Public Viewing, Memorial for Prof. Emanuel Slated at Sports & Fitness Center on Aug. 8
The University community is invited to a public viewing and memorial for UVI Professor Gene Emanuel from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 8, in the UVI Sports and Fitness Center on St. Thomas. Prof. Emanuel died Thursday evening, July 28.
A Facebook tribute page -www.facebook.com/GeneEmanuelMemorialUVI - is now available for the posting of photos and ongoing tributes. Comments and photos can be posted after viewers "like" the page. A news release and photo are featured on the UVI homepage - direct link.
A Gene Emanuel Scholarship Fund is being established. Donations to the fund will be accepted at the memorial service on Monday and may also be sent to the UVI Office of Institutional Advancement, #2 John Brewers Bay, St. Thomas, V.I. 00802. Checks should be made payable to the University of the Virgin Islands, with "Gene Emanuel Scholarship Fund" in the memo section.
Prof. Emanuel's funeral service and burial will take place on St. Croix next week. Arrangements on St. Thomas are being handled by the Davis Funeral Home.
Trustees for VIAC Awards Endowment to Meet Aug. 18 on St. Thomas
The Board of Trustees for the V.I. Academic and Cultural Awards Endowment will meet at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 18, in the third-floor conference room of UVI's Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. The agenda will include a discussion on applicants for funding for the 2011-12 academic year. An update on current and past recipients will also be provided. An executive session is expected. UVI to Co-host International Federation of Library Associations Pre-Conference
University of the Virgin Islands Libraries, in collaboration with the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA), Acquisitions and Collection Development Section, will host a pre-conference satellite meeting on Aug. 10-12, in the Administration and Conference Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus. The meeting's theme is "Maximizing collection development of electronic and print media in the digital environment." Approximately 40 international and local participants, and presenters representing Denmark, Austria, Astonia, USA, Saudi Arabia, Germany, Mexico, Caribbean islands and other countries, are expected to attend. This pre-conference is a lead up the 77th IFLA World General Congress to be held immediately following in San Juan, PR. Fall Semester 2011 Orientation Schedules for New Students Available
The Fall Semester 2011 Orientation Schedules for new UVI students have been posted on the Admissions section of the UVI website - direct link. Orientation begins on Sunday, Aug. 14, with students arriving at residence halls and continues through Aug. 19. The keynote speaker on both campuses will be noted motivational speaker Marlon Smith. He will speak on Monday, Aug. 15, on St. Croix and on Tuesday, Aug. 16, on St. Thomas.
New Faculty Orientation Slated for Aug. 17-19; Faculty Convocation Set for Aug. 19
New members of the UVI faculty will be attending orientation sessions on UVI's campuses on St. Thomas and St. Croix from Aug. 17 through 19. Sessions on St. Thomas will be held in Business Education Room 110. On St. Croix, the sessions will take place in Evans Center Room 401. On Aug. 17 and 18, the sessions will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. On Aug. 19, the sessions will start at 8:30 a.m. and end with Faculty Convocation. Faculty Convocation is scheduled to begin at 12:15 p.m. in Business Education 110 on St. Thomas and in Evans Center Room 401 on St. Croix. UVI's Fall Semester Classes to Begin Aug. 22, 2011; Registration Details
Returning Students: Online registration for returning students is now underway. It continues through Friday, Aug. 12. To register, returning students must confer with their advisors to have courses approved and to receive login PINs for access to UVI's BanWeb system. Details - class schedules and information sheets - are available from the Registrar's section of the UVI website - www.uvi.edu. The deadline for returning students to pay tuition and fees is 4 p.m. on Aug. 12.
New Students: New student registration is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 17, at UVI's campuses on St. Thomas and St. Croix. New student registration at the St. John Academic Center will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 16.
Late Registration: Late registration is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 18 and Friday, Aug. 19. A $75 late fee will be charged for late registration.
UVI to Offer Wait Listing Option for Limited Number of Classes
The University of the Virgin Islands Access and Enrollment Services Office, as part of its customer service improvement plan, introduced a Banner Wait Listing for a limited number of classes on Monday, July 25. With this new feature, students who opt to be wait-listed for a class in which they were unable to register will receive an automatic e-mailed notification when a place becomes available. Students will have 24 hours from the time the e-mail is generated in which to register for the class.
Students are encouraged to choose the Wait Listing option, as it will also provide the University with useful planning information on classes that are in high demand. For more information on St. Thomas or St. Croix send e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org.
UVI to Offer 46 Video Conference Classes on St. John for Fall Semester
The University of the Virgin Islands will begin offering classes at the St. John Academic Center for the Fall 2011 semester. A total of 46 credit courses will be offered using video conference technology at the newly opened center located on the third floor of The Marketplace shopping center. UVI's Fall 2011 semester begins on Aug. 22.
New student registration at the St. John Academic Center will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 16. Online registration is underway for matriculated or current UVI students for Fall semester classes.

Marathon Airing of WTJX TV's 'The Home Grown Garden' Program Set Aug. 7
Virgin Islands Public TV WTJX (Channel 12) plans a marathon presentation of "The Home Grown Garden" show programs on Sunday, Aug. 7. The marathon begins at 10 a.m. UVI's Cooperative Extension Service invites the UVI community to tune in for this special airing of all 16 segments in the series. The series was produced by WTJX in collaboration with the Cooperative Extension Service and the VI Department of Agriculture. The "Home Grown" projects represents an outreach effort and television program designed to address several critical issues, such as the extremely high cost and poor quality of imported vegetables in the Virgin Islands, a desire to encourage healthy eating habits and a need to help Virgin Islands' residents save money.
Faculty, Staff, Students Invited to Join Hampton U. Videoconference on Global Education
UVI faculty, staff and students are invited to participate (via videoconference) in a UNCF/Mellon Teaching and Learning Institute scheduled at Hampton University from Aug. 10 to 12. The theme for the institute is "Extending a Legacy of International Presence and Outreach at HBCUs - Social Justice and Education Policy for the Twenty-First Century." Sessions will explore ways to enhance global education at HBCUs.
The institute will feature a discussion of UVI's Institute for Future Global Leaders, which is considered a leading model in global education, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 12. A discussion of how UVI's program equips students with building blocks to become effective leaders in a global environment will be led by Dr. Carlyle Corbin and Dr. Solomon Kabuka. Dr. Corbin has served as an adjunct faculty to the Summer Institute since 1995, and Dr. Kabuka is the director of UVI's Summer Institute.

Volunteers Sought for UVI Special Alumni Phonathon - Phase III
Volunteers are sought for Phase III of the UVI Special Alumni Phonathon, scheduled for Aug. 29 through Sept. 1. Sponsored by UVI's Office of Annual Giving and Alumni Affairs, the Phonathon has become the primary venue for communicating with UVI alumni. Phase I of the effort, which connected with alumni through a national calling program, was officially launched on March 1, and is ongoing. Phase II was held from May 23-26 with over 100 volunteers contributing their valuable time reaching special alumni. Special alumni are persons who attended UVI for a minimum of 12 months and, although they did not graduate from UVI, maintain a special interest, tie or experience with the institution.
The phonathon allows the University to reconnect with special alumni, update their contact and career information, share the latest University information, and secure donations which continue to fund scholarships for UVI students. Individuals, as well as groups, are encouraged to join the effort as volunteers. Each volunteer receives a special gift and dinner each night of the phonathon. Prizes will be given to the top callers each night and a special "Director's Challenge" has been issued to reward the volunteer who raises the most pledges and highest amount of gifts during the four-night effort. The winner will receive a two-night stay at Treasure Isle Hotel in Tortola, BVI. Also featured are a color-coded status bar and the UVI Emergency Hotlines that offer campus-specific information when emergency procedures are required. The issue takes a close look at UVI's new Summer Bridge program which is deisgned to help jump-start the college careers of graduating high school students planning to attend UVI this fall. Also featured is UVI student Delia Miller who enters the Boston University School of Medicine this fall as a first-year medical student. UVI's CELL Center to Offer Free Energy Efficiency Workshops in August
Educating the community about ways to save money and energy is the goal of a series of free workshops to be hosted by the University of the Virgin Islands - Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center. The Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) workshops are designed to promote energy efficiency and encourage the use of renewable energy. The first workshops in the series - Energy Efficiency for Residential Consumers - is scheduled for 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 6. Workshops will be held at the UVI-CELL Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus and at the UVI-CELL Center in Frederiksted on St. Croix. Workshops designed specifically for the business community will follow from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 11, in the same island locations.
Participants are urged to bring copies of their most recent WAPA bills for a chance to obtain a free energy monitor which can be used to track energy consumption and savings. UVI CELL to Host Real Estate Sales Course Beginning in August
Individuals interested in learning more about the real estate industry are urged to register for the Real Estate Sales course offered by the University of the Virgin Islands - Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center.
On St. Thomas, classes will be held 6-9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Aug. 16, at the UVICELL Center on the St. Thomas campus. On St. Croix, classes will be held 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturdays beginning Aug. 20, at the Joseph A. Simpson Building, #23A Hospital Street in Frederiksted.
The Real Estate Sales course is designed to expose individuals to the real estate industry and specifically prepares them for the Real Estate Salesperson licensing examination. A variety of topics will be covered including Real Estate Theory, Mathematics, USVI Rules and Regulations and all applicable sections of the VI Code.

UVICELL to Offer Human Resources Certification Program in September
Human resource professionals who wish to obtain nationally recognized credentials can now take advantage of a preparatory course being held by the University of the Virgin Islands - Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center. The Human Resources Certification Program is scheduled to begin on Monday, Sept.12, on St. Thomas. Persons interested in participating in the program should submit applications to the UVICELL Center by Monday, Aug. 22.
The review course provides a solid foundation for meeting human resources challenges found in today's demanding work environment and prepares professionals to qualify for Professional in Human Resources (PHR) or Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) designations. The certifications are awarded by the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI) and signify that human resources professionals have achieved the industry certification that sets them apart as true professionals in their field.

SBDC to Host COPE Conference Series for Business Superstars on St. Thomas
The COPE Caribbean Conference Series for Business Superstars will conduct two days of training at the VI Small Business Development Center at Nisky Center on St. Thomas on Aug. 19 and 20. The sessions are free and include breakfast and lunch. They will run from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day. The conference goal is to provide skill-building events for business women throughout the Caribbean, helping them to get Clear-Organized-Productive-Efficient (COPE). A cadre of professional speakers will focus on improving personal productivity, financial, and technology skills for business. Men are also welcome.
