on St. Croix is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 7, at the Great Hall of the North West Wing. The ball is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. The evening is designed to give special recognition to the parents, spouses, family, friends, faculty and staff who have aided the upcoming graduates on their academic journey. Attire for the event is formal. Admission is $25 for graduates, $30 for general admission, and $10 for persons age 10 and under. The deadline to purchase tickets is May 5. They are available from Necola Charles in the Campus Executive Administrator's office, Sana Hamed, Miguelina Valdes, Joel Dorsett and Sasha Green.

Academic Jams on St. Thomas and St. Croix Sponsored by BWC and CATS

UVI's Brothers With A Cause (BWC) organization, in coordination with UVI's Campus Advising and Tutorial Services (CATS), is sponsoring academic jams on the University's campuses on St. Thomas and St. Croix. The jams, which continue through Friday, April 29, are designed to create an atmosphere that allows students to sharpen their understanding of course materials in preparation for final exams through peer tutoring, group study and counseling.

Tutors are available to work with students individually or in small groups. Please note that sessions are scheduled between April 25 and April 29 at various times from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. These sessions will be very helpful. BWC and CATS will try and assist with transportation for late review sessions (between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.). Please review the schedule.

Students who wish to attend a review session that takes place after 7 p.m., and who may need transportation home on St. Thomas, must contact Dr. Angela McGhee in CATS - (340) 693-1222 - before hand to make arrangements. The University of the Virgin Islands Cooperative Extension Service (CES) invites all St. John residents to its Caribbean Healthy Home Workshop scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 28, at the St. John Academic Center, located in the Market Place in Cruz Bay. UVI Bookstore on St. Croix Set's Sale and 'Mia's Make-Over' for April 29

The UVI community is invited to participate in "Mia's Make-Over Day" at the UVI Bookstore on St. Croix from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, April 29. During the day, UVI Bookstore computer buyer and assistant Mia Keularts will undergo a make-over by professional makeup artist Luz Caban, complete with new clothing, hairstyle and jewelry. The make-over is in appreciation for Keularts' recent support during the transition to new management at the Bookstore, according to Nereida Washington, Associate Campus Executive Administrator for Operations. "Mia stepped in and provided tremendous support in all areas of the Bookstore's operations," Washington said.

Scholarships Available for Advanced Degrees, Cultural Projects

The board of directors of the Virgin Islands Academic & Cultural Awards Endowment Scholarship is accepting applications through May 16, for its scholarship program. Virgin Islands residents pursuing advanced degrees are encouraged to apply. Funding is also available for VI residents conducting research and projects designed to promote cultural awareness in the territory. Recipients may receive up to $10,000 per year.

The scholarship program was created by the Virgin Islands Legislature in 1970 to assist residents with financial support to advance their academic and professional studies.   'Perspectives' Features Work by 30 UVI Students

BUZZ Media, a student-led media group, launched its latest product, a collection of literary and visual works created by UVI students in the form of a book entitled: "Perspectives: A Collection of UVI Voices" on April 19 on the St. Thomas campus. The event featured readings by UVI students: Jamaica Hamilton, Recaldo Richardson and Chenelle Kuntz. Members of the UVI administration and faculty are expected to be in attendance, along with student writers and their families.

"Perspectives" is a publication aimed at showcasing the literary and visual work of students at UVI. It is also aimed at being a teaching tool that will motivate other students to aspire to become better writers and artists. The book includes the work of 30 UVI students who responded to the call for submissions at the beginning of the spring semester. Their submissions included poems, narratives, personal essays, short stories and research papers. The publication is available at the UVI Bookstore on St. Thomas. TMCF Seeking Scholarship Applications for 2011-2012 School Year

The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) has opened its scholarship application process to all students seeking financial assistance for the 2011-2012 school year. TMCF scholarship recipients are awarded annually to students meeting the TMCF eligibility criteria for scholarship. Awards are made per semester based on a verification process designed to ensure students are meeting academic expectations and have an unmet financial need. All classifications of students are invited to apply for a TMCF scholarship.

UVI Accepting Applications for the Master of Arts in Psychology Program

The University of the Virgin Islands is accepting applications from students interested in enrolling in its Master of Arts in Psychology with a concentration in counseling program for the Fall 2011 semester. The MAP program is designed to provide students with the necessary academic knowledge base, problem solving skills and experiential opportunities to allow them to work in a variety of social service and counseling settings. This graduate Psychology program seeks to prepare practitioners to use the science of psychology for the promotion of human well-being, specifically in the provision of psychological services to children, adolescents, and families in the mental health, judicial, and educational systems. It provides some with a stepping stone toward licensure.

Deadline to Apply for UVI Graduate Math Program for Teachers Is April 30

The third cohort of UVI's Master of Arts in Mathematics for Secondary Teachers (MMAT) program is scheduled to begin in August 2011. The program is for teachers of mathematics at the secondary level and prospective teachers with undergraduate degrees in mathematics. April 30, 2011 is the application deadline for the program. UVI Accepting Applications for 'Math Behind the Science' Free Summer Program

UVI is accepting applications for its 2011 "Math Behind the Science" summer bridge program. The free program (previously called Summer Bridge2Calculus) is designed to enhance the mathematics preparedness of college-bound students who are interested in pursuing careers in science, mathematics, engineering, technology or medicine.

Math Behind the Science will prepare students to enter UVI's introductory calculus course and provide a foundation for success in that important course. Field trips, guest speakers and workshops are integrated into the five-week summer program. Sessions begin on June 20, and end with an awards ceremony on July 29. Recent high school graduates and current Math Skills students are eligible to participate in this program.

UVICELL to Offer Basic QuickBooks Course on St. Thomas Beginning May 10

UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center will offer a course for individuals and small businesses who are interested in learning to use the full-featured small business accounting software QuickBooks beginning May 10. Introduction to QuickBooks sessions will be held 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the CELL Center on UVI's St. Thomas Campus. Participants will learn how to set up a standard list of accounts, manage accounts receivable and payable, reconcile bank accounts, track credit card transactions and much more.

CELL Offers Intermediate Quickbooks Course on St. Croix Beginning May 14

UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center is offering a course for experienced users of the full-featured small business accounting software QuickBooks. Intermediate QuickBooks will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays beginning May 14. Sessions will be held at the UVICELL Center in Frederiksted, St. Croix.

 

The training is a continuation of the material covered in the Introduction to QuickBooks course. Participants will gain a better understanding of their financial records and how to utilize this information to make managerial decision for their companies.

UVICELL to Begin Grant Writing Series of Seminars on St. Croix on May 14

 

UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center will offer a series of grant writing seminars for individuals interested in developing successful, fundable grants.

 

The first course in the series - Grant and Proposal Writing Skills - Module 1 - will be offered from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 14 and May 21, 2011. The sessions will be held at the UVICELL Center in Frederiksted, St. Croix.

 

The course will provide seasoned and beginning grant writers with effective grant-writing strategies to craft successful grant proposals. Participants will learn how to organize the grant writing process, prepare the basic elements of a grant application, locate funding sources and much more.

CELL Plans Workshops on Managing Change in Organizations on May 18

UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center will host one-day workshops on St. Thomas and St. Croix titled "Planning and Managing Change" on Wednesday, May 18. The workshop will center on the importance of proactively managing change in organizations and avoiding knee-jerk reactions that undermine efforts to deal change. The workshops will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at both islands. On St. Thomas, it will be held at the CELL Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus. On St. Croix, the workshop will take place at the Joseph A. Simpson Building, #23A Hospital Street, in Frederiksted.

The workshop is part of a series offered by UVICELL in conjunction with the American Management Association (AMA). Participants will learn to manage the change process; help others move successfully through the process; diagnose the impact of change; determine key success factors; monitor change implementation and much more. The AMA - a recognized leader in management education for more than 75 years - provides a full range of management development and educational services to individuals, companies and government agencies worldwide, including 486 of the Fortune 500 companies.
