Fashion Show Sept. 2 Will Support Miss UVI's College Queens Competition
Miss UVI Daniella Henry will represent the University and
the Virgin Islands at the National Black College Alumni Hall of
Fame's Conference from Sept. 22-26, 2011, in Atlanta, Ga. She will
also participate in the conference's annual Competition of College
Queens scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 24. To help support her
preparation for the competition, a fund-raising fashion show - the
Freshman Fall Fashion Explosion: What's H.O.T.T. This Fall - will
be held at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 2, at the Cafetorium of UVI
Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. All proceeds from the show
will be used to help Miss UVI prepare for her journey to

The show will showcase styles from Alliance Clothing, Eagle's Fashion, the UVI Bookstore, Strictly the Best Men & Kids Wear, Garment City, Rainbow, Crucian Apparel, Marianne's, Hair Unlimited Beauty Supply & Salon, Stilettos & Bow Ties, Accessorize, and the S.T. B. Golden Surprise. The doors will open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. sharp. General Admission is $12, and $10 for students with I.D.s. Tickets will be sold exclusively at the UVI Bookstore.
UVI Special Alumni Phonathon - Phase III Begins Aug. 29; Volunteers Sought
Volunteers are needed for Phase III of the UVI Special Alumni Phonathon, set for Aug. 29 through Sept. 1. The Phonathon has become the primary venue for communicating with UVI alumni. Phase I of the effort connected with alumni through a national calling program. It was launched March 1, and is ongoing. Phase II was held May 23 to 26 with over 100 volunteers contributing their valuable time. Special alumni are persons who attended UVI for a minimum of 12 months and, while they did not graduate from UVI, they maintain a special interest, tie or experience with the institution.
The Phonathon allows the University to reconnect with special alumni, update contact and career information, share the latest University news, and secure donations which fund scholarships for UVI students. Individuals, as well as groups, are encouraged to volunteer. Each volunteer receives a special gift and dinner each night of the Phonathon. Prizes will be awarded to top callers each night and to the overall top caller. Prizes for volunteers have been contributed by the community. UVI Senate Slates First Fall Meeting for Sept. 16
The UVI Senate will convene its first meeting of the academic year from 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 16, according to Senate Co-chair Dr. Nancy Morgan. Specific room locations will be confirmed prior to the meeting. The UVI community is encouraged to contact any senator with suggested agenda items for consideration.
'Power Up St. Croix' Assistive Technology and Health Fair Scheduled for Aug. 31
An Assistive Technology and Health Fair will be hosted on Wednesday, Aug. 31, by the Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD) and the VI Department of Human Services (DHS). Titled "Power Up St. Croix," the expo and fair will target senior citizens and persons with disabilities. It will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Great Hall, on UVI's Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. Homebound participants or others unable to attend in person may also view the fair activities live via VIUCEDD Channel online at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/viucedd.
VIUCEDD Associate Director Dr. Charles Beady will open the fair. A brief presentation covering the inroads made for persons with disabilities since VIUCEDD brought awareness and assistive technology resources to the territory in 1994 will follow. "Power Up St. Croix" will feature the latest in assistive technology - augmentative, daily living, hearing, iPad, vision devices, computers and software. A financial planning workshop, wheelchair aerobics, presentations on ear care and hearing instruments, and vision and hearing screenings are also planned. Reichhold Center for the Arts to Unveil 2011-2012 Season on Sept. 1
Reichhold Center for the Arts will launch another exciting season of entertainment on Thursday, Sept. 1, when it unveils the 2011-2012 season lineup during a St. Thomas/St. John Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours session scheduled from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Reichhold Theatre. The 2011-2012 season will be dedicated to UVI's 50th anniversary. The Business After Hours session includes a gourmet buffet, music and the Chamber's famous $2 cocktail bar. CERC Announces Inaugural Christensen Health Disparities Lecture Series
The Caribbean Exploratory NIMHD Research Center for Excellence at the University of the Virgin Islands will present the inaugural Donna M. Christensen Lecture Series during its Fourth Annual Health Disparities Institute, Oct. 19-21, on the island of St Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The lecture series is named for the Honorable Donna M. Christensen, eighth term member of the U.S. House of Representatives, representing the U.S. Virgin Islands. Dr. Christensen is the first female physician in the history of the U.S. Congress, the first woman to represent an offshore Territory, and the first woman Delegate from the U.S. Virgin Islands. Also featured are a color-coded status bar and the UVI Emergency Hotlines that offer campus-specific information when emergency procedures are required. UVICELL to Offer Human Resources Certification Program in September
Human resource professionals who wish to obtain nationally recognized credentials can now take advantage of a preparatory course being held by the University of the Virgin Islands - Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center. The Human Resources Certification Program is scheduled to begin on Monday, Sept.12, on St. Thomas. Persons interested in participating in the program should submit applications to the UVICELL Center by Monday, Aug. 22.
The review course provides a solid foundation for meeting human resources challenges found in today's demanding work environment and prepares professionals to qualify for Professional in Human Resources (PHR) or Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) designations. The certifications are awarded by the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI) and signify that human resources professionals have achieved the industry certification that sets them apart as true professionals in their field.

Business Writing and Grammar Skills Workshops on St. Thomas, St. Croix
UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center in conjunction with the American Management Association (AMA) will host workshops designed to improve written communication skills on St. Croix and St. Thomas on Sept. 22-23. Business Writing and Grammar Skills Made Fun and Easy will be held 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The workshop will be offered at the UVICELL Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus and at the Joseph A. Simpson Building, #23A Hospital Street in Frederiksted on St. Croix.
Participants will learn to sharpen their competitive edge through clear, well-focused writing; perfect grammar and usage skills; avoid embarrassing mistakes; polish documents so they are inviting and easier to read; spot common usage errors; and more. Small Business Development Center to host 'Business Plan' Course
Due to the inclement weather, this course will now begin on Wednesday, Aug. 24
The VI Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will offer the NXLEVEL® - How To Write A Business Plan course beginning on Aug. 22, on St. Thomas. The five-week, 30-hour course is designed for entrepreneurs who want to expand an existing business or start a new business. Participants will receive professional guidance in a classroom setting and one-on-one counseling taught by a certified NXLEVEL® instructor.
The course will be held from 6-9 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, beginning on Aug. 22 and ending on Sept. 26. It will be held at the SBDC St. Thomas training facility in Nisky Center, Suite 720. The cost is $399. A limited number of scholarships may be available for those who apply. People interested in participating are encouraged to register because enrollment is limited.
