UVI to Issue Eco-Friendly Annual Fund Kick-Off Mailer
The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) will initiate its Annual Fund campaign for fiscal year 2012 with a personalized mailing sent to all UVI alumni and potential donors during the week of Dec. 5, 2011. For the first time, the mailing will utilize a re-usable, eco-friendly, full-color envelope made of recycled paper to reach potential donors. The envelope will enable recipients to return their donation in the same envelope that contained the solicitation letter.
"This new approach will enable UVI to reduce the costs of outreach, while reaching twice as many individuals," said UVI Vice President for Institutional Advancement Dionne V. Jackson. A news release is available from the homepage of the UVI website - http://www.uvi.edu - and from this direct link.
UVI Schedules Math, English Placement Tests for Incoming Students
The University of the Virgin Islands will conduct placement testing for incoming Spring 2012 students on the following schedule. Incoming on-island students are urged to take advantage of this early December testing.

Documentary on Organic Farming Slated Thursday, Dec. 8, at ACC on St. Thomas
UVI's Extension service will present a free documentary film "What's Organic About Organic," by filmmaker Shelly Rogers, at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 8, in the first-floor conference room of the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. The 59-minute documentary provides a close-up look at the men and women involved in organic farming and their fight to stay afloat as they compete against mega-farms. The filmmaker, Rogers, and Marty Mesh, a certified organic grower from Florida, will be in attendance and participate in a discussion following the screening. Applications are now available for UVI students who wish to participate in the National Student Exchange Program. 4-H Christmas Ornament Festival for Children Set Dec. 11 on St. Croix
The UVI community and the Virgin Islands public are invited to participate in Cooperative Extension Services' annual 4-H Christmas Ornament Festival at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 11, The festival will take place in the Great Hall on UVI's Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. While the activity is most appropriate for children ages 8 to 14, younger children (ages 5 to 8) can have a great experience if accompanied by a parent or responsible adult. Each child will have the opportunity to craft seven ornaments - six are theirs to take home, the seventh ornament will be placed on the 4-H's annual "Giving Tree," which is destined to bring Christmas joy to a community who young residents might not otherwise be able to enjoy the holidays.
Along with ornament making, the day will include Christmas carols, special guest appearances, and a small taste of the holidays. There is a nominal fee of $7.50 per child to cover the cost of materials and supplies. For details contact Sarah Dahl-Smith at (340) 692-4084.

The November issue covers the introduction of the first electric vehicle - dubbed the Bubble Buddy - on UVI's Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. UVI to Host Entrepreneurial Fair Dec. 7 on St. Croix
The Virgin Islands' entrepreneurial spirit will take center stage at an Entrepreneurial Fair to be hosted by the University of the Virgin Islands on Wednesday, Dec. 7. The Fair will be run from 9 a.m. to noon in the Great Hall on UVI's Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix.
Organized by UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center and the VI Small Business Development Center (SBDC), the free event is designed to establish connections between aspiring business owners, existing business owners and agencies that offer assistance to these businesses. The Entrepreneurial Fair will provide vital tools, resources and ideas to people interested in opening their own businesses in one location. The UVI Cooperative Extension Services' 4-H/Family and Consumer Sciences Program on the St. Thomas campus will conduct free workshops on making sweet breads at from 9 a.m. to noon on Monday, Dec. 5, and Thursday, Dec. 8. Sweet Breads and Cakes Workshops set for St. Croix Dec. 7 & 8
The 4-H/Family and Consumer Sciences Program of UVI Cooperative Extension Service will conduct free workshops on making sweet breads and fruit cakes on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. Sweet breads workshops are slated for Wednesday, Dec. 7, and fruit cakes workshops will be held on Thursday, Dec. 8. Two sessions of each workshop are planned. Staff Council 'Make A Difference' Campaign Seeks Holiday Gifts for Children
The UVI Staff Council Executive Committee invites the UVI staff community to participate in a "Make a Difference" campaign to donate holiday gifts for children in the Nana-Baby Children's Home on St. Thomas and the Queen Louise Home for Children on St. Croix. Drop boxes for gifts are in the main lobbies of the Administration and Conference Center and the Paiewonsky Library on St. Thomas, and in the Melvin Evans Center breezeway (next to the Business Office) and the Library on St. Croix. Themes Sought for Afternoon on the Green 2012; Deadline Dec. 12
Planning has begun for Afternoon on the Green 2012. The annual event, held on UVI's St. Thomas campus Herman E. Moore Golf Course, is scheduled for March 11, 2012. It has grown into a one-of-a-kind outdoor family event featuring, food, entertainment and children's games.
The Afternoon on the Green Committee is seeking theme suggestions. This year's event will celebrate UVI's 50th Anniversary. Theme suggestions should be short, catchy and lend themselves to efficient marketing. UVI students, faculty, alumni and staff are invited to submit theme ideas.
The person who comes up with the winning theme will receive an Afternoon on the Green event tee shirt, an Afternoon on the Green poster suitable for framing and $10 worth of Afternoon on the Green taste tickets. VIUCEDD Plans Annual Open House for St. Croix Office on Dec. 12
The annual open house at the St. Croix office of UVI's Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD) is slated from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 12, 2011. The public is invited to visit and explore the many books, pamphlets, videos, American Sign Language resources and much more that are available for loan to the community from the lending library. All are encouraged to take the opportunity to learn about assistive technology for persons and to participate in awareness activities for mobility, prosthetics, low-vision and blindness, and hearing impairment. The open house will also feature a financial planning workshop and device demonstrations of assistive technology for the future that will also benefits those without disabilities such as the GPS-guided vehicles for blind persons.

Contributors Sought for 'We Are UVI' Web Project
As part of the University's celebration of its 50th anniversary, the UVI website will offer a special, weekly feature throughout 2012 titled "We Are UVI." In it, memories from individuals who have had a close affiliation with UVI at some point in the last 50 years will be shared. This will offer a wide range of persons a chance to actively join in celebrating this grand event in UVI's history. Remembrances included in "We Are UVI" will consist of no more than 450 words describing a significant event in the contributor's UVI experience. They will also include "then" and "now" photographs of the author. Narratives are now being assembled for "We Are UVI" and persons interested in contributing or helping in any way with this project should contact Dr. Henry H. UVI Final Exams Scheduled for Dec. 5-10
UVI's Fall Semester 2011 final exams are scheduled for Monday, Dec. 5, through Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011. The official Final Exam Schedule is available from the Registrar's section of the UVI website - www.uvi.edu - and from this direct link - Fall 2011 Final Exam Schedule.

St. Thomas Campus Academic Jam Underway Through Dec. 9
Brothers with a Cause, in conjunction with the Mathematics Department and CATS (Campus Advising and Tutorial Services), is hosting an Academic Jam on UVI's St. Thomas campus through Dec. 9. The Academic Jam is designed to help students prepare for final exams which begin Monday, Dec. 5.
Students are encouraged to participate. As part of the jam, individual and group tutoring and other assistance will be available from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Friday, in CA Building Room 118 - the CATS Suite. CATS will be closed for the holidays on Nov. 24 and 25.

Academic Jam Slated Through Dec. 10 on Albert A. Sheen Campus
UVI Students on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix will be offered Student Athletic Jam services to help prepare for final exams from 5 to 10 p.m. on Nov. 28 through Dec. 10, in the CATS (Campus Advising and Tutorial Services) Office on the 700 level of Evans Center and in the Writing Center in the Modular Building. Normal CATS tutoring assistance is available on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Online Registration for Spring and Summer Returning Students Now Available
Advisement and Online Registration for returning UVI students for the 2012 Spring Semester and Summer Sessions is now available. Online registration is mandatory for all continuing students. Online registration for the Spring Semester continues until Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012; thereafter, a late registration fee of $75 will be incurred.

SBDC Seminars on Business Startups in the Virgin Islands Set for St. Thomas, St. John
The Virgin Islands Small Business Development Center is offering a series of seminars on St. Thomas and St. John focusing on how to startup a business in the Virgin Islands. The remaining seminars will include a session on entrepreneur self-assessment, one focused on money matters and a final session on the topic "But Can Your Business Idea Make Money?"
