Financial Aid Awareness Activities Continue on St. Thomas Campus
Financial Aid Awareness Week activities on UVI's St. Thomas campus continue with an on-line financial aid workshop from 2 to 4:30 p.m. today (Thursday, Feb. 17) in Business Building Room 204 E. A Financial Aid Round-Up: "Ask the Specialist" session is set for 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, April 18, in the Dining Pavilion. Financial Aid Awareness activities were conducted last week on the St. Croix campus. UVI's Financial Aid Offices and the College Access Challenge Grant sponsored the sessions on both campuses.

St. Croix Senior Class Bake Sale Slated in Evans Center on Feb. 17
The St. Croix Senior Class of 2011 will conduct a bake sale from 4 to 7 p.m. today (Thursday, Feb. 17) on the 200 level of the Evans Center. UVI Senate Meeting Slated for Friday, Feb. 18
The UVI Senate will meet from 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 18. Access will be available from the first-floor conference room of the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus and from Evans Center Room 807 on the St. Croix campus.
Items on the agenda include UVI's Consultancy & Business Interest Policy, the Shared Governance Matrix, the Sexual Harassment Complaint Resolution Procedure and Public Access to Employee Information. An update on the University task forces and special projects are also planned.
All members of the UVI community are welcome to attend meetings of the UVI Senate. The next meeting of the UVI Senate is scheduled for Friday, March 18.
St. Croix Senior Class Meeting Slated for Feb. 18
The St. Croix Senior Class of 2011 will hold a class meeting from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., on Friday, Feb. 18, in Evans Center Room 401. The meeting will include discussion on upcoming events and fundraisers, and voting on several important issues. Another meeting will be held in mid-March. UVI French Club Plans Food Sale on Feb. 18 on St. Thomas Campus
The UVI French Club on the St. Thomas campus will hold a food sale from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 18, outside the CA Building. Virgin Islands staples plus a French dish will be available. All proceeds will go to support the club's planned trip to Paris.
'Street Beat' Performs Saturday at Reichhold Center; UVI Discounts Available
UVI faculty, staff and students are being offered discount tickets for Saturday's performance by "Street Beat," the critically acclaimed percussion and hip hop dance group, at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts. The show is slated for 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19. The discount tickets - $20 seats are $15, $13 seats are $10 - are only available from the Reichhold Ticket Office. A "Street Beat" show planned for Feb. 18, on St. Croix, has been cancelled.
The show is part of the Reichhold Center's Family Series and is presented along with the Virgin Islands Department of Education. "Street Beat" employs trash cans, paint buckets and auto parts to create its unique hip sound, while adding high energy and astonishing acrobatics.

40th Annual USVI Agriculture and Food Fair Opens Feb. 19
Opening ceremonies for the 40th Annual USVI Agriculture and Food Fair are slated for 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19. The fair, which annually draws up to 30,000 visitors, is hosted annually by UVI's Cooperative Extension Service, along with the V.I. Department of Agriculture, the V.I. Department of Tourism and the V.I. Department of Health.
The fair's agricultural and craft exhibits, entertainment and food can be found at the Rudolph Shulterbrandt Agricultural Complex in Estate Lower Love, St. Croix. UVI's exhibits and displays will be available under the big blue and white tent. A focus on interactive exhibits is planned. The gates are open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is $6 for adults, $3 for children and $4 for senior citizens.
Students, Faculty to Co-Host HBCU Mental Health Awareness Webcast on Feb. 22
The University of the Virgin Islands will co-host a webcast of the Second Annual HBCU Mental Health Awareness Day from 11 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 22. The activity - sponsored by the Morehouse University School of Medicine - is designed to raise awareness of mental health issues and reduce the stigma associated with them. The goal is to foster a more supportive and informed attitude for those who live with mental illness. Along with presentations from participating schools, the webcast will highlight promising mental health programs and present winners from the Mental Health Communication Public Service Announcement contest.
UVI students and faculty will make presentations during a webcast which will be available to the public on UVI's St. Thomas campus in the Paiewonsky Library Video Conference Room. The UVI presentation is slated for 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.
Along with UVI and Morehouse, other Historically Black Colleges and Universities participating in the webcast include Savannah State University, Texas Southern University and Tougaloo College in Tougaloo, Miss. The webcast is supported by a grant from U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

Provost Urges Support for Upcoming Nursing and Business Accreditation Visits
Provost Dr. Karl S. Wright has urged members of the University community to support the faculty, staff and students of UVI's Schools of Nursing and Business as they finalize preparations for visits by accreditation teams during the next several weeks.
UVI's Bachelor of Science in Nursing program will undergo a campus visit by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) from Feb. 22 to 24. The site visit will review the St. Thomas-based nursing program for continued national accreditation. UVI's business programs (AS, BA, MBA) will be reviewed by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs for initial national accreditation from March 7 to 9.
Student Forums Set on Drug, Alcohol and Smoking Policies on St. Croix Campus
Student forums on drug, alcohol and smoking policies will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. and 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 23, at the Cafetorium on UVI's St. Croix campus. The forums are sponsored by the Student Government Association and the Campus Executive Administrator's Office. Information will be available on current drug, alcohol and smoking policies on the campus and territory wide. Attendees will have an opportunity to address their concerns and engage in discussions with the University's representatives.

Parent Empowerment Conferences Set Feb. 25 on St. Thomas, Feb. 28 on St. Croix
A parent empowerment conference entitled "Parents and Teachers Working Together for Academic Success" will be held at the University of the Virgin Islands on Feb. 25, on the St. Thomas campus and on Feb. 28, on the St. Croix campus. The conference sessions are hosted by UVI's Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD) in collaboration with the Inter-Island Parent Coalition for Change.
Both conference sessions - which are free - will feature presentations on Universal Design for Learning, assistive technology, Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and advocacy. Lunch will be served.

UVI-CES to Co-Sponsor 40th EPA Anniversary Conference on St. Croix
The UVI Cooperative Extension Service will co-sponsor the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) 40th Anniversary Conference to be held on UVI's St. Croix campus on March 4.
The conference, which is free, will highlight the EPA's environmental and public health priorities for the Virgin Islands. The agenda includes remarks by V.I. Governor John P. deJongh, Jr., a debate on waste-to-energy efforts and discussion of recycling and air pollution control in the Virgin Islands. The conference is open to all and especially appropriate for government officials, members of the business community, scientists, environmental leaders, academics and students.

NIH Regional Meeting on Aging Research Planned for St. Thomas and St. Croix in April
The U.S. Virgin Islands will host a National Institutes of Health (NIH) regional meeting on aging research in April. The meeting is designed to provide information on existing opportunities for research and training, provide hands-on technical assistance in grant writing, solicit advice on the design of new research opportunities, and gain strategies for recruiting underrepresented students and investigators to aging research.
The National Institute on Aging (NIA) and the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) Director's Regional Meeting will be held on April 7 and 8, on UVI's St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses concurrently, via video-conference. Individuals who should attend this meeting include health science professionals and students within health science research institutions with an interest in beginning or strengthening their aging research expertise and/or portfolio.
The featured speakers will be NIA Director Dr. Richard J. Hodes, NIMHD Director Dr. John Ruffin, Dr. James S. Jackson, a professor at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, and Dr. Gloria B. Callwood, director of the Caribbean Exploratory Research Center at the University of the Virgin Islands.

UVI Concert Band Black History Month Concert Set for Feb. 20
The University of the Virgin Islands Concert Band will perform a Black History Month Concert at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 20, at Emancipation Garden on St. Thomas. UVI Professor Austin Venzen, who directs the band, has invited the participation of conductors from Virgin Island junior and senior high school bands, as well as the conductor of the V.I. Students Invited to Enter TMCF Black History Essay Contest; Deadline Feb. 21
UVI students are encouraged to participate in a Black History Month Essay Contest sponsored by the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF). The contest is open to all students attending TMCF member schools, including UVI. The subject of the essay is: The credibility and relevance of HBCUs has been increasingly under attack. What can be done to prove adversaries wrong and protect the existence of our schools?
Essays are limited to 500 words. One entry per student is allowed. The submission deadline is Feb. 21, 2011. The first-place prize is an iPad, the second-place winner will receive an iPod Touch and an iPod Nano goes to the third-place entry. UVI to Host Seminar on Lionfish in the VI and the Caribbean on Feb. 24
UVI will host a seminar on the "Lionfish in the US Virgin Islands and the Caribbean" scheduled from 1 to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 24, in Evans Center Room 401 on the St. Croix campus and available via video conference in Business Building Room 110 on the St. Thomas campus. The seminar will be presented by Joe Gulli, president of The Caribbean Oceanic Restoration and Education (CORE) Foundation. The CORE foundation has developed a Lionfish management program designed to locate and remove Lionfish from Caribbean waters while educating both residents and visitors on the threat that Lionfish pose to Caribbean fisheries and tourism.

The show is sponsored by the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. IRP Announces Schedule for National Survey of Student Engagement at UVI
UVI's Office of Institutional Research & Planning (IRP) has announced it will administer the 2011 National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) at UVI in collaboration with the Indiana University Center for Postsecondary Research from Feb. 8 through March 23, 2011.
The survey is designed to collect feedback from UVI freshman and senior students on both campuses. It will focus on the quality of student interactions with faculty and peers, how students spend their time, and what they gain educationally from classes and other activities. The results will help the University to assess the quality of its undergraduate programs and show where improvement is needed. Students selected for the survey will receive customized letters of invitation and survey packages from the Provost. Those who respond to the survey by April 28, 2011, will be entered into a gift drawing.

The University of the Virgin Islands will administer the Masters in Public Administration (MPA) Comprehensive Exam on Friday, April 8, 2011. The exam will be offered on both campuses. English Proficiency Exam Slated for April 7 at UVI
UVI's Spring semester English Proficiency Exam (EPE) for the University is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. on April 7, 2011.
On St. Thomas, the test will be administered in Rooms 223, 224 and 225 of UVI's Sports and Fitness Center. Students should be prepared to present an I.D. in order to be admitted. Students must register for the EPE in the Access and Enrollment Office located in the Administration and Conference Center building. Test candidates must report to the test site no later than 9:30 a.m. on test days with appropriate identification and form of payment. Acceptable forms of identification include a current driver's license, state or federal ID, a current passport, tribal ID card, naturalization card or certificate of citizenship. Basic Quickbooks Training Offered by UVICELL
UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center is offering a course for individuals and small businesses who are interested in learning to use the full-featured small business accounting software - QuickBooks.
Introduction to QuickBooks will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays beginning Feb. 26, at the UVICELL Center on St. Croix. Participants will learn to set up a standard list of accounts, manage accounts receivable and payable, reconcile bank accounts, track credit card transactions and much more.

UVICELL to Offer Bookkeeping Course Beginning in March
The University of the Virgin Islands - Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center will offer courses for individuals interested in acquiring basic bookkeeping skills beginning in March on St. Thomas and St. Croix.
On St. Thomas, Intro to Bookkeeping will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. every Tuesday and Wednesday starting March 1, at the UVICELL Center on the St. Thomas campus. On St. Croix, classes will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. every Wednesday and Thursday starting March 2, at the UVICELL Center in Frederiksted.
Participants will learn to perform basic bookkeeping functions such as journalizing and posting business transactions, preparing basic financial statements, reconciling bank statements, preparing payroll and much more.

The seminar is titled Effective Proposal Development Process. It will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 10, at the UVICELL Center on St. Thomas.
The two-hour seminar will provide a brief overview on developing successful grant proposals and will serve as a precursor to the upcoming Grants and Proposal Writing Skills course which will also be offered in March. Participants will receive information on the entire grant writing process from laying the groundwork to reporting requirements.

Intermediate Bookkeeping Course Offered by UVICELL
UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center will offer a course for individuals interested learning bookkeeping in order to function as an entry-level bookkeeper or manage their own books.
On St. Thomas, Intermediate Bookkeeping will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays beginning March 29. On St. Croix, the course will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays starting March 30. All sessions will be held at the UVICELL Center on St. Thomas and the UVICELL Center in Frederiksted, St. Croix.
Participants will to prepare basic financial statements, journalize and post accrual, reconcile a bank statement, prepare payroll and much more.

Workshops for Human Resources Professionals Slated for March 16
The UVI Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center and the American Management Association (AMA) will offer workshops titled Fundamentals of Human Resource Management from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 16. On St. Croix, the session will be held at the Joseph A. Simpson Building, #23A Hospital Street in Frederiksted. On St. Thomas, the workshop will be held at the UVICELL Center on the St. Thomas Campus.
The workshop is part of a series being offered by the UVICELL in conjunction with the AMA. Participants will learn the essentials of key Human Resources functions such as implementing a results-based performance management system, writing job descriptions and specifications, developing cost-effective, competitive compensation and benefits programs, recruiting, selecting, and interviewing and hiring employees in compliance with federal and state laws.
