New Faculty Orientation Slated for Aug. 17-19; Faculty Convocation Set for Aug. 19
New members of the UVI faculty will be attending orientation sessions on UVI's campuses on St. Thomas and St. Croix from Aug. 17 through 19. Sessions on St. Thomas will be held in Business Education Room 110. On St. Croix, the sessions will take place in Evans Center Room 401. On Aug. 17 and 18, the sessions will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. On Aug. 19, the sessions will start at 10:30 a.m. and end with Faculty Convocation. Faculty Convocation is scheduled to begin at 12:15 p.m. in Business Education 110 on St. Thomas and in Evans Center Room 401 on St. Croix. As the fall semester gets underway, UVI's Bookstores on St. Thomas and St. Croix are offering extended operating hours.

ITS Student Handbook Available to New and Returning Students
UVI's Information and Technology Services (ITS) has published the Fall 2011 issue of the ITS Student Handbook. The handbook is designed to give new and returning students an overview of the technology services and resources available at the University. US Sail & Power Advanced Boating Course Offered Beginning Aug. 22
The US Sail and Power Squadron Advanced Basic Boating Course will be offered on St. Thomas beginning Aug. 22. The course has six sessions and a final test session. Classes meet from 6 to 8 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays in Room 222 of the Red Cross Office (above Dominos Pizza) at Nisky Center. Those who pass the course earn certificates required for boat registration in the Virgin Islands. Certification is also required for UVI students who operate research vessels. The course is free. Volunteers Sought for UVI Special Alumni Phonathon - Phase III
Volunteers are sought for Phase III of the UVI Special Alumni Phonathon, scheduled for Aug. 29 through Sept. 1. Sponsored by UVI's Office of Annual Giving and Alumni Affairs, the Phonathon has become the primary venue for communicating with UVI alumni. Phase I of the effort, which connected with alumni through a national calling program, was officially launched on March 1, and is ongoing. Phase II was held from May 23-26 with over 100 volunteers contributing their valuable time reaching special alumni. Special alumni are persons who attended UVI for a minimum of 12 months and, although they did not graduate from UVI, maintain a special interest, tie or experience with the institution.
The phonathon allows the University to reconnect with special alumni, update their contact and career information, share the latest University information, and secure donations which continue to fund scholarships for UVI students. Individuals, as well as groups, are encouraged to join the effort as volunteers. Each volunteer receives a special gift and dinner each night of the phonathon. Prizes will be given to the top callers each night and a special "Director's Challenge" has been issued to reward the volunteer who raises the most pledges and highest amount of gifts during the four-night effort. The winner will receive a two-night stay at Treasure Isle Hotel in Tortola, BVI. Reichhold Center for the Arts will launch another exciting
season of entertainment on Thursday, Sept. 1, when it unveils the
2011-2012 season lineup during a St. Thomas/St. John Chamber of
Commerce Business After Hours session scheduled from 5:30 to 7:30
p.m. in the Reichhold Theatre. The 2011-2012 season will be

The Upward Bound Offices on UVI's St. Thomas campus and the Albert A. Sheen campus on St. Croix are closed for the period Monday, Aug. 8, through Friday, Sept. 2. The offices will reopen on Tuesday, Sept., 6.

CERC Announces Inaugural Christensen Health Disparities Lecture Series
The Caribbean Exploratory NIMHD Research Center for Excellence at the University of the Virgin Islands will present the inaugural Donna M. Christensen Lecture Series during its Fourth Annual Health Disparities Institute, Oct. 19-21, on the island of St Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The lecture series is named for the Honorable Donna M. Christensen, eighth term member of the U.S. House of Representatives, representing the U.S. Virgin Islands. Dr. Christensen is the first female physician in the history of the U.S. Congress, the first woman to represent an offshore Territory, and the first woman Delegate from the U.S. Virgin Islands. Also featured are a color-coded status bar and the UVI Emergency Hotlines that offer campus-specific information when emergency procedures are required. UVI CELL to Host Real Estate Sales Course Beginning in August
Individuals interested in learning more about the real estate industry are urged to register for the Real Estate Sales course offered by the University of the Virgin Islands - Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center.
On St. Thomas, classes will be held 6-9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Aug. 16, at the UVICELL Center on the St. Thomas campus. On St. Croix, classes will be held 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturdays beginning Aug. 20, at the Joseph A. Simpson Building, #23A Hospital Street in Frederiksted.
The Real Estate Sales course is designed to expose individuals to the real estate industry and specifically prepares them for the Real Estate Salesperson licensing examination. A variety of topics will be covered including Real Estate Theory, Mathematics, USVI Rules and Regulations and all applicable sections of the VI Code.

UVICELL to Offer Human Resources Certification Program in September
Human resource professionals who wish to obtain nationally recognized credentials can now take advantage of a preparatory course being held by the University of the Virgin Islands - Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center. The Human Resources Certification Program is scheduled to begin on Monday, Sept.12, on St. Thomas. Persons interested in participating in the program should submit applications to the UVICELL Center by Monday, Aug. 22.
The review course provides a solid foundation for meeting human resources challenges found in today's demanding work environment and prepares professionals to qualify for Professional in Human Resources (PHR) or Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) designations. The certifications are awarded by the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI) and signify that human resources professionals have achieved the industry certification that sets them apart as true professionals in their field.

UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center in conjunction with the American Management Association (AMA) will host workshops designed to improve written communication skills on St. Croix and St. Thomas on Sept. 22-23. SBDC to Host COPE Conference Series for Business Superstars on St. Thomas
The COPE Caribbean Conference Series for Business Superstars will conduct two days of training at the VI Small Business Development Center at Nisky Center on St. Thomas on Aug. 19 and 20. The sessions are free and include breakfast and lunch. They will run from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day. The conference goal is to provide skill-building events for business women throughout the Caribbean, helping them to get Clear-Organized-Productive-Efficient (COPE). A cadre of professional speakers will focus on improving personal productivity, financial, and technology skills for business. Men are also welcome. Small Business Development Center to host 'Business Plan' Course
The VI Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will offer the NXLEVEL® - How To Write A Business Plan course beginning on Aug. 22, on St. Thomas. The five-week, 30-hour course is designed for entrepreneurs who want to expand an existing business or start a new business. Participants will receive professional guidance in a classroom setting and one-on-one counseling taught by a certified NXLEVEL® instructor.
The course will be held from 6-9 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, beginning on Aug. 22 and ending on Sept. 26. It will be held at the SBDC St. Thomas training facility in Nisky Center, Suite 720. The cost is $399. A limited number of scholarships may be available for those who apply. People interested in participating are encouraged to register because enrollment is limited.
