Special Invitation to Attend MAN UP Conference Issued to Males at UVI

UVI's Brothers with A Cause are extending a special invitation to all male UVI students, as well as to male members of the faculty and staff, to register for and attend this week's MAN UP Male Empowerment Conference. UVI faculty members and supervisors are asked to extend consideration to males who wish to participate.

The conference will be held in two sessions. On the conference is slated from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. tomorrow (Tuesday, Feb. 8), at the Sports and Fitness Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus. On St. Croix, the conference will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 10, on the campus grounds. The keynote speaker for the event will be Farrah Gray. Mr. Gray was raised on the impoverished South Side of Chicago, where he defied the odds and became a self-made millionaire by the age of 14. He has since become a respected author and speaker, committed to the development of values such as leadership, integrity and scholarship.

The internationally recognized R&B singing, rapping and songwriting duo known as Rock City (brothers and St. Thomas natives Timothy and Theron Thomas) is slated to perform.

Farrah Gray Appears At St. Thomas News Conference

Free Workshop for Siblings/Care Takers of Disabled Set for Feb. 9 on St. Croix

The second of two workshops for the siblings, family members, caretakers and service providers of persons with developmental and mental health disabilities will be offered on UVI's St. Croix campus on Wednesday, Feb. 9. (A workshop was held on the St. Thomas campus on Monday, Feb. 7.) The workshops are hosted by the University of the Virgin Islands-Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD).

The session will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. On St. Croix the workshop will be held in the Great Hall, located in the North West Wing Building. It will address the specific concerns and unique needs of siblings and family members. Continuing support and future care planning will also be covered. The workshop is free and breakfast and lunch are included. Mandatory New Student Orientation Sessions Set for St. Thomas Campus

Mandatory orientation sessions for new student employees on UVI's St. Thomas campus are scheduled in the conference room in Roupp House, downstairs from the Student Employment Office, as follows:

Wednesday, Feb. 9 - 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Thursday, Feb. 10 - 11 a.m. to noon

Friday, Feb. 11 - 11 a.m. to noon

Town Hall Meeting on Climate Change and Public Health in the VI Set Feb. 11

The Virgin Islands public is invited to participate in a town hall-style meeting titled "Climate Change Impacts and Public Health in the Virgin Islands" from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 11, at the University of the Virgin Islands' St. Croix and St. Thomas campuses.

The meeting will offer a review of the available information about linkages known to exist between climate change and public health in the Virgin Islands. Participants will be asked to join in a discussion about these linkages. They will also be encouraged to offer recommendations on how researchers might create effective methods of communicating important information about adapting to climate change (extreme weather, flooding) and public health issues (fish poisoning - ciguatera - and dengue fever).

The town hall sessions will be available to the public - via video conference - in the first floor conference room in the Administration and Conference Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus and in Evans Center Room 401 on the St. Croix campus.

UVI Students Encouraged to Enter TMCF Black History Month Essay Contest

UVI students are encouraged to participate in a Black History Month Essay Contest sponsored by the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF). The contest is open to all students attending TMCF member schools, including UVI. The subject of the essay is: The credibility and relevance of HBCUs has been increasingly under attack. What can be done to prove adversaries wrong and protect the existence of our schools?

Essays are limited to 500 words. One entry per student is allowed. The submission deadline is Feb. 21, 2011. The first-place prize is an iPad, the second-place winner will receive an iPod Touch and an iPod Nano goes to the third-place entry. Winners will be notified via email and announced on TMCF's website on Feb. 28, 2011. More information and applications are available from the TMCF website: www.thurgoodmarshallfund.org. UVI Community Invited to Forum on Budget Committee Recommendations

Members of the University Community are invited to attend an open informational forum at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 9. University Budget Committee Co-Chairs Vincent J. Samuel and Dr. Solomon S. Kabuka will report on the recommendations of the University Budget Committee regarding the Fiscal Year 2011-2012 Operating Budget. The forum will be available, via videoconference, in Evans Center Room 401 on the St. Croix campus and in the first-floor conference room of the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. This forum is in keeping with the budget process as outlined by President Dr. David Hall in his communication to the University Community on Oct. 22, 2009, in which he indicated that the budget process will be "an open and transparent process that upholds the tenets of shared governance."

UVI Financial Aid Awareness Activities Will Include High School Juniors, Seniors

Financial Aid Open Houses are scheduled on Feb. 8, on the St. Croix campus and Feb. 15, on the St. Thomas campus. The open houses will serve as the kickoff of a week of financial aid awareness activities on UVI's respective campuses. The activities are being offered by UVI's Financial Aid Offices and the College Access Challenge Grant.

The Open Houses are slated from 10 a.m. to noon on both campuses. Each campus will also host Financial Aid Nights, with a session titled "How to Pay for College" for high school juniors and seniors and their parents. The St. Croix campus Financial Aid Night will run from 6 to 8 p.m. on Feb. 8, in the Great Hall of the North West Wing. On St. Thomas, Financial Aid Night is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. on Feb. 15, in the first-floor conference room of the Administration and Conference Center.

Additional activities continue through Friday, Feb. 11, on St. Croix, and through Friday, Feb. 18, on St. Thomas. Rotaract Schedules Carwash for Feb. 12 at Tutu Park Mall

The Rotaract Club on UVI's St. Thomas campus will conduct a car wash and bake sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 12, at Tutu Park Mall - in the Office Max parking lot. Car washes cost $10 for exterior and $15 for interior and exterior. For details call (340) 692-1959 or 514-0709.

IRP Announces Schedule for National Survey of Student Engagement at UVI

UVI's Office of Institutional Research & Planning (IRP) has announced it will administer the 2011 National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) at UVI in collaboration with the Indiana University Center for Postsecondary Research from Feb. 8 through March 23, 2011.

The survey is designed to collect feedback from UVI freshman and senior students on both campuses. It will focus on the quality of student interactions with faculty and peers, how students spend their time, and what they gain educationally from classes and other activities. The results will help the University to assess the quality of its undergraduate programs and show where improvement is needed. Students selected for the survey will receive customized letters of invitation and survey packages from the Provost. Those who respond to the survey by April 28, 2011, will be entered into a gift drawing.

Street Beat to Bring Their Hip Hop Dance Show to the Virgin Islands

Street Beat, a critically acclaimed percussion and hip hop dance show that plays to sold-out audiences around the country, will present shows at Island Center on St. Croix, on Feb. 18, and the UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts on St. Thomas on Feb. 19. The shows are part of the Reichhold Center's Family Series and are presented along with the Virgin Islands Department of Education. Street Beat employs trash cans, paint buckets and auto parts to create its unique hip sound, while adding high energy and astonishing acrobatics.

Health Services on St. Thomas Campus offers Stress Relief Hour

UVI's Health Services Office on the St. Thomas campus offers free, 10 minute chair massage sessions to any UVI students, faculty and staff on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The "Health Services Stress Relief Hour" massage sessions feature natural healing resonance (sound and toning) therapy. CLEP Test Schedule for Spring 2011 Announced for St. Croix Campus

College Level Examination Program (CLEP) tests will be administered on the following schedule for the Spring 2011 semester on UVI's St. Croix campus.

Students can register for the tests in the Access and Enrollment Services Office in Evans Center Room 811. Testing begins promptly at 9 a.m. on each test date. Latecomers will not be allowed to take the test. The cost associated with CLEP tests is $77 per test; make check or money order payable to CLEP. An additional administrative fee of $15 is payable to UVI prior to the test date.   A separate check and/or money order must be written for each test. Cash will not be accepted. CLEP Test Schedule for Spring 2011 Announced for St. Thomas Campus

Students are advised that the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) test dates for the Spring 2011 semester have been finalized on the St. Thomas campus. CLEP tests will be administered on Feb. 9, Feb. 25, March 8, March 24 and April 11, in the CATS computer lab (CA Building Room 123). Students can register for the test at the Office of Access and Enrollment Services' front desk, located on the first floor of the Administration and Conference Center.

Test candidates must report to the test site no later than 9:30 a.m. on test days with appropriate identification and form of payment. Acceptable forms of identification include a current driver's license, state or federal ID, a current passport, tribal ID card, naturalization card or certificate of citizenship. The cost associated with CLEP is $77 (payable to College Board) per test and an additional administrative fee of $15 (payable to UVI prior to the test date). UVICELL to Offer Bookkeeping Course Beginning in March

The University of the Virgin Islands - Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center will offer courses for individuals interested in acquiring basic bookkeeping skills beginning in March on St. Thomas and St. Croix.

On St. Thomas, Intro to Bookkeeping will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. every Tuesday and Wednesday starting March 1, at the UVICELL Center on the St. Thomas campus. On St. Croix, classes will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. every Wednesday and Thursday starting March 2, at the UVICELL Center in Frederiksted.

Participants will learn to perform basic bookkeeping functions such as journalizing and posting business transactions, preparing basic financial statements, reconciling bank statements, preparing payroll and much more.

Intermediate Bookkeeping Course Offered by UVICELL

UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center will offer a course for individuals interested learning bookkeeping in order to function as an entry-level bookkeeper or manage their own books.

  On St. Thomas, Intermediate Bookkeeping will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays beginning March 29. On St. Croix, the course will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays starting March 30. All sessions will be held at the UVICELL Center on St. Thomas and the UVICELL Center in Frederiksted, St. Croix.

Participants will to prepare basic financial statements, journalize and post accrual, reconcile a bank statement, prepare payroll and much more.

Basic Quickbooks Training Offered by UVICELL

UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center is offering a course for individuals and small businesses who are interested in learning to use the full-featured small business accounting software - QuickBooks. 

Introduction to QuickBooks will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays beginning Feb. 26, at the UVICELL Center on St. Croix. Participants will learn to set up a standard list of accounts, manage accounts receivable and payable, reconcile bank accounts, track credit card transactions and much more.
